The budget

    Might be more of a political question I am not sure.

    Does the emphasis on the budget, such as media leaks, discussions on lightweight current affairs programs, and mad phone-ins programs where the minister is quizzed by what are often cranks trivialise politics in Ireland?

    The print media has been full of...give us more money articles and there always is the run-up to the budget.

    Should we get rid of the one-off budget and do it differently?

    are you advocating for the government to do the budget behind closed doors without any media coverage?

    the budget is of huge public interest (and rightly so) so of course it’s heavily covered in media.

    The unnecessary parts of that are just par for the course.

    No of course not behind closed doors, but having a multi annual system would lead to less of viewing the government as some sort of fat chife providing for the clan.

    There’s 2 things at play here.

    Annual budgets are kinda necessary because situations change all the time and they need to be able to adapt to them. There are plenty of long term strategies/projects that have the funding allocated to it for the next several years so everything isn’t year by year, but some changes couldn’t wait for a multi annual budget

    The second is that politicians absolutely love it. Far from feeling like they can’t get anything done because of it, they revel it. For good and bad
