Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

It’s Michael Cahill still a producer on 2fm and that’s his main day job?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,772 ✭✭✭GSF

Ronans 71 today. And he’s celebrating it’s presumably by not being in a studio

How much so does it cost RTÉ to run Gold?

    How many Staffers?

    How many on contract?

From what I am reading it is a viable low cost station..,I hope it is not affected by the expected cut backs?

Probably costs 400K a year ..imagine the commercial potential??

I would imagine it's on Kevin Backhurst hit list. I have mentioned this before but to close this service for demonstration purposes would be stupid. Yes, change is required in RTE but they need to implement significant cost savings. Closing digital particularly RTE Gold would hardly put a dent in things. He has hinted that there will be voluntary redundancies, a reduction in programming and no digital investment so that kind of spells it out for me.

I think there will be an announcement in the next few weeks...

Interesting mix in this weekend's Live Vault episode ... I especially liked the closing track - Sweet Little Mystery by John Martyn.

    Yes yes great show..

Actually John Connolly’ is a good listen, as is Living in the 70’s

Great Radio and songs we seldom hear elsewhere

I could listen to Gold schedule all weekend, and sometimes almost do - but ABC to XTC and Live Vault would be ones I'd make a point to listen back to if I missed the live airing.

Correct on Ronan, as per this from RSVP when he moved to Gold:

Also, I’m not a staff member in RTÉ. I wasn’t looking forward to the gold watch and a big pension. I had my private arrangements. I wasn’t a wealthy man, but that didn’t matter. It was never about working for the money. It was about having something to do, and wanting to do it. Anyway those seeds were there for a few years but I really started to think about it at the beginning of 2022.

Rick off this afternoon - no presenter is filling in for him

  • Registered Users Posts: 819 ✭✭✭alzer100

Wasn't listening to the end of Rick O'Shea's slot yesterday so I don't know if he mentioned being off today. I assume his absence was not planned, they don't seem to be able to get coverage of that slot at short notice.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,621 ✭✭✭channelsurfer2

it was budget day. He said before that he is not on during budget day as RTE need to use the "resources"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,242 ✭✭✭Glaceon

    The studio presumably.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,617 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

There are loads of other studios in the radio centre they could use.

Anyway the playout computer for automated shows would be housed in the Gold studio I imagine ?

The attached file contains a photo of the studio that is dedicated to RTE Gold.

Just shows how old fashioned Rte is. Couldn’t they do a pre record? Anyway why is the budget such a big deal anyway. Most of it was leaked days in advance

  • Registered Users Posts: 819 ✭✭✭alzer100

Well Rick O'Shea is not on today either. He is still on the schedule but it could be down to anything. Hopefully everything is ok with him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 863 ✭✭✭amlinopta

Listened back to the end of Monday's show on the radio player and Rick said he would be on at the same time on Tuesday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,772 ✭✭✭GSF

Maybe he has the lurgy and not budgetitis after all

He's on sick leave, according to his social media.

  • Registered Users Posts: 819 ✭✭✭alzer100

So I wonder will Ronan still be handing over to Rick O'Shea when doing his last link at 10 mins to 1 o'clock?😄

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,033 ✭✭✭Brian CivilEng

"... I can see him outside setting up"

  • Registered Users Posts: 819 ✭✭✭alzer100

I thought RTE Gold would have handled the absence of one of their "live" presenters a little bit better. No announcement at all and no temporary fill in presenter, morale must be pretty bad in RTE.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,772 ✭✭✭GSF

Ronan obviously struggling with a bad throat but keeping going regardless. I’ve noticed it both today and yesterday. Maybe he’s recording a weeks worth of shows in one day?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,772 ✭✭✭GSF

Although he says at the last link that he will be back tomorrow with a clearer voice

  • Registered Users Posts: 819 ✭✭✭alzer100

Oh no, don't tell me... Vocal correction software?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,772 ✭✭✭GSF

Rte software can’t even play the right days tape sometimes - I don’t think they can fix Ronan’s sore throat

  • Registered Users Posts: 819 ✭✭✭alzer100

Doing all of those pre-recorded links is just too much for Ronan's chords.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,772 ✭✭✭GSF

Anyone else would have called in sick. Maybe he’s only paid by the show 😉

Will we ever know what the likes of Ronan Dave Fanning and Rick O Shea earn per hour for their shows?

    €200 a show??

  • Registered Users Posts: 819 ✭✭✭alzer100

It probably all depends if you are self employed. But with RTE, even when your self employed... you may not be self employed.🙄

Ronan not sounding great again today - get well soon Ronan !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,772 ✭✭✭GSF

gold doing a tv themed top 100 - music from tv shows, theme tunes and key moments in various series. Will they do an edit to reflect Matthew Perry’s passing when it comes to the Friends theme?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,091 ✭✭✭ShaneOC

Big fan of the Top 100's from RTÉ Gold but they missed a trick with the TV Themed one today (well so far anyway). Way too many songs that were used in TV shows and not TV themes themselves which would be really cool but would not last a full day. I know there are still 30 songs to go but I will be surprised if they change the mix of songs they've had since 11.

Not saying that the songs today are not good, but they could have split this Top 100 into 3, one for TV Themes, 1 for TV ads and 1 for songs from TV shows (but not the theme).

I think "I'll Be There for You" would be in there anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,772 ✭✭✭GSF

Nifty edit from Will just before the theme from Friends.

Seems like the Live Vault finished its run on Gold on Sundays at 6pm.

Dave Fanning takes over the slot starting with a Fab 50 from 1981.

Will there be 30 years of Fanning top 50s - one per week?

Great to hear that Dave is on board At RTÉ Gold..

What about Mark Cagney another ex 2 FM ledge to join the team..

why is the 70’s show only an hour on Gold ..it just flies..and always has a few surprises

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,772 ✭✭✭GSF

Mark cagney isn’t Rte staff. As Rte seem to have a lot of underemployed staff Im sure they will turn up Gold first

  • Registered Users Posts: 819 ✭✭✭alzer100

I miss the likes of Mike Maloney. He was with RTE Gold before Forbes' announcement in 2019 to close the station. I think he just shows up annually on Christmas FM now. I think he presented "Living in the 70s" and drivetime Fridays 4-7pm iirc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 676 ✭✭✭TheBMG

Isn’t Cagney also the station VO for Newstalk? As such it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s restricted from providing services to other outlets.

The Indo are reporting that RTE's new plan to be published next Monday includes "Closing services", I can't see RTE Gold/2xm/Pulse/1extra/Chill surviving this time. With Longwave and DAB gone, there ain't any low hanging fruit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,772 ✭✭✭GSF

So they just celebrated 6 years of live programming on Monday and probably won’t make 7?

2XM would be a huge loss.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,033 ✭✭✭Brian CivilEng

What is the point of closing them? They are run on a pittance and provide services not catered for by any commercial service. Surely the very definition of public service broadcasting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 952 ✭✭✭waywill1966

No advertising revenue and a small listenership will probably be the reasons cited in the event of a possible closure!

  • Registered Users Posts: 3 5hunderball

If the 3 or 4 RTE staffers behind RTE gold take redundancy, it would make sense to close it. The other interesting thing about RTE's digital radio portfolio is that after over 15 years on air, only Gold has had any interest from the general public and Gold is the most mainstream of them all

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,617 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

if RTE Gold was just a music service with no presenters, it would cost RTE virtually nothing.
