Hmmmm...there's a lot of folk that are perfectly willing to let him go to jail too. 😄

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,363 ✭✭✭✭looksee

He probably thinks that if he says he would be happy to go to jail, citing virtuous reasons, the courts will not put him in jail just to spite him, because that is what he would do.

  • Registered Users Posts: 33,607 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Funnily enough, Trump going to jail probably would help save US democracy. It would show that Trump's attempts failed, he was rightfully punished for them, nobody is exempt from the law, you can't publicly attack courts/judges with impunity, you can't treat classified documents like a trophy cabinet, and ultimately there is a system in place to punish those who try to actively overthrow the democratic will of the people.

Let's also add the caveat here that "jail" for Donald Trump will not look like the jail we're all conjuring in our heads.

Trump might be many things, but he's still Rich in America, and rich people in America do not go to the same jail a random black guy caught smoking weed will be thrown into. Trump will/would get put into what amounted to a spa hotel with ankle bracelets.

If you or I committed any of the various financial or federal crimes we'd be sharing a cell with some bristling recidivist; Trump being rich and political will get a much easier ride.

The challenge in the UK is that the burden of proof will be on Steele so if he cannot show that he knew for certain that these things were true Trump could win.

Right from the very start , Steele always described that dossier as "raw intelligence" which is largely unfiltered , unvetted information.

Under UK Libel laws that could stand against him - Which is why Trump is suing him in the UK and not back in Florida.

Exactly. Trump won't be seeing any orange jumpsuits, although they would go lovely with his complexion. But house arrest and a complete marginalisation from US politics will do just nicely, and would serve as a warning to any other wannabe tin pot dictators in the future.

But, yeah, there are many tiers to American "society" and when your in the moneyed bracket the same rules don't apply to you as they would to someone else of lesser means.

Is he going for even more fake tan? Cause that tone is about on par with the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

The work on the border wall, we didn't like the messenger, so we killed the message. Turned out it was right.”

"Issuing long-term debt to refinance when rates were at zero. We didn't like the messenger, so we killed the message.”

"Peace in the Middle East. We didn't like the messenger, so we killed the message. When are we gonna stop shooting ourselves in the foot?”

Most Americans are beginning to feel the same way. The court room hit job's just aren't having the effect corrupted democrats hoped they would.

    Welcome to the real world

Trump didn't bring peace to the middle east and it's a bit deluded to say he did... I'm also not particularly pushed about what any billionaire says as they have their own interests that don't affect most people.

Question for you that doesn't tend to answered by posters. Trump was found liable for rape, do you think he's a rapist? Ignoring all the other court cases which have credible grounds, what exactly does it tell us about a person who will happily vote a rapist in? That's only the tip of the iceberg in terms of what Biden can run in an attack campaign against him. Also will come up in every debate. Btw, if you don't think he's a rapist, care to explain?

If anyone buys into the idea that Donald Trump - well, Jared Kushner to be exact - was the man to usher peace between Israel and Palestine where many, many people have failed to do so, they're either naive or an idiot. We can pick one, but anyone who thinks "Peace in the MIddle East" has an easy answer is selling you a bridge.

A religious, social and political hairtrigger that's almost as old as civilisation itself; one that has shaped the world's history - and one without any discernible path to peace that wouldn't cause immediate aggressive repercussions from Israel, Hamas or any of the neighbouring countries who'd like to wipe Israel off the map. There's no chance it was was ever going to be fixed by a man who couldn't even get a simple Healthcare reform bill through an administration he controlled all branches of. Or who has had no actual background or experience handling delicate diplomatic situations.

Wise up. Support Trump if you want to, but don't indulge in fantasy geopolitics that thinks what's going on in Israel would have otherwise had a happy ending. That situation doesn't have a happy ending.

So , no comments of your own about this issue , just copy/paste from the tweet?

What "messages" are we talking about here?

    The Border wall ?

Still a terrible idea with no practical benefit , Biden administration is being forced to build a small section of wall because the GOP led House won't allow them not to.

    Debt re-financing??

    What??

"Peace in the middle East" ?

    What Peace would that be?

    Moving the embassy to Jerusalem?

Signing "peace" deals between countries not at war?

Negotiating a peace deal without one side being present at the negotiations?

