IMO splitting RTÉ up into the group outlined should help the media landscape (though I believe it to be a bit late).

I am not suggesting selling off 2RN (RTÉ Networks), I think a national studio is an important infrastructure as the network, that why I would propose that 2RN would be then national public service Radio Broadcaster (save for Lyric and RnaG), national broadcasting network and the national studio of Ireland in Montrose (up to them if they continue to stay their or refocus in another area of the country).

I rather see 2FM go in a different direction under 2RN than either reduce it to a local broadcaster or close it for the sake of "Well everyone else is doing a better job of it".

I think it may become to granular if we start selling or closing operations down. I think intially you have to look at the broader picture, and that broader picture is : -

RTÉ is in disarray and inaction will just continue the kind of service that we are all largely unhappy with. Inaction mean keeping the service as is, the mananagement of RTÉ should not be allowed close down serviced due to their own mismanagement of the national broadcaster. I can seem the coming for those Digital Radio Stations very soon, where is the sense in that? and why should they make that decision?

Seems a sensible approach. Unfortunately, the RTE management is anything but. And the mininster doesn't seem quite up the to job. The 2RN brand as a public service broadcaster would go a long way towards solving some of the problems.

Response to RoTelly (Quote not working)

Just on them coming for the Digital services. I fully agree with you, I believe they will - purely for demonstration purposes. IMO they will save very little money in doing so. If that is the case, will they make everyone who is associated with them redundant? Or will they be redeployed to some other part of RTE radio in which they will actually become less productive?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,593 ✭✭✭political analyst

    Not that again!

Moving all live sports coverage to RTÉ One would mean that Six-One would be knocked out of its slot in the event of extra time in a match. Furthermore, there are sporting events to which RTÉ has the rights and which are on at the same time.

Do not be too worried by Strategy 2024, it was dead in the water in 2019. They already were showing they didn't have a handle on things by that point, just before it they'd hope for millions from the sale of Art work.

3 parts of the strategy couldn't even be completed without government approval, the move of the NSO, the Closure of AERTEL and the closure of their digital Radio stations.

They are lucky that the legislators acted on 2 of those (NSO and AERTEL), while they are stuck with the Digital Radio Stations, I have no doubt they Minister will now be convince to allow RTÉ close them down. @alzer100 The one thing we have is the Broadcasting Act 2009, so they'd have to ask the Minister and Department to close those stations.

But all most all the rest of it was wishy-washy shite - The 1st point on their list of things to do is to move Big sporting events to RTÉ ONE, they only thing keeping RTÉ2 alive. Even considering the Scheduling problems for RTÉ ONE can you imagine RTÉ2 RWC coverage with only the non-Irish matches few are watching Toga V Portugal, or how smaller events would fair without the support of the bigger events, and then what do you consider a big event, Irish games the Women's World Cup doesn't end up on RTÉ ONE ... how very sexist of RTÉ!

And Strategy 2024 is where they stated that the Executives would take a 10%, so I believe it to dead.

Surely RTE can't expect a bailout without it coming with certain expectations?

They can't just have the debt wiped clean, and carry on as normal until it needs another bailout in another year or two. They have to start living within their means, and make hard decisions.

IIRC Forbes announced the closure of the digital stations and the DAB network back in October/November 2019 effectively putting them into wind down mode but didn't seem to realise that she needed permission from the minister to actually close them. I think Backhurst will do his homework on this and I wouldn't be surprised at all if he has or is already seeking that permission. If and when an announcement is made, again I wouldn't be at all surprised if there is an abrupt cessation of RTE's online digital services.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,564 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

The ignorance of the Irish media is allowing RTE to get away with a tissue of lies in relation to closing Aertel.

Every single story about it on all media has a picture of the 70s-tech (well, RTE only got around to it in the 80s) World Standard Teletext which for some bizarre reason still exists on Sky. Saying that's obsolete and can no longer be supported etc. is plausible, it's also very slow and limited.

BUT RTE also want to close the modern teletext they introduced with Saorview, they are not providing any justification for this, making all information disposition dependent on the internet is a mistake.

