I may have to start watching Casualty, 😁

I was thinking the same 😄

    Kai is the new Anton.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,582 ✭✭✭Ezeoul

I still really miss Pasha, Oti, Janette and Aljaz. But Janette and Aljaz have a new baby now, and Oti is expecting!

I'm surprised Gorka came back this year to be honest. He was really pissed off when he and Helen didn't win last year, and it showed.

I think Nadiya was passed over for Luba, this year - and Nadiya is not at all happy about it. Or maybe it was to give Lauren a celebrity partner. She stood out in the group dances last year.

And poor Amy. God, that lady is going through the mill, first Crohns, now breast cancer.

I'm conflicted over Angela Scanlon and Carlos. I loved him last year, but I cannot.stand.her. Even her TV ads annoy me. She already made one stupid stereotypical joke about how "everyone" in Ireland does Irish dancing and goes to mass. I wonder how many more we'll be subjected too.

I'm surprised Gorka came back this year to be honest. He was really pissed off when he and Helen didn't win last year, and it showed.

He would be foolish to walk away imo. It's a steady reasonably paid job, and his partner is currently on maternity leave.

Also he doesn't seem to have sidelines like eg Giovanni has his own tours and tv programmes with Anton.

Gorka just gets more gorgeous by the season!

I went back and caught up with the bits I'd missed - Angela surprised me, much better than I thought she'd be.

The one from Asian radio (Nikita?) looks like she might have two left feet.

Angela Rippon looks amazing, but stiff as a poker.

I'm still hoping Annabel Croft, once she gets over being terrified and emotional, might actually have a few dances in her. But I just can't imagine her doing a salsa or a samba.

The one who really caught my eye in the group dance was Amanda with the short dark hair (Abingdon?) - she looks like she can move!

Lovely tribute to Len - everyone looked genuinely emotional.

I really like Bobby, I think he is a sweetheart.

But Dianne complained last year or should I say used the excuse that Tyler was so much taller than her, in response to criticism from the judges. So they gave her Bobby this year 🤷‍♀️ and left a taller pro benched.

I get the feeling that getting Bobby to take it seriously and work at it might be an issue. Would love to see him doing well though.

He has a reality TV show airing at the moment (I haven't watched it, but saw the ads!) He's never really been a favourite of mine.

seriously, thinking of giving it a miss this year. feels a bit tired. Preferred back when Bruce & Len and even Darcy were involved. Trying too hard to be woke (yes I hate that word to). Shirley still annoys me. Craig getting more plastic every every.

Yes a good brisk walk instead each evening might be a better option.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 7,454 Mod ✭✭✭✭HildaOgdenx

Same here. I never really took to him. Not sure why.

I heard something about that programme alright but it's not a longterm source of income, presumably.

Try not to see it as "woke" but as "inclusive".

    As it should be.

I missed it last night and it didn't record because I forgot to leave the sky box on standby.

Is it repeated anywhere? It used to be repeated on Sunday afternoon, but I can't seem to find it, if it is this year.

I really enjoyed that first show. Nigel was brilliant, and I'm so glad Katya has a good partner. She is the most exciting pro in terms of choreography and getting the most out of their partner. Annabel was really good, and seems lovely. Ellie also great which I didn't expect from the group dance.

They weren't all perfect, but personally I loved Angela Rippon, Krishnan, Bobby, Eddie and Amanda. I think Krishnan has potential to surprise us. I don't want to hear anymore about the Amanda and Giovanni' "feud" either. She's quite good, and he always comes up with great dances, so just get on with it without the drama!

Les is borderline as to whether he'll be an Ed Balls (improving gradually from a low base and entertaining) or a John Sergeant (consistently awful, just a joke). But I want him to do OK, so fingers crossed.

Layton has too much dance training to be included. I feel the same as when Ashley Roberts was on it. I do like his confidence, but I almost felt like there was an arrogance there that he thought he's better than Nikita!

I agree with you about Ashley Roberts. I wasn't aware Layton had dance training (tbh, I don't know anything about him) but Nigel has had dance training too...