Rambling nonsense from a guy who said "No one cares what's happening to the Uighurs"

In January 2022, Palihapitiya said on the podcast All-In with Chamath, Jason, Sacks & Friedberg to co-host Jason Calacanis that the ongoing Uyghur genocide and internment of at least one million Uyghurs in concentration camps in Xinjiang, China does not concern him:

Nobody cares about what's happening to the Uyghurs, okay. You bring it up because you care and I think it's nice that you care. The rest of us don't care. I'm just telling you a very hard, ugly truth. Of all the things that I care about, yes, it is below my line.

So , yeah , gonna take a large pinch of salt with whatever that guy says.

What can be noted is that tech investors and indeed most business people don't make good political leaders or decisions. Politics is a totally different craft.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,529 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

I'd also say there's entirely different motivations at play as it's all about maximizing personal wealth, opposing support for unionization of any kind etc.

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,359 ✭✭✭✭Water John

Above all the mindset and decision making process are totally incompatible. Even if Trump was a successful businessman he would still make a poor political leader.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,326 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

It's an unshakable fallacy that éxisted before and will outlast Donald Trump: this weird persistent idea that the Successful Businessman would automatically make for a great political leader; pick a country and you'll find a plethora of examples where business leaders went into politics and it turned either into abject failure - or a worrying diversion into pseudo-autocracy. Doesn't matter if profit making is entirely antithetical to the communal demand and not-for-profit requirements of fair governance, no: man do business good, would do government good. It helps if he'll "stop the waste" (typical translation: punish the poor)

Just look at our own country: Peter Casey took a crack at the Presidency, while you'll trip over the number of times Michael O'Leary has been marked as some Greatest Taoiseach in waiting. Of course in the case of Casey, not unlike Musk it was quickly revealed that what people did latch onto was a resting prejudice against another group (in this case, Travellers), while his obvious ineptitude for government was quickly revealed, thankfully, when he didn't even appear to now wht the Office of the President here actually did.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,529 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

Also the way the US is setup can unfortunately enable people who aren't even great business people to succeed. Somebody like Trump if he had been based in Europe wouldn't have survived wealth wise beyond the 80s imho. Also obviously, none of them are generally suited to politics.

I do love it when Trump supporters come on with an example of something that may, if looked at through a particular context and without taking multiple other factors into account, be deemed as not the worst idea ever.

Illegal immigration for example. I agree that as a concept something should be done. But simply building a wall, or in the case of UK stopping the boats, is ineffective and nothing more than a tagline. It doesn't seek to actually deal with the issue, as the issue itself is more valuable as a political tool.

But let us run with the view that the wall was in fact a great idea. So who do we blame for not getting it done? Trump was POTUS, he also had the majority in the Senate and the House and was able to get a big majority on the SCOTUS. Then the failure ultimately lies with Trump. So even that argument that it was the right idea (it was never workable) shows Trump up to be really poor at being POTUS.

Issuing long-term debt. The problem there is that Trump promised that he would eliminate the debt. Being such a brilliant businessman, he would sort all the finances out. But he couldn't do it, it fact did the exact opposite, he massively increased the debt by unfunded tax cuts to the wealthy. So again, even if you believe that long-term debt is the answer, Trump singularly failed to do it so why would anyone think he would do it if voted in again.

Peace in the ME? Trump did nothing for that. He set up deals to allow his son-in-law to get his hands on 2bn of investment from the Saudis. An investment that has never been explained. He moved the embassy to Jerusalem, apparently out of spite for Palestine. It certainly wasn't done as a fig leaf for peace.

As for the court room hit jobs. Well, it appears that after 4 years of Trump draining the swamp, Biden was able to arrange for the election to be stolen, the FBI and DOJ to be completely politicised and the entire judiciary to be turned against Trump all even before Biden took office. Now, for anyone to believe that then one must also acknowledge that Trump changed nothing when he was POTUS. So yet again, believing that the court room is nothing but a hit job, once must accept that Trump failed, yet again.

Far from painting Trump in a good light, those arguments completely expose Trump as completely useless as POTUS.

Trump on response to Hamas attacks:

Mostly predictable stuff, but then there is this gem:

Trump said Monday that he would implement “strong ideological screening of all immigrants to the United States” and said the US would block “dangerous lunatics, haters, bigots and maniacs to get residency in our country.”

I hope every other country uses precisely this against him, even if he should make it to the White House.

