Taxing a new car

Hi guys,

Please settle a discussion between our family....

We're looking at buying a brand new Hyundai Tucson from a dealer but won't pick it up until next March/April.

So my question: is the tax due from the 1st of January for the year & we just have to loose out on those couple of months? Or is the tax done from the month we actually buy the car?

Technically no. It's from when the car is registered in your name.

The garage will register the car and you will pay the motor tax back dated to the first of the month you collect it.

I've paid for and collected cars in early Feb which were registered in late Jan as snow etc delayed me picking them up. I had motor tax from Jan.

Let's not be pedantic. It's from when it's registered to you.

Bought a car this summer. It was registered to me in June. I didn't have to buy tax till August 😁

You or garage can also declare a new car off the road immediately in the case of it being registered towards the end of a month for example and not being picked up for a day or 2.

Motor tax is due from the first day of the month you register it. So if you register on 31st January, you owe from 1st January.

I get that the tax is due from the 1st day of the month you register it....

We're going to the dealership next wk to place an order & hand over the €1000 deposit for a brand new Tucson, but dealer has already told us these cars aren't going to be available until March/April so we don't have any choice in when we collect it.

family members think that the dealer will register the car in our name as soon as the order is placed, therefore it's tax will be due from January regardless of the fact that it's out of our control that we can't collect it until 2/3 months later....

I don't agree, I think that if the cars are only arriving here in March/April they will be registered for tax in March/April... Please correct me if I'm wrong

It's not. You shouldn't have had to pay for January. Dealer should have submitted Part B of an RF150. And there's a non-use section in Part E of the RF100.

Just a reminder that they’re spending close to €50,000 on this car so I wouldn’t worry about a couple of euro in tax.

Yes, you're correct. For obvious reasons it's impossible to register a vehicle that doesn't actually exist yet. And you can't tax a car that isn't registered.

I assume the family member involved doesn't own a car already because this is all basic enough stuff.

If there's a chassis number before the end of March and the car isn't due to arrive to the dealer until Mid April, they will try to register it before the end of Q1 to hit / exceed target.

If that's the case, ask the dealer to send you the RF100 when it's registered. It takes around 20 seconds to declare it off the road so you don't end up paying tax for the whole of March. Not a big amount, but you're going to be paying enough tax eventually - better in your pocket than the government.

https://www.motarviews.ie/ORD/login - Reg an PIN are needed. On a brand new car, PIN is the last 6 digits of the chassis number, which you'll get from the RF100. Has to be declared off the road for at least 3 months, but once you get the car, log in to motortax again and override the off road declaration by taxing it from the start of whichever month it is.

That’s not how I read that post. Maybe it’s your deposition.

I read it as “I’m spending €50k on the car, I’m not gonna worry about €20 tax that I may not have to pay”.

Nothing jealous there IMO.

It doesn't matter how long it takes to deliver a car, it's taxed when it lands and is handed over to you. I paid tax at my dealer when collecting the car after a 6 month wait. Plenty of people waiting 12 months for a car last year.

It needs a number plate before it can be motor taxed. If it gets a number plate before you bought it you are not the first owner and should seek compensation if it's a "new" car you bought.

If the car has a chassis number and a birth cert, it can be registered - wherever it is in the world. Dealers or importers/manufacturers may want to register the car for targets, before it arrives in to the country. It can be registered to the person buying it, and not delivered for 2-3 weeks - that doesn't mean it's no longer a "new car" - still has delivery mileage on the clock and the person buying it will still be the first driver (excluding people who've moved it around the place).

It's unusual for cars to be registered before they are in the country, but it does happen. The preference is for the vehicle to arrive to the dealership before it's registered, just incase it's not what was ordered - not straightforward to de-register a vehicle. Being registered in the month before collection is most likely if collecting at the start of a month, and especially at the start of a quarter.

Ford dealer did exactly this on a car my parents bought and declared it off the road until pickup.

I was alittle suspicious but it was legit.
