They said at one time that if you can see the van you're generally in range.

Ok, just going by what was reported. What do you know the range to be?

Depends where the van is parked.

the closer the van is beside your lane the the closer you need to be to the van for it to catch your speed.

for example if you are on the the usual back roads here, 2 lane contra flow with no hard shoulder and the van is in some gap at the side of the road ( like one or 2 metres inside ) on your side with the rear facing you , then you need to be within a few metres of the van for it to catch your speed.

now if the van was on the other side of the road in a lay-by with the rear facing you then it will catch you further away.

so basically the further the van is away from you to you side, then the further away it can pick you up.

the radar comes off the van at a 22 degree angle ( I think) so you can get an idea.
