Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

No harm for Newcastle to get a tough group. They'll be under pressure to build up coefficient points to avoid being pot 4 again next season, let alone get qualify for the next round.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,123 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Milan certainly won't be repeating last year's run with that group.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,117 ✭✭✭jacool

Group F: PSG, Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan, Newcastle

Before the draw, miserly bookies had Newcastle at 25/1 to win the CL. They'd nearly be 25/1 to come out of that group!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,123 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

They will be favourites to go through with PSG. Hopefully a lack of European experience will catch them though.

  • Site Banned Posts: 20,685 ✭✭✭✭Weepsie

Don't see them ahead of Dortmund to be honest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,117 ✭✭✭jacool

I don't either but the bookies have spoken (all odds Oddschecker)

    Group F Winners To Qualify

    PSG 5/4 2/5

Newcastle 11/4 5/6 (most backed option, Newcastle to qualify!!)

    Borussia Dortmund 11/2 13/8

    AC Milan 6/1 6/4

The referee from Young Boys vs. Leipzig must want to ply his trade in England, as he has just overturned a blatant Leipzig penalty in this tie. Utterly ridiculous decision!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,913 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

I was looking forwards to a decent CL game to watch. Turned on the telly a fecking Celtic match. 'Jayus!' I said. 'Do that many people still watch them?' Surely there were better choices? The sooner Celtic get knocked out the better.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Celtic, Man. Utd., Liverpool are the 3 biggest ctowd pullers.

There is no accounting for taste!

It's tough to watch a Brendan Rodger's team in European games 😖

I managed to find PSG v Dortmund on a slightly illegal stream instead.

Every game is available for free on livescore if you can cast

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Awful time for celtic to concede. On the earlier game Newcastle got a lesson on the quality of the champions league should have been 3 down at half time. To be fair they dug in and fought hard for the draw in the second half Trippier and Botman were particularly good.

I was very impressed with Tomori he looks the real deal so composed quick and his positional sense was superb.

It's a funny old game, Red Star lead at ht.

Better switch that one on instead so, PSG v Dortmund has been extremely cagey to say the least.

Very harsh Dortmund defender diving midair sideways to block the ball, if it was GAA they would have been raving about it.

Red Star goalie goes to punch a simple free kick in, hits thin air, Man City goal. Gift from nowhere.

Its not on TNT through NowTV sadly. Would much rather Jimbo over these games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,170 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

That's never a penalty for Feyenoord, and a second yellow card to boot. The player went down clutching his face, as soon as the penalty is given, he's back up on his feet smiling.

Harte saved it, so some kind of justice, but Celtic are still down to 10. VAR wouldn't have given that as a penalty, but they didn't overturn the decision.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,170 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Straight red card now for Celtic, down to 9.

That is what I said when I saw RTE were televising the match in the first place. Nearly always poor to watch. Europa league levels at best.

Both teams were poor. It was a mile off the top level CL games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,043 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Can't blame RTE for selecting the Celtic game. They have to pick a game which will attract the biggest audience.

Had Utd or Liverpool been playing tonight, I'd have said they would have been on in front of Celtic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,043 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

When brother messaged me to tell me the half time score, I said not a chance it'll finish like that. I said City to get 3 in the 2nd half.

    City are so predictable.

Yeah the only surprise was that it was only 3 goals they had the guts of 30 shots they are due to give someone an awful hiding soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,043 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

When they were analysing City's treble on the radio at the end of last season, I remember hearing one pundits comments and thinking, "do you know what, you're right ".

He had said that there isn't any danger with City, no jeopardy. They are just so strong. He said that Arsenal, and Liverpool before, had mounted incredible runs, yet still weren't winning titles. City were going on runs like 15 straight victories, and there no never any signs they wouldn't win games. It must be soul destroying for teams to rack up a huge number of points in the league, which would normally have you canter to a title, but still City just win q or 2 more to pip you.

The CL group for them is a waste of time. It's too easy, and makes for terrible viewing for the neutral.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,123 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Just wait till next year when they only have to finish in the top 8 (or 16) of that stupid American style Champions League.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,043 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

I haven't checked the new format, but it has the reek of a super league off it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,913 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Yeah it is a major drawback of the CL group system, if Man City were put in a straight knockout cup competition there is more chance they could lose. But the way it is Man City will probably have the group won with two games to spare and field second strings it does not do much for the competition's prestige.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,082 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

I think one of the goals of the new format is to eliminate the 'dead rubber' games in the group stage. Because you're competing against 35 other teams, not just 3, there is more chance that you can drop down the table and lose your advantage.

Some finish in Turkey as Galatasaray come from 2 down to 2 all in 3 mins, v 10 men.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 33,246 CMod ✭✭✭✭ShamoBuc

Bayern v Munich should be a good watch. I'm expecting United to try to keep it tight but the quality Bayern have could mean a very long night for them.

I'm expecting Bayern to score 3 or 4.

  • Where did Utd get that bloody kit from? You’d think it was Newcastle out there….

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 33,246 CMod ✭✭✭✭ShamoBuc

Newcastle or Juve esque kit really is not very nice, even though it's actually a green up close.

Probably should have score already though.

Plenty of energy about United, good opening 20 for them.

Bayern have been poor though, basic passes not finding their targets.

Bayern yet to get going after 20 minutes, some sloppy play by them.

United will be happy with their start.

Onana are you De Gea in disguise? What a howler. 🙈 1-0 Bayern from a nothing shot.

Another howler. Brutal goalkeeping. Somewhat against the run of play.