It's an indication of how resistant to change RTE are. The Angelus is almost ironic at this stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,462 ✭✭✭✭kneemos

It's The Angelus in fairness, it's inherently religious. If they removed the bells maybe and just had folk stopping what they're doing to stare at the sky.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,800 ✭✭✭ShamNNspace

Or maybe just have them staring at their phones informing them of which way to think... Would suit the times we're in

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,303 ✭✭✭RoTelly

The Angelus is a great distraction why would RTÉ get rid of the Angelus when it cause so many to argue for and against, it completely deflects from the mismanagement of RTÉ.

I have no issue with it either way.

@kneemos RE: number of Digital Radio stations, I assume a wider sense of choice. But again I'd argue that RTÉ can well afford many thing why not spend it digital radio.

RTÉ called for the closure of these stations in their 2024 strategy, and didn't do due diligence on their legal requirements.

This is the same strategy that temporarily cut executive salaries by 10%, I rather see the executives let go of the car allowances and take a 20% cut in salary to funded the RTÉ Digital Radio stations.

RTÉ had massively cut back on Continuity in the last few years, I don't think they have any before 1pm. They don't seem to be able for pre-recorded intros.

RTÉ's preformance at the PAC and the views of come commentators really just point back to Dee Forbes retoric, even YLE got a mention!

Noticed this last night for Storyland. I wonder if it is just Thursday Night. This was on RTÉ2, for what RTÉ consider to be a Major part of their Drama output.

Not been able to keep up with this from afar.

Where is it up to re investigation into wrong doings ?

When is the next meeting ?

Is your one still sick ?

Will anyone every be held accountable or has the long game worked on the Irish public again ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,364 ✭✭✭RabbleRouser2k

The Storyland thing reeks of of RTE fulfilling a 'quota', as in they're required to make home produced drama content, and this fulfills the brief.

They won't ever be made into anything beyond the 'one off'. They market it as major drama output, but the major programming is on RTE one. Even the RTE player gets more attention than RTE 2. They even repeat shows on RTE2 that started on the player.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,462 ✭✭✭✭kneemos

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,364 ✭✭✭RabbleRouser2k

They're making shows that are meant to be exclusive to the player. But after a few months, they put them on RTE 2. In an attempt to make money back on them, I imagine.

Darren and Joe's Free Gaff was one such show that was player exclusive, and then they put it on RTE 2 after a few months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,462 ✭✭✭✭kneemos

Bizzare. The other way round surely. Not like there's no room between the repeats for new shows on RTE1 or2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,364 ✭✭✭RabbleRouser2k

The money they get paid is probably a pittance, and to furthermore pay less, they tell them it's 'content'.

It really all started with Storyland. RTÉ at that point had largely let go of Monday Night new comedy-drama's on RTÉ2 (The last one being the 1st series of RAW, before being moved over to RTÉ ONE, and becoming a sister show to The Clinic, and then taking over that light Sunday Night drama).

Storyland was voted on by the viewers as the weeks went on one of the programmes would be drop from the line up, with the first or second winners being Hardy Bucky's (They'd already had a large online YouTube following).

It never really "showcased" anything. And was mostly likely perceived way for RTÉ to produce drama on the cheap. Since the arrive of Fis Éireann the new drama's have aired on TV, and consist of 8 scripts developed for the series with 3 going into production.

RTÉ since 2006 have been in constant pilot mode with nothing ever sticking. Remember the Format Farm ... and about 3 years ago a set of comedies that were supposed to result in one be coming a series, eventually it they ended up on RTÉ ONE rather then on 2.

