They likely get to the final. And have a very good chance from there..

Where is this idea that Sexton had a poor game coming from? He was fine last night.

He had two mistakes that I recall, one was a fairly straightforward missed penalty and the other was a chip late on in the game that was the wrong decision (both of these probably due to the pressure of the game - it happens). I can think of several other high profile mistakes by other players that cost us as well. Other than that he was solid. Tired toward the end, but plenty of players were out on their feet toward the end. The other kicks were fine both down the line and at goal. Directed Ireland around the pitch well - it wasn't his fault the lineout misfired or that we gave away scrum penalties.

Neither of our backup 10s were going to break the game open during those final minutes - where we did really well to get all that distance up the pitch between forwards and backs. Couldn't get over the line, but it is what it is. There's no world where an un-injured Sexton should be getting hooked there.

Wondering that myself? Maybe it's been dealt with on previous pages? As it was, it seems as if Referee Barnes decided that scrums shouldn't be contested and that the Irish scrum should just hold their position. Did we get a single put in the entire game??

Nothing from Argentina so far suggests they will win

Never seen that before. Blocked down conversion

wouh, 4 tries between France and South Africa, only 20 mns...top game

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,495 ✭✭✭✭bucketybuck

Both France and South Africa going hell for **** leather here. No scared players there, no nerves in the first 20 minutes, instead they all believe that they belong and just get stuck in. Imagine that.

now 6 tries, amazing....how much at the end ?

france get south africa, we get new zealand, them the breaks I guess but both winners will sail into the final v england or argentina who

are in a semi but it's impossible to see further progress

hardest part about yesterday is just knowing we'd probably beat Argentina to give us our biggest sporting day in irish history

Its the 2nd WC in a row where our potential QF opponents were either the bookies favourite or 2nd favourite going into the tournament. You'd be unlucky if that happened once but to happen twice is crazy.

As its been said this game and tomorrow are in reality the true SF's of the RWC as Argentina/England wont be able to live with either France/SA or NZL.

It's sometimes hard to remember how many great days we had with that team but even that would be hard to top a rwc final possibly

I'll never forget that pen shootout v romania, or the schillaci goal in the quarter though as a mayo man

we have many exciting moments without delivering sadly and it's easy to forget the good ol soccer days given

    how bad we are now

I hope the 'bottlers' brigade throughout this thread today are watching tonights immense battle and are seeing how such high intense pressure by two brilliant teams leads to mistakes and many sloppy moments. Not bottling, just high level sport played as best as is possible in the circumstances.

Looks like South Africa choose to peak for this match not group games

    Maybe lessons can be learnt

Ramos gone to 10 and already into some clown territory.

That 6-2 split could ruin France.

Its mental. France comfortably beat nz. Ireland beat South Africa. South Africa dump out France... nz beat Ireland. The margins are tiny, when teams are that close in ability...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,182 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

We've seen the same with Leinster, La Rochelle and Toulouse at club level.

Ireland beat South Africa when it really didn’t matter with both teams almost definitely getting through.

The circumstances behind France beating NZ helped them win. Opening match of the World Cup, hosting the tournament, massive moment for the country.

Both teams in both matches were getting through from their groups no matter what..

  • Registered Users Posts: 188 ✭✭trevezel

well, tiny margins but at last, the South is always the winner....whats the matter ?

Saw this on Reddit and it just shows how close the top 4 are. Tiny margins in the two big quarter finals.

    France beat NZ by 14.

South Africa beat France by 1.

Ireland beat South Africa by 5.

    NZ beat Ireland by 4.

All teams beat each other. All teams lost once.

    NZ and South Africa advance.

Ireland and France eliminated despite better points difference.

    Welcome to knock out rugby.

Wins when they aren't knockout ones just aren't as impressive at all. Nobody cares that we beat SA now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,056 ✭✭✭jones

Oh yeah of course they don't but it highlights the tiny margins between these 4 teams. Both QF games could have easily gone the other way for Ireland and France.

In the perfect world these 4 would have been semi finalists but that's not how sport works.

Does anyone know if they are holding an official reception for the team on their arrival home...they deserve something to show what they means to the fans...

Also think we also have showed we are the best fan base in the world. Incredible last night again....

Best time to try and beat the all blacks is in the first game of the tournament. Before they hit their stride kinda deal.
