And his 37th birthday is on monday. Oldest springbok debutant.

I also just really like the guy, always gives his all and a smile on his face. But I am biased, as a Stormers supporter.

    37, and he looks 67

    :D

ah i was delighted when he was given his first cap, hes worked a hell of a long time to get one

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,869 ✭✭✭Jacovs

Haha yeah, him and Kwagga are in the same category, no oil paintings.

But yes, happy for him and it shows hard work pays off...eventually. Motivation for any others who are early 30's and think they are passed their prime.

God I cannot wait for Saturday, closer it gets I think we do it.

ROG comes across very well to me in this, clearly got a great rugby mind, and I love the honesty as well.

I've been confident all week that we will win, for many reasons I've somehow convinced myself about . The closer it gets , the more I dread that a loss will leave us facing Scotland for a place in the Q.F.s. I've been more nervous about Scotland than S.A. (make sense of that, if you can).

I can't see the Boks being out of the first two in the group because they have beaten Scotland. Our world cup starts on Saturday. The 'Boks are the only country to lose a game and go on to win the W.C. I can't see us losing this game and then going on to win the W.C.

I think Ireland have to lay down a marker in this W.C.. on Saturday.

Feck it, I'll call it now ,we beat them by 12 or more, odds@5/1. If we lose we should gang up on @Jacovs and............. congratulate him!

Cian Tracey of the Indo has a different team to Thornley's. He thinks Joe McCarthy is due to start alongside James Ryan, with Beirne, POM and Doris in the backrow.

    H Keenan; M Hansen, G Ringrose, B Aki, J Lowe; J Sexton (capt), J Gibson-Park; A Porter, R Kelleher, T Furlong; J McCarthy, J Ryan; T Beirne, P O’Mahony, C Doris.

    Reps: D Sheehan/R Herring, D Kilcoyne, F Bealham, I Henderson, J van der Flier, C Murray, J Crowley, R Henshaw.

If we loose it will mean SA have physically battered us, if they do that ,then lots of injuries, which makes the Scots game very scary. What a bleak post by me ,but it's my fear.

We really need to win on Sat.

  • Subscribers Posts: 41,915 ✭✭✭✭sydthebeat

and that is the reason the draw has been extremely kind to us by giving us two relatively easy games first, and then a 2 week break after this game before the scotland game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,422 ✭✭✭✭salmocab

I was thinking about this and there might be something in bringing in a fresh VDF to counteract the SA bench. POM can empty himself for an hour.

Great story. Fair play to him. Its unfair on Fourie the position Erasmus has put him in for this game. i.e. Having to play hooker.

I think it will van Staden throwing into lineouts and again that's an unfair position to put him in.

  • Subscribers Posts: 41,915 ✭✭✭✭sydthebeat

if fourie and van staten are on the pitch at the same time, it will definitely be fourie throwing in.

Van staten is in teh VDF mould of 'in case of emergency only'.

It would be a mistake for Ireland to deviate from their tried and tested starting team.

I think its Ireland who will finish the stronger in this match. excl Snyman & Ox Nche It is Ireland with Herring, Henderson or McCarthy, Baird and Henshaw who can make the more significant contributions and impact on the game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,877 ✭✭✭ionadnapokot

I'm quietly confident because the only way I can see SA winning is if they score the first try AND Ireland get a RC.

If Ireland score first SA do not have Marx, Koch, de Jager, Am, Pollard and possibly Le Roux to call on. Big losses to the Springboks.

Since the last WC SA have lost 10 of the 12 games they have conceded the 1st try. Only beating Aus!! (& EJ 1st game) & the 3rd Lions Test (The Gatland 'strategy').

    V Aus '21 Kellaway 16’ try Lost

    V Aus '21 Ikitau 21’ Lost

    V NZ '21 Jordan 3’ Lost

    V Eng '21 Tuilagi 7’ Lost

    V Lions '21 CD 43’ Lost

    V Lions '21 Owens 18' WON

    V NZ '22 Cane 27’ Lost

    V Aus '22 McRight 2’ Lost

    V Ire '22 vdf 46’ Lost

    V Fran '22 Baile 21’ Lost

    V Aus '23 Koribete 7' WON

    V NZ '23 Smith 4’ Lost

Stop it! I've dropped a fortune on QF tickets!

Look at us, No. 1, unbeaten in some time, 6 Nations champs, we are clever, I think this goes our way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,503 ✭✭✭BoardsMember

I'm looking forward to the game. I see it as a bit of a free hit. I'm not worried about us beating Scotland, so I see it as a bit of a free hit. So we'll make the QF one way or another. I know we're told we don't want France at home in the QF, but if we get on top of France at home that becomes a disadvantage to them. We can beat France or NZ in the quarter final (or indeed lose to either), this SA game will be the toughest game of the world cup for us, hopefully we get to play it twice.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,980 ✭✭✭Lucy8080

Like you, I can't wait for this game. But , to lose after a 15 game winning streak and then have to regroup to play an enigmatic Scotland team ( who can be brilliant at times) would not be good for the old nerves.

    I think it's a free hit for S.A. and not us, i.m.o.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,503 ✭✭✭BoardsMember

I think Farrell can turn the team around if we lose, I wouldn't worry about the impact a loss might have on us for the Scotland team. SA are the strongest side in the tournament, we won't fall apart if we lose to them.

Definitely a good shout that its a free hit for SA.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,808 ✭✭✭irelandrover

If south Africa lose without a bonus point then their fate is out of their hands. It's not a free hit.

