    On the anniversary of her murder 52 years ago, Gardaí launched a cold case review into the murders of Una Lynskey and Martin Kerrigan.

    I’m inclined to agree with Mick Clifford that the chances of discovering the truth about her murder are vanishingly small. More likely the review will expose incompetence or worse in the original investigation. Like poor Raonaid Murray, a young woman is murdered on a laneway leading to her home but the culprit appears to have escaped (although the Lynskey family think otherwise ).

    Her body was found in the Dublin mountains but (wouldn’t you know it!) the State Pathologist couldn’t determine the cause of death.

    The murder of the man who confessed to Gardai (under duress?) adds to the horror of the situation.

    Mick Clifford has published a book on the case. After detailed analysis of the evidence, as I would expect from Mick Clifford, he is driven to the conclusion that

    Gardaí may eventually be able to identify a prime suspect. But acquiring enough solid facts to the point that naming such a person could be justified remains a long shot. The chances of ever identifying who killed Ms Lynskey remains remote.

    Some points that I didn't know:

    Una Lynskey was in love with local man, Paddy Kelly, but her mother was against the match and the day before she disappeared, Una confided in her cousin Ann on the bus to Dublin: “It’s all off. Paddy’s breaking it off because he isn’t wanted in my home.” But that night, "Paddy and Una were back together. She had been unwell and he took her to a doctor in Dublin."

    Recently, a woman contacted Mick Clifford to say that, shortly after the murder, an aunt of hers claimed that her brother-in-law was responsible. He had a record of violence and robbery. On October 30, 1971, just of a fortnight after the murder, he was remanded in custody on robbery and assault charges. He was subsequently sentenced to five years in prison for the offences. This man used to travel to race meetings with an older friend in a Ford Zephyr or Zodiac car. Fairyhouse is very close to the crime scene but nothing specific links this man to the murder.

    Please edit the thread title to at least give the woman her proper name, Lynskey.

    As for the question of who was responsible for her death it's extremely unlikely a definitive answer will emerge from this thread.
