Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Never mind the smart comments.

I wanted to put in an update as I received a small bit of info. Vanilla have narrowed down the problem enough to escalate it through the lists as a major issue taking priority over others. We are hoping for a resolution very soon.

Thank you all for your patience on this over the past number of hours.

    Mike.

It’s like accessing it through a Tor network, only the latter more often eventually gets there.

I am just curious. Are software changes tested before they are released live? At the very least, it does not seen like there is rigorous testing going on. Surely the developers don't just amend the live system with their fingers crossed.

Getting them while scrolling, now. I know they're working on it, I guess we'll have to put up with them another while.

My turn....could make a drinking game out of this but I'd be plastered by 9pm

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,961 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

Getting them all day and normally I seem to miss out! Yay inclusion!

This is what happens when you cede control of your platform to a third party and don't have a strong enough contract to enforce change control or even accountability or SLAs.

I get bad gateway error more when I come back to this thread than any other.

    Yup, same...

Seems to have replaced the "Bad Gateway" errors from yesterday but just as frequent - every 5/6 clicks. Oh and it jumps back to the top of the page after a refresh every time too.

I may be misremembering but I remember Mike or niamh confirming before that they don't have a test site.

I had a DELL Dimension T550 with a massive (literally) 21" CRT. Weighed a tonne! Great machine though

Had a 21" monitor as well. A thing of beauty at the time.

I was thinking that if Vanilla or whoever in Canada could test any changes made before the end user is affected on Boards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,538 ✭✭✭✭ohnonotgmail

That would be the norm but it also costs extra money. Something boards.ie really doesn't have

    I keep getting this

An error occurred while attempting to connect to the database. dsn: host=10.212.1.71;dbname=vf_boards_L7U2F;host=10.212.1.71;dbname=vf_boards_L7U2F;charset=utf8mb4, error: host=10.212.1.71;dbname=vf_boards_L7U2F;host=10.212.1.71;dbname=vf_boards_L7U2F;charset=utf8mb4SQLSTATE[HY000] [1045] Access denied for user 'boards_L7U2F'@'10.212.3.163' (using password: YES)

when I post, though it doesn't seem to make a lot of difference to posting. Keep getting Gateway errors, also the frowny face with 'you can't go here' type messages - it has taken me ages to find this thread because of the above, in the end I found it by searching and following someone else's link.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54,659 ✭✭✭✭Headshot

I keep getting "Something went wrong" message and feel that is so apt as this whole mess started when going to Vanilla

Errors and bad gateways with every second click now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,084 ✭✭✭✭Tom Mann Centuria

I'm getting "something went wrong messages" in mobile format and also desktop format on my phone, so the variety spices it all up a bit.

Edit: AND bad gateway errors with variety of cities. I've had Manchester, Dublin and London so far.

    Boards is really spoiling us.

In fairness, they are working on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,961 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

Guys, it'll be fixed whenever Vanilla get around to it/figure it out.

There's no change management, account management, or SLA that I can see. There's nothing Mike can do but log/chase tickets.

You get what you pay for springs to mind, and this is the result. 2 years later it's still a mess unfortunately.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,783 ✭✭✭Mr. Guappa

I've had two posts fail to appear after I've hit submit 🙄

Edit: one appeared about 30 mins after I initially posted it. The other was in this thread, so keen to see if that shows up at some stage. Shambles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,178 ✭✭✭con747

I don't know why they can't just undo whatever they did to feck it up and have a rethink.

The site is now hosted and "maintained" by Vanilla. This option was chosen because it was (supposedly) too expensive and difficult to maintain the original site (although how this is "better" is a mystery).

Boards have apparently no control over any changes that are made (and which break things), the resolution of problems (beyond logging a ticket like every other customer), and other site issues may/may not be resolved depending on Vanilla's own roadmap and costs of doing so.

There's no going back though. They've been very clear on that. This is what we're stuck with until the site is either sold on or shut down I'm afraid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,178 ✭✭✭con747

I know that, but I mean the latest "update" they implemented, has just made it nearly impossible to tolerate the error's that happen every second or third click. Can they not just roll that update back and at least leave a site that kind of functions.

Don't expect anything from life, just be grateful to be alive.

    Exactly .

Am glad I am not the only one , have been having problems all week .

Then see this thread and even the regular posters have had problems...this is the first post I have managed to submit ! ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,961 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

Depends on a variety of things..

    - Have they identified the cause of these issues. If it was the result of a patch/update, do they know which one?

    - How widespread is the impact? Is it affecting just Boards or multiple customers/sites? Remember that a lot of customisation has been implemented to make an unsuitable platform work even vaguely like the previous site. No surprise then that this sort of thing happens regularly whenever an update/change is made.

    - How easy is it to roll back the change if indeed that was the cause? You'd presume that some sort of back out plan and testing was put in place, but who knows.

    - Is it a Vanilla issue at all? Could it be cloudflare related or some other dependency that's causing it?

    - Working hours. There doesn't seem to be any support over weekends or after core hours (US timezones I'm guessing but could be wrong). As such it's unlikely that any sort of update will feedback to Mike until lunchtime-ish tomorrow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,291 ✭✭✭✭Gatling

There has to be something better than this, don't know about vanilla or similar but this is turning into a shitshow and then we're left waiting to someone in America or Canada to pull their finger out and fix some of this , it's getting beyond frustrating.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,178 ✭✭✭con747

With the amount of constant updates that go wrong I don't think it's Mike should be explaining whats wrong at this stage it should be Odhran. Nero and Rome come to mind.

    A quote from Odhran

"- Boards. Our platform. We need to update it asap. Not just to commercialise… but the plasters over years of tech have plasters, and it will fail without intervention. What that means right now, I am not sure, but it does mean change. Not bad change…. But a 20+ year-old forum with its fair share of band-aids and a high level of traffic every day, means we need to fix that fast, before the system risks cracking… and then crumbling apart."

The database appears to be corrupt now, threads showing new posts when there are none, and people complaining about disappearing posts.

When is the money (including lost growth) Michael Noonan took in the Pension Levy going to be paid back?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,572 ✭✭✭✭Leg End Reject

That's it in a nutshell. Odhran also promised to be an active member and to post regular updates.

Mike is just an employee, part-time too I believe. He has said he's not a programmer and wouldn't have administrative access to the Vanilla platform to make changes even if he was, yet he is left to face the shıtshow of the new platform and the frustration of all the users here.

Even the mods, cmods and admins get blamed on occasion too.

Petition to change Boards.ie logo to:

As if to make this funnier, there was an error first time I tried to post this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,961 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

Agree completely. It was the same with Niamh previously. Expected to stand over a decision they didn't make and have limited ability to influence when things do go wrong.

The buck stops with Odhran, wherever he is, but it's clear that Vanilla was chosen as it was cheap and that was the driving factor so this is the result.
