Hi, managed to get on the panel, does anyone know if you turn down a position based on location, are you off the panel immediately or will they try offer you a position closer to your location?

  • Registered Users Posts: 124 ✭✭daffodill50

For a different ICT competition I was able to decline offer from location I received and be retained on the panel should a position arise in my preferred location.

When did you interview for this? I haven't heard back yet

Think it was second week of July

Hi, I just got an email saying I'm under consideration for HEO ICT Software Developer An Garda Síochána.

Does anyone know where this would be located?

EDIT sorry I see there is a HEO thread, I'll leave it here unless the mods want to move it.

Could you share the link to HEO thread, please? Are you doing garda vetting already?

Does anyone know how long the extra security clearance is taking at the moment? Mines on week 12+ and haven’t heard anything.

Anyone else get there OOM from July interview? Just wondering does anyone know how many positions there are and if everyone will get called?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4 Aerooo

Just got placed on the panel for software developer comp ID: 23309007 , never been in civil service before so just wondering how long I’ll be waiting or does anyone know how many each dept are hiring? I’m in 30-40 in the job panel, sound!

  • Registered Users Posts: 8 codingbish

Based on earlier posts in this thread it seems like if you get a number that you will be called eventually. Could be waiting quite a while if you have a very high number, you can go back through the thread to see how long it took people to get called.

Does anyone have any idea how long pre-employment checks/ clearance takes? I submitted all mine my docs late July and received confirmation they'd be in contact prior to contacting my current employer - Garda vetting came through early August but haven't heard anything. Sent a follow up email last week, but nearly 6 weeks at this stage has me worried! Thanks

  • Registered Users Posts: 1 pascal11

Can range anywhere from 2-8+ weeks. Depends on the department really. Where were you on OOM?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6 Roger1998

Thanks - I was in Top 5 OOM, I was notified of consideration late in July after placing on the panel early June. I suppose it's just a waiting game but wanted to check if the wait time was normal

I placed 92 on the OOM for the most recent competition (interviewed in early August) so not sure if I have much hope 😅 but we'll wait and see

In the normal course of events, Garda vetting takes around two weeks if you've lived only in Ireland. If you've lived abroad or aren't from Ireland originally, it can take longer. And sometimes vetting slows down when they have backlogs, people on leave, etc. Depending on where you're being assigned to, there can be more in-depth vetting that needs to be done (e.g., An Garda Síochána, Defence, Justice, etc.)

Public Jobs/PAS and the civil service generally all slow down over the summer months. It's when the Dáil isn't sitting, so it's when civil servants, including the ones working in HR sections, tend to take their leave.

If you've been placed on a panel, you will almost certainly be offered a position; the civil service has loads of vacancies for ICT staff.

I'm in the exact same situation Roger1998. References submitted over 3 weeks ago. I'd say loads of the HR people are on holidays. I was getting a bit worried too. Hopefully we'll know soon. Best of luck.

I'm going to throw my hat into the ring here too. I have been waiting eagerly to hear about a position, had a great interview and got placed in the OOM in the mid-twenties. According to a buddy of mine in the Civil Service, that is pretty much a grauantee of a job in the mid-term. I've continued applying for other jobs in the mean time but would prefer to take this role. Should I be getting nervous that I have no heard anything by now?

I got an OOM similar to yours, and I know people who are placed in 4th and 9th, but haven't received any updates from civil service yet. I think they will call in batches as there are several departments in need of soft dev EO's. I'm expecting to hear something from them next month.

If you check on the info booklet, there are at least 8 departments, and considering that they will call 3 to 4 EO's per dep, I hope we can expect from 20 to 30 people being called in the first batch.

This gives me alot of hope my friend. Perhaps I shall see you in there in a month or two! Ironically, this was my first interview in a long, long time at the very start of my new job search. If this is the one that actually results in a job.... well I think I better get a Lotto ticket.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7 FLima

Yeah, that's a nice opportunity tbh. I'm pretty happy with it. I changed career to soft dev recently, so I was looking for graduate programmes, and this role in the public service suits me really well! I hope to see you in there as well!

Got top 10 in OOM and I haven't heard anything back yet either (interview was early August). I just got job offer in private sector after a couple months unemployment (but I would prefer civil service job). I guess I'll accept private sector job and I bet the day I start I'll get job offer from Civil Service and will have to hand in notice. I wish Civil Service could give some sort of timeline but I guess they cant.

You can phone PublicJobs/PAS and ask where the panels are at, i.e., what number they've reached. But if you've placed on the panel top 50, you'll almost certainly be called; remember there are nearly 20 government departments with ICT units, and literally hundreds of public bodies that can draw off this panel.

I received word last week that we were getting someone assigned from the operations panel, once they've completed vetting, so things are moving after the July/August hiatus.

Crossing my fingers and toes! Alot of hope in this series of messages.

Well that's good to know. I was thinking that mid-20s seemed like a pretty safe bet but as the months have gone on... Thanks for that detail!

I have just changed career too FLima! This role is a fantastic place to start out in a new field. If I ever do get the call, I'll be in touch to see who you are in RL. 😁

  • Registered Users Posts: 110 ✭✭jozywales

So I emailed PAS asking where the panel is at / what number they've reached.

They replied with "We are in the process of confirming allocations for this position and will be reaching out to the first batch of candidates in the next couple of weeks. If/when we reach your place on the panel, then we will be in touch about the clearance process."

  • Registered Users Posts: 5 Chesse_on_Toast

Dear lord! So nearly there, thanks for the update.

Anyone any advice on the below?

I got the below email today:

"I am pleased to inform you that you are under consideration for the position of Software Developer ICT

Specialist (EO), Central Statistics Office - Cork. Your consideration for this post is subject to the Public

Appointments Service being satisfied that you meet the essential requirements for this campaign and is not to

be treated as an offer of appointment."

Does anyone know if once I submit my forms & vetting and assuming they are all clear am I fairly certain to get offered the job? Is there any further interviews required?

I have a dilemma in that I was offered a job in the private sector today (after several months unemployment). I will need to give them an answer in the next couple of days. I would prefer the civil service job but if there is chance I may not be offered it then I don't want to regret declining the private sector job offer. Also, I don't want to start the private sector job and resign after a couple of weeks to take the civil service job.

Definitely no further interviews, you are at job offer stage now. They may look for a reference from your current employer as the final step.

Congrats, CSO are doing some very interesting stuff, and will be doing more and more online in the future.

  • Registered Users Posts: 110 ✭✭jozywales

Cool, thanks for that ...it is what I was hoping to hear.

The clearance stage will take around 8-10 weeks, but you are certain to be offered the job once you have no issues with Garda vetting or references. It depends on your circumstances but if I was you I would take the private sector job while you are waiting 2 months or more to get the formal offer from the Civil Service.