It really is an unfair advantage, even if they play it down.

(eta) Okay, I looked him up. Layton is a West End performer and has played the title role in Billy Elliot for gods sake. I agree with those who say he shouldn't really be there.

I don't mind some dance training - I think it's inevitable with a lot of celebrities who have attended stage schools, or been involved with drama and theatre on the way up in some form.

But Layton has starred as Billy Elliot in the West End, and starred in Rent. He has studied dance since he was a child. And it's not like it's something he used to do but has been away from it for years - it's what he does for a living - he's a well trained West End stage star specialising in shows with a dance focus.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 7,166 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hannibal_Smith

Normally I don't like when some one has previous dance training/experience but Layton and Nikita look soooooooo good together and Nigel and Katya have Nigel in the coupling so I've decided to be shallow on the matter this year.

All the pros always say how ballroom is so different to anything else, and I'm willing to go with that this year to support my shallowness 🫣😀

Sorry, I know you said you didn't want to talk about it, but are there rumours of Giovanni and Amanda not getting on?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,300 ✭✭✭Hippodrome Song Owl

Yes, the tabloids were full of rumours of a rift on Friday and Saturday according to their headlines anyway - claiming she was threatening to quit as she felt he was too tough in training. It's hard to know of course as they will print anything, and there's already quite a bit of vitriol towards her from certain quarters so perhaps just trying to stir things for their audience.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 7,166 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hannibal_Smith

Hopefully it's not true. I'd say he's tough and pushes hard, but I think it works in bringing out the full potential of his partner. Rose was able to handle him well 😀

I think there's bound to be tensions for all of them, at some point, in the training rooms. It's all so intense and full on.

But the papers make stories out of nothing. A pro or celebrity just walking along the street looking serious will have them with headlines saying such and such looked downcast and so on.

They have something today about Motsi and Craig and ghosts or something. 🤣

Les Dennis was first out, unsurprisingly. Although I did think being a well known person might keep him in a bit longer.

Left very graciously, I would say he was glad to go, but he was delighted with having been on the show.

    Angela Salon was superb !!

    I mean Angela Scalon

    Superb

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,582 ✭✭✭Ezeoul

Not finding any of the couples too compelling this year so far. Layton just annoys me as he shouldn't be there at all.

That jive by Nikita was one of the flattest I've ever seen, where were the flicks and kicks? For once I agree with Craig.

The over-enthusiastic forced delight by the pros when given low scores by the Judges seems extra fake this year too. :(

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,300 ✭✭✭Hippodrome Song Owl

I'm really enjoying this year. I like all the celebs this year for once. I loved the Disney pro dance tonight.

This week I thought Angela Scanlon was just brilliant and so entertaining. I also think Amanda is a fabulous dancer. Bobby is very good and so likeable. I loved Krishnan's performance tonight - such great fun. Ellie and Vito are a great partnership.

Layton was a disappointment tonight. I don't think he should be on the show at all as his dance training and current professional experience is just too much - but watching him and Nikita do that Quickstep last week was nearly worth it. This week not so much.

Nigel also disappointing this week - very boring choreography from Katya, which is unusual.

I have to say that Lauren is really standing out as the most talented pro dancer this year. She's mesmerising.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,582 ✭✭✭Ezeoul

I agree about Lauren, she really is mesmerising - she stood out from the crowd for me in the group dances last year, and I was hoping she'd get a partner this year.

I also think Carlos is incredible, and Nikita K is standing out this year and showing us what he can do - I just wish it had been with a different partner.

I have no favourites yet, but I suppose it is a bit early in the competition. There are always some who peak too soon.

And it is way too bloody early for tens from Shirley!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,300 ✭✭✭Hippodrome Song Owl

I'm only noticing Lauren this year, but she definitely stands out in group dances. I also love Carlos - so talented.