I think this is the original announcement for that:-

Dee Frobes said "Encouraging and developing creatives across the sector is at the core of why RTÉ exists and this initiative will also give Irish talent a platform" ... however we now know herself and Moya were

I don't really know another way to explain all of this: -

    • RTÉ spent €18m on Drama, this includes RTÉ's commission unit spent €2.5m on Drama in 2022.
    • Meaning that Fair City has a budget of about €15.5m (Though I realize Drama on Radio gets about €500k)
    • RTÉ also "imported" €4.4m from Irish producers (this also includes other genres), so I am not sure how much of it goes towards drama, but lets give them the benefit as say 100% goes towards drama.
    • That's under €7m on Drama (when we exclude Fair City). Or as RTÉ would say just 2% of their total budget for 2022.

I don't really know why TG4 or VMTV could not do what RTÉ are doing in terms of Drama output based on these figures. VMTV is spending at least €20m on imports and TG4 is spending about €3m. I know much of TG4's imports are children's TV and people may feel that TG4 would be stepping into English Language production but TG4 have always aired English Language programming.

RTÉ basically have moved their RTÉ2/Network2 shows online, and basically this has lead to even tighter budgets but also let to an awful lot of slush that no one is watching.

RTÉ Radio has also massively cut back on Continuity in recent years, a few years ago, they used to have live continuity announcers on every evening saying, "This is RTE Radio 1 on 88 to 90 FM, 252 khz & 1190 Meters longwave, online and on the astra sat" .... ...but now you only get them on weekends and they don't mention frequencies etc anymore.

RTÉ has spent nearly €75,000 appealing findings against the broadcaster around bogus self-employment cases, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has been told.

In fresh documentation sent to the committee, RTÉ revealed it has spent €74,034, exclusive of VAT, appealing bogus self-employment findings made by the Department of Social Protection. Bogus self-employment is where a company classifies a worker as self-employed although they have the characteristics of an employee.

The original intention was to examine the treatment of 340 individuals, but that number increased to 500. To date, about 144 investigations have been completed. There have been 118 decisions and arising from this 32 appeals are active.

This is just the appeals. With back taxes and PRSI this bogus contractor bullshit is going to end up costing RTE us a fortune.

It emerged earlier this week that RTÉ has already spent nearly €500,000 on a series of external reviews commissioned in the aftermath of the controversy around misstated payments to Mr Tubridy.

A quote from that article in the Independent:

An expert report, which the minister sat on for the past year, says trust in and perceptions of RTÉ were dropping even before the payments scandal.

“For example, the portion of people agreeing that RTÉ is “relevant to people in Ireland today” has fallen 11 percentage points since 2019,” the report for the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland says.

I followed a link at the bottom of the article, one on the current situation in Palestine. I'll quote from that as well:

Meanwhile, Israel continues to mount airstrikes across Gaza in which Hamas health officials claim over 5,000 Palestinians have been killed.

As I've been following the news on that conflict, I am aware that the current claim regarding Palestinian deaths is over 9,000. While it is not factually incorrect to say "over 5,000", it is at best misleading - so I wonder if our "trust in and perceptions of" D'Indo should be questioned too?

Looking at the business post account of the recent RTS meeting, it seems RTE have their eyes on the "Finnish model" to continue the lifestyle they have become accustomed to. What is that? https://yle.fi/aihe/about-yle/finances

Basically, get Revenue to collect the dosh from private taxpayers and businesses.

The Finnish Parliament decides on the Act on Yle Tax, which determines the amount of the Yle tax and who pays it. Yle does not decide on the tax or its amount.

The Yle tax is mandatory for persons over 18 years of age as well as for organisations engaged in business operations, vocational practice or agriculture in Finland.

For private individuals, Yle tax amounts to 2.5 per cent of the total earned income and capital income, which exceeds EUR 14,000. The maximum tax per person is EUR 163 per year. Those who earn less than EUR 14,000 are completely exempt from paying the tax.

The Yle tax rate for organisations is based on their taxable income. The Yle tax is not collected from organisations with a taxable income of less than EUR 50,000. If the taxable income for the tax year is at least EUR 50,000, the Yle tax to be paid is EUR 140 + 0.35 per cent for the portion exceeding the income limit, so that the maximum annual tax rate is EUR 3,000. source

Net Zero means we are paying for the destruction of our economy and society in pursuit of an unachievable and pointless policy.
