Cow in trouble this morning

Have a young cow standing by the wall away from the herd. Her calf baulling around the place looking for her. She looks weak and isn't in great condition. Vets are all out on call this morning too what ever is up so shes not going to be seen till the afternoon. I gave her a bucket of nuts which she started picking at, I wonder would it be some form of tetney, I thought she should have staggers if it was but she is just weak and very slow to move, she seems to be doing a bit of forcing too.

I'd say Grass tetany first and then possibly red water. Can you get her to pass water?

Youtube - Karen moynihan's cow had a recent case of red water, surprising for October, maybe the recent warm spell has active ticks .

I hope they can sort your cow. Last night was pretty cold and grass is watery.

My first thought was red water when I saw her forcing, but I thought it's way too late in the year. I gave her magnesium and calcium solution under the skin in case it was Tetany but I also gave her a shot of Imizole just now. It isn't everyday a limousine cow will stand in the field for you to inject her. My gut feeling is red water. Vet due after 3

Had you taken precautions against the tetany ? . Could be the early stages of it . Staggers would come later .

Vet just come and gone now. Confirmed red water, I already had her treated so she just examined the cow. I got her calf into the Shed so at least he won't be pulling off her now. Busy morning alright for the vet between calving and cows going down, the frost last night set off underlying conditions.

If you know of anyone with the cure of the bleed be sure to give them a ring. Worked for me last year with a heifer that had red water.

Very important. Epsom salts can be a little severe but works fast if needed.

Molasses and liquid paraffin easier on the animal but slower response.

Stale beer (slops from a local pub) & black treacle is another remedy I've given a cow following a blood transfusion.

Had the Vet call back in the evening, I thought the cow was alright as she had stopped forcing and was lying down. Vet reckoned she had weakened and it was 50:50. She gave her a transfusion. Cow still alive this morning, still lying down won't make an effort to get up but is alert. I gave her about 2L of a Molasses/Warm water mix using a dosing hook, I didn't want to force any more into her as she didn't want it to begin.

Hopefully she pulls through, I hate loosing them

The gums are pale and yellow with anaemia. Did the cow get an antibiotic as well -

I went back on our 2016 records here for the transfusion, along with oxytetracycline 20%, dexatad 100ml, imazol 100 ml. These are from the receipts, not necessarily the amounts administered.

She's standing now but fair shook, no appetite to eat but I think she'll make it. I put a coat we had for the pony on her I think its going to be cold again tonight. Fair play to the young Vet for calling back, great to see the enthusiasm even if I couldn't rightly understand her Dublin accent!!

Idk rightly what she was given at least 3 different shots, but I know she got an injection to strengthen the heart

Try her with calf starter crunch if she won't take nuts or hay/silage. Always find they'll pick away at the crunch.

Ya. Another Ivy believer. I had a cow down last spring for 9 days and she got plenty of ivy.

It could be a week before the red water cow will be right. Maybe cut a bit of grass if she's inside. She will eventually get there.
