Great to see no place for Ross Byrne in 23

tough on herring, but 30 minute sof sheahan rampaging on the wings will be a delight to behold.

pretty much everything else as expected

    delighted they weren't baited into a 6-2

Mod: Enough of the anti Ross Byrne posts from you.

Happy enough with that side. Thought McCarthy might have snuck into the 19 jersey m, but have no complaints with Henderson. Delighted to see Sheehan back as well.

I was surprised people were thinking it was a 50/50 call to be honest. If nothing else Henderson's performance against Tonga made it unlikely it would have gone any other way.

That selection should have plenty to spare over South Africa. No least because of the strength to spring from the bench. South Africa have power but I think we can match them on that. And then we have far more ability in a number of positions. I'm going to stick with my 6-19 point victory for Ireland.

As strong as side as we could have hoped for. Best of luck to the squad . Hopefully we dominate the game

Delighted for Crowley, he's earned it. Great to see Sheehan back, if a little harsh on Herring as someone above said.

Would like to see big performances from Lowe, Henderson and Henshaw especially (edit: and Killer too)

Will be some battle, can't wait!

Not a chance Hendy was being left out of 23, for a game of this magnitude once fit. I suspect there were strong discussions about actually starting him and moving Beirne to 6, but right call in end. He will be needed for a massive 25/30mins at least.

McCarthy was one of our standout players in the warm ups and continued that form against Romania. I thought the fact he was left out of the game against Tonga meant he's be included this week.

I've no issue that he hasn't been selected though.

So, It has come to this

This is the cumulation of Andy's RWC preparations. He has pretty much the 1st choice team available to him in the first proper test of the RWC.

If we can execute the game plan we have developed for the past 3 years. we'll give ourselves every chance. If we can avoid any cards and injuries this will help a lot

I think this will come down to a score either way. Can't wait till Saturday

Really like the 23. They will throw everything at us in the first 20-25. Bit like the game in November. They’ll try and go through us and grind us down. If we can withstand that, Ireland to win by 5 with Crowley to come on and nail the kick to win it with the game hanging in the balance.

Safe to say Andy is taking it all in his stride.

No surprise in that team, delighted for Crowley, fully deserved.

Just go an win it now.

Kilcoyne my biggest worry there, hasn't been fully fit and will have a big job to do.

Not overly surprised with Henderson over McCarthy.

As close to full strength as you could hope for. Ireland by 8.

once killer can hold his own at the set piece and clear rucks for 20 minutes, that really all we'll need him to do.

Agree on Kilcoyne - Very glad it's not Vincent Koch coming on against him for the last 20 minutes.

It’s a bit like Herring, I’m sure he’d love to be involved, and he was absolutely bang in form but it’s hard to argue with other two hookers being selected ahead of him. McCarthy has been great too, and certainly in form, but Henderson is just too good a player not to be involved in 23, so McCarthy too had to step aside. Isn’t it great to be talking about such strength and depth, hopefully remains the case come Sunday!

I'll go Ireland by 15, mainly because I'll be there and I'm not sure my nerves will take a close match 😬

I'd say it'll be electric, raging now I didn't pull the trigger for this one, enjoy it!

A few players unlucky to not be in the 23, but close calls and someone had to miss out. Hoping for no injuries or cards for Ireland and they have every chance of a win. Early cards or injuries, everything can change, but hopefully the 23 have what it will take to win.

I'd be delighted with a 1 point win with no Irish injuries or suspensions. Anything more is a bonus.

.Coming back in NZ after the first test collapse puts us in a good place were things to go off the rails on Saturday, though I think we’ll win handy enough

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,864 ✭✭✭TheRona

Yes, I suspect that if SA get a yellow after 17 mins, another after 25 mins, and a red card after 31 mins just like NZ did in the second test, Ireland will probably be in a good position to win.

Discipline is a skill in itself, one which Ireland seem particularly good at. I think POM’s yellow card was our first in 12 games?

When Ireland played France in the 6 Nations, they were 1 and 2 in the world rankings. They were also 1 and 2 with regards discipline in the previous 18 months. I don’t think that’s completely coincidental.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,864 ✭✭✭TheRona

Absolutely. If SA lack discipline, I'd say Ireland wins easily.

I'm backing Arendse to get a red card for taking a man out in the air.

I look forward to that being spun as a tactical masterclass by Rassie. Get a back sent off so your 7-1 bench has fewer issues to deal with. Genius.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,524 ✭✭✭ersatz

Who called Crowley being Sextons backup for this match 2 years ago when we were pondering what was our biggest issue then. And fair play to Murray who a lot of us had written off once Park appeared and given his slow recovery from his neck injury. Amazing how the chips fall. Ireland are in fantastic shape coming into this game, stars are aligning.

Was Vermeulen dropped to make room for van Staden and Smith? Or is he injured?

I don't know allot about van Staden (other than he's a turnover specialist and can throw into a lineout..apparently).

Looks like he's positioned out in the backline allot off lineout in attack and defense.