I'm about to give up on It Takes Two I think. I like Fleur, but find her to be a dull presenter. Janette's OK, but it will never be the same without Zoe. I haven't enjoyed Joanne Clifton's segments either - she's there to do choreography insights, but she can barely walk in her platform shoes let alone show the intricacies of dance steps - it just ruins it. Bring back Ian Waite!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,582 ✭✭✭Ezeoul

I've never watched It Takes Two. And I definitely won't watch it now if Fleur is on it, I cant stand her!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,582 ✭✭✭Ezeoul

So, Zara and Graziano, and Nikita and Gorka in the dance-off. Zara saved by the Judges. I'm not surprised.

At least Gorka goes out on a high note after that tribute to Barbie - He was an amazing Ken!

    Amanda was superb this week

Found the performances a bit dull tonight, no real standout dances at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,127 ✭✭✭lmahoney79

I was astounded watching Angela Rippon's dance last night....what an incredible woman!! Also Layton and Nikita's dance was brilliant.

Poor Jody, I think he needs to go now, just not a dancer at all. He just seems embarrassed to be there.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,300 ✭✭✭Hippodrome Song Owl

Personally I thought Layton's Cha Cha was a standout! He shouldn't be in it, but I can certainly appreciate when he gives a great performance. They seem to have developed a really strong partnership too, and it's nice to see the far they have come in that regard from week 1.

Nigel's salsa was really enjoyable and good to see him back on track. Angela Rippon is phenomenal. An inspiration.

I enjoyed seeing the progress of the weaker dancers - Krishnan was great - he's my favourite now - a proper beginner starting to make progress. And Adam's waltz was lovely. Annabel's jive was a good improvement too.

I thought Bobby was really hampered by the terrible song choice. The height difference with Dianne is really sticking out too in hold.

Jody should be the one to go. I agree with the comment above that he seems embarrassed to be there. You can get away with being a poor dancer, and of course his struggles due to his leg, but you have to be able to throw yourself into it fully by week 4!

I thought it was good to see some meaningful criticism from the judges this week too.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 7,454 Mod ✭✭✭✭HildaOgdenx

Amanda (and Gio) will not be participating tonight. Due to medical reasons.

  • Registered Users Posts: 232 ✭✭Navy blue

Scoring seemed all over the place tonight. High scores despite quite a few mistakes. No way Zara and Graziano deserved that score, she hardly did any dancing and the dancing she did was slow and stilted. Thought Layton and Nikita were fantastic, but no other dances really stood out. Angela is some woman to be almost 79 😱

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 7,454 Mod ✭✭✭✭HildaOgdenx

She is heading for 80 now 😁. She was 79 on October 12th.

Eddie and Karen versus Zara and Graz in dance off. Eddie and Karen eliminated. Unanimous decision.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 87,866 ✭✭✭✭JP Liz V1

    Amanda not returning at all

I hope it isn't serious medically

It's seems herself and also Layton were are getting a lot of stick on social media

I hope we see Angela R do a fast dance

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,300 ✭✭✭Hippodrome Song Owl

I'm very sorry to hear Amanda's not returning. She's a good dancer, and her and Giovanni were a really interesting partnership. It's a real shame to see Gio gone at this early stage.

Amanda has been the subject of a very nasty online campaign, so that may be part of it. Also, the rumours of friction between her and Gio - although they seemed to be managing that really well if that was really the case.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 7,454 Mod ✭✭✭✭HildaOgdenx

I imagine the whole Strictly experience is stressful, more than anyone could imagine.

I hope that she is okay. That is the main thing.

Nothing is more important than one's health, imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,582 ✭✭✭Ezeoul

No way Eddie should have been eliminated over Zara. Her dance was very laboured (imo).

What happened to the dance off being judged on its own merits?

At least Eddie was having fun, and he was definiately much better of the two.

Not a great year, at all. No standouts really, and Layton being there (a professional dancer, and dance teacher!) is still a big issue for me - and for a lot of strictly fans, apparently.

Sorry to see Gio go, but not a fan of Amanda.

Amanda was definitely one of the best this year. Hope she's ok. Nothing on her instagram but lots of support on her last post.

I've only just managed to catch up on last week's show, never mind this week's, so way behind but I couldn't avoid seeing spoilers for this week.