Great to see no place for Ross Byrne in 23

  • Subscribers Posts: 41,915 ✭✭✭✭sydthebeat

tough on herring, but 30 minute sof sheahan rampaging on the wings will be a delight to behold.

pretty much everything else as expected

    delighted they weren't baited into a 6-2

Mod: Enough of the anti Ross Byrne posts from you.

Happy enough with that side. Thought McCarthy might have snuck into the 19 jersey m, but have no complaints with Henderson. Delighted to see Sheehan back as well.

I was surprised people were thinking it was a 50/50 call to be honest. If nothing else Henderson's performance against Tonga made it unlikely it would have gone any other way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,164 ✭✭✭Musicrules

That selection should have plenty to spare over South Africa. No least because of the strength to spring from the bench. South Africa have power but I think we can match them on that. And then we have far more ability in a number of positions. I'm going to stick with my 6-19 point victory for Ireland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 942 ✭✭✭mun1

As strong as side as we could have hoped for. Best of luck to the squad . Hopefully we dominate the game

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,002 ✭✭✭leakyboots

Delighted for Crowley, he's earned it. Great to see Sheehan back, if a little harsh on Herring as someone above said.

Would like to see big performances from Lowe, Henderson and Henshaw especially (edit: and Killer too)

Will be some battle, can't wait!

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,093 ✭✭✭Brewster

Not a chance Hendy was being left out of 23, for a game of this magnitude once fit. I suspect there were strong discussions about actually starting him and moving Beirne to 6, but right call in end. He will be needed for a massive 25/30mins at least.

McCarthy was one of our standout players in the warm ups and continued that form against Romania. I thought the fact he was left out of the game against Tonga meant he's be included this week.

I've no issue that he hasn't been selected though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,627 ✭✭✭✭Akrasia

So, It has come to this

This is the cumulation of Andy's RWC preparations. He has pretty much the 1st choice team available to him in the first proper test of the RWC.

If we can execute the game plan we have developed for the past 3 years. we'll give ourselves every chance. If we can avoid any cards and injuries this will help a lot

I think this will come down to a score either way. Can't wait till Saturday

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,711 ✭✭✭clsmooth

Really like the 23. They will throw everything at us in the first 20-25. Bit like the game in November. They’ll try and go through us and grind us down. If we can withstand that, Ireland to win by 5 with Crowley to come on and nail the kick to win it with the game hanging in the balance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,131 ✭✭✭ironingbored

Safe to say Andy is taking it all in his stride.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,466 ✭✭✭✭phog

No surprise in that team, delighted for Crowley, fully deserved.

Just go an win it now.

Kilcoyne my biggest worry there, hasn't been fully fit and will have a big job to do.

Not overly surprised with Henderson over McCarthy.

As close to full strength as you could hope for. Ireland by 8.

  • Subscribers Posts: 41,915 ✭✭✭✭sydthebeat

once killer can hold his own at the set piece and clear rucks for 20 minutes, that really all we'll need him to do.

Agree on Kilcoyne - Very glad it's not Vincent Koch coming on against him for the last 20 minutes.

It’s a bit like Herring, I’m sure he’d love to be involved, and he was absolutely bang in form but it’s hard to argue with other two hookers being selected ahead of him. McCarthy has been great too, and certainly in form, but Henderson is just too good a player not to be involved in 23, so McCarthy too had to step aside. Isn’t it great to be talking about such strength and depth, hopefully remains the case come Sunday!

I'll go Ireland by 15, mainly because I'll be there and I'm not sure my nerves will take a close match 😬

I'd say it'll be electric, raging now I didn't pull the trigger for this one, enjoy it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,543 ✭✭✭A2LUE42

A few players unlucky to not be in the 23, but close calls and someone had to miss out. Hoping for no injuries or cards for Ireland and they have every chance of a win. Early cards or injuries, everything can change, but hopefully the 23 have what it will take to win.

I'd be delighted with a 1 point win with no Irish injuries or suspensions. Anything more is a bonus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,571 ✭✭✭ersatz

.Coming back in NZ after the first test collapse puts us in a good place were things to go off the rails on Saturday, though I think we’ll win handy enough

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,897 ✭✭✭TheRona

Yes, I suspect that if SA get a yellow after 17 mins, another after 25 mins, and a red card after 31 mins just like NZ did in the second test, Ireland will probably be in a good position to win.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 10,735 Mod ✭✭✭✭aloooof

Discipline is a skill in itself, one which Ireland seem particularly good at. I think POM’s yellow card was our first in 12 games?

When Ireland played France in the 6 Nations, they were 1 and 2 in the world rankings. They were also 1 and 2 with regards discipline in the previous 18 months. I don’t think that’s completely coincidental.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,897 ✭✭✭TheRona

Absolutely. If SA lack discipline, I'd say Ireland wins easily.

I'm backing Arendse to get a red card for taking a man out in the air.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,154 ✭✭✭✭Neil3030

I look forward to that being spun as a tactical masterclass by Rassie. Get a back sent off so your 7-1 bench has fewer issues to deal with. Genius.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,571 ✭✭✭ersatz

Who called Crowley being Sextons backup for this match 2 years ago when we were pondering what was our biggest issue then. And fair play to Murray who a lot of us had written off once Park appeared and given his slow recovery from his neck injury. Amazing how the chips fall. Ireland are in fantastic shape coming into this game, stars are aligning.

Was Vermeulen dropped to make room for van Staden and Smith? Or is he injured?

I don't know allot about van Staden (other than he's a turnover specialist and can throw into a lineout..apparently).

Looks like he's positioned out in the backline allot off lineout in attack and defense.