So if the boats can't be stopped in the UK that proves that a southern border wall in USA is pointless? Thats a ridiculous argument to make. Australia proved the boats can be stopped but that a different matter entirely and a whole different set of legislation involved so try stick to the topic ok? The topic is the border wall that Trump couldn't get enough Democrats in the senate to vote on. They pulled funding , they shamed him , they called him racist for wanting to secure the border. Google 'trump border wall racist' and remind yourself what he was up against. But you're telling the wall shutdown is now Trumps fault when everybody knows it was Democrats who blocked the wall ?? You will blame everything on Trump even even when Democrats are on record telling you to your face that they blocked the wall. There's even Democrats telling Biden right now not to build more Trump wall. Your entire argument is built on falsity's and non-sequiturs regarding the UK.

What if Trump called called the border to Mexico- Taco Wall. Would you call him racist? Of course a lot a people would. So that would make San Diego racist because they built a wall on the border of Mexico and called it the Tortilla wall. That wall has been there since the early 90's and goes out into the ocean. Because national security is a bipartisan policy that has been trampled on by Joe Biden. Which is why his ratings are in the gutter and why Democrats are cities are on the verge of collapse due to Bidens disatoruios open border policy. Billionaire Democrat voters and donors are admitting Trump was right about the border and that is a larger reflection on reality than any you will ever read in here.

When the guy says TDS was worse than anything trump ever did, he is referring to democrats happy to compromise national security in spite of trumps famous border wall policy

  • Registered Users Posts: 82,433 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

It’s your wild assertion that California officials named the wall the Tortilla Wall?

The derisive name was given to it by Mexicans.

Trump killed his own border wall when he initiated the 2018/19 shutdown because Ann Coulter called him names for letting Congress reach a bipartisan deal for immigration reform and government spending that included $28Bn funding for walls. Your allegation that Democrats stopped him is not supported by the record. Trump told Mitch to kill the bill before it was allowed on to the Senate floor for a vote.

Let’s not forget that two people who attended the opening of the embassy in Jerusalem were John Hagee and Robert Jeffres, they are probably creaming themselves right now thinking the end times is approaching.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,620 ✭✭✭uptherebels

the problem with trump and his cheerleaders is that they don't usually have the brain cells to sit down and think something through.

Firstly national security lol. Anyone dodgy enough isn't walking over the border they are coming through the cartel tunnels. So wall or no wall they aren't being stopped

Secondly a wall isn't going to stop anyone going to the border. A majority of the people who arrive at the Mexico/US border come up through central and south America. Those that come through south America, pass through the Darien gap. you should have a read up on what goes on in there. It might open your eyes a little bit. then if they manage to get through that alive they then spend weeks travelling through central America where they are hassled by police and gangs, get fleeced for every penny they have, then have to deal with the Mexican and American authorities.

Yet for some reason you think a wall, least of all trumps **** wall that isn't deep enough or tall enough or sturdy enough to actually be a deterrent, is going to stop them after all they have been through is beyond laughable.

Then you have the fact that those that are picked up by border patrol and detained, a lot are released because they cant hold them all and Mexico will only accept so many back. Even when they are returned most just wait to cross again.

Biden nor America have an open border policy never have, never will. When people are willing to die for an opportunity to make a better life in America there is pretty much nothing that is going to deter them.

Now if trump actually had a plan, like a wall with increased surveillance and border agents, along with co operation with countries to return people to their home countries along with economic programs in the countries in central and south America to give them an option of a life in their own countries. After all, a lot of the problems there are from American foreign policy

But he didn't, because that would have taken brains and a bit of effort. Along with it being to complicated to reduce it to a three word slogan to throw at the clapping seals. Also a lot harder for his buddies to enrich themselves.

What cities are on the verge of collapse?

Which billionaire voters and donors are admitting trump was right?

Jim Jordan won’t be elected speaker on the first count.

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,928 ✭✭✭✭Dohnjoe

Can't the Republicans just keep holding votes until they get Jordan in? what's the limitation here?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,697 ✭✭✭Flaneur OBrien

No limit, but it won’t happen. People aren’t suddenly going to vote for Jordan because they’re bored of voting against him.

The hold outs are not the crazies but Reps in Democratic districts who will lose the next election if they vote for Jordan. They'll be very difficult to win over.