It was only a matter of time until Eddie left, he was never going to make it to the end really. It's amazing how some celebs hold on to their pro partners like they're a life-ring and do much better in hold - and yet he and some others just freeze in hold and absolutely blossom when dancing on their own!

I agree that Layton is making an absolute mockery of the show. I wonder how the other strong (but waaaaay weaker than Layton) celebs feel about trying to compete against that level of training? There have been ones with dance/stage training on before, but this is taking it to a whole new (ridiculous) level. The only criticism of him so far was a couple of weeks ago when they told him to rein it in and stop trying to outdance Nikita - ffs!!

I just couldn't warm to Amanda at all. I can't figure out why, because she was very good and clearly in it to win it. She's a loss to the series, even if she wasn't my cup of tea.

From last week's show, there were a couple of dances that were set to just frankly bonkers music - Amanda's foxtrot for one, that was such a mismatch between music and dance it made my head hurt.

There were another couple of examples that I can't remember now.... but mainly because all I can remember is Annabel's legs! My god, she looked amazing last week! She's much better than I was expecting - I thought she'd be all gangly and awkward given her height and that's kind of how she is when she's talking - but she's really giving it a go!

Angela Scanlon is another surprise, she's clearly very fit and giving it a great go - she's a good bet to go all the way unless she meets some dance that's her undoing along the way.

I'm not a fan of Angela Rippon, nor her style of dancing-while-gurning-and-leaning-forward - but my god I'm in awe of her!

  • Registered Users Posts: 232 ✭✭Navy blue

Very interesting that Amanda thanked everyone bar the janitor in an Instagram post but didn’t mention Giovanni! That’s really bad form when he posted a lovely message about her. Gio is a brilliant dancer and a great teacher but I would say he is a hard task master and doesn’t take any excuses. I get the vibe off her that she didn’t like being told what to do and didn’t take criticism well. The celebs need to understand that this show is the professionals bread and butter and if they don’t get to a certain stage in the show, they don’t get to do the live shows and lose out on income.

That said, some of the abuse she got for her supposed anti trans views was vile and disgusting. From what I’ve seen reported, she didn’t say anything particularly bad but she got absolutely vilified. No one should have to put up with that level of abuse for merely stating an opinion.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 6,685 Mod ✭✭✭✭pinkypinky

She is getting slammed on that post for not mentioning Giovanni. Even if they did fall out, just make some empty thanks, otherwise it adds fuel to the fire.

I really like Layton. It's doubtful he'll win, but I imagine he'll get to the final. I can't see the judges picking anyone over him in a dance off. So that poses a real possibility of losing decent others earlier. But i do love watching himself and Nikita. Yes, i know its about the contestant and not the pro, but its nice to see what the pro can come up with and to watch them dance without holding back.

I read during the week that Angela Scanlon is a trained Irish dancer and went on tour dancing with a troop or something? And also Nigel has previous experience too?

I am enjoying this series though, there's not a contestant that I hope leaves or anyone I'm sick of.

I do wonder was Amanda leaving down to a fued and if so, will that have an impact on Gio coming back next year.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 7,454 Mod ✭✭✭✭HildaOgdenx

Same here. I'm really enjoying seeing Layton in action and the fact that Nikita can throw the kitchen sink at him and they are both thoroughly enjoying themselves in the process.

Angela S danced to quite a high level in Irish dancing alright, I believe. I felt sorry for her the last night tbh, even though she can be a small bit irritating at times 😁. She and Carlos getting the same score as Zara and Graz didn't seem right to me. I - of course - am no expert whatsoever! They did have a fabulous dance the previous week and topped the leaderboard.

I'm really enjoying the series. To me, there's no nailed on winner at this point. Krishnan for the pure joy he brings to the floor - I love it. I also like Nigel and Ellie a lot. There's nobody I dislike or want to see leaving really. Angela R, I wish I had half of her flexibility now, never mind when facing eighty!

A bit of glitz and sparkle on a Saturday night, bring it on. 💃🕺
