Technotherm TTKS combination radiators

    Hi All,

I bought an apartment over the summer and found the storage heaters in hall and living room are gone and have to be replaced. I have been recommended Technotherm TTKS combination radiators as an alternative. Has anyone used them and have any reviews / advise?

I am hesitant as they don't use night time rates to store heat but I don't want to discount any idea until I have looked at it properly.

    From the literature:

"Our unique combination radiators are designed to store the heat directly into the “Heat–Retention Tablets”, without any loss of energy. When the TECHNOTHERM Radiators have achieved their required temperature the thermostat will cut the power to the Radiator. The Radiator will continue to provide heat, (that has been heat directly into the tablets), for up to 45 minutes with no further use of electricity"

What's the advantage of storing the heat in tablets for up to 45 minutes as opposed to simply emitting the heat directly ?

    Sounds like another gimmick

My starting point would always be the the newer Quantum type storage heaters

Only when I've ruled them out would i consider any of these (various) replacements that are being fitted now

The basic maths hasn't changed re:storage heating

Yes thats what I was thinking, it sounds a bit gimmicky, just said I'd have a check in case it wasnt! Thanks for your reply.

Maybe there's some benefit controlling heat output not sure

If the apartment is occupied during the day and if the house retains heat well, those favour storage heating

My apartment wouldn't be the most airtight so I am expecting heat loss (draughty windows). I have redone attic insulation recently. I am not in the apartment during the day so it would be evenings I would need heat mostly.

I would have thought that regardless of any variables a quantum combi is cheaper to run than your linked heater. I suppose the question is how much cheaper. Quantum system will be expensive.

The overnight heating cost is the same for both types of heaters , both running on cheap rate

During (all of) daytime the quantum will be outputting stored heat and only using additional day units for any boost heat needed

They claim the fan assisted high-heat retention type can retain most of the stored heat until needed

Having the same problem, having a old Dimplex storage heatersystem in the apartmen and need to upgrade them.

First was the idea of getting a a Quantum, but aftet further reading and realizing that we are never home from 11am to 11 pm, really starting to thinking to get a Electic Radiator( Oil, Ceramic or Stone tablet) and not sure anymore what to do with all the options that are available. There is not a option to install a air to air heat pump so looking for other options.

The apartman is set for Day/night rate, but having a e-mail session with ESB and Electric Ireland to sort the timeswitch as is not working at all, and hoping that they will upgrade to Smart meter( all is taking time) in some future time.

    Any idea what to do?

Portable heater that i can just sold when all is sorted is also a option.

A mini split heat pump would save you a fortune over the years if you plan to live there awhile. It can bring cold rooms up to temperature in literally minutes. It doubles as an AC unit in the summer

Would one of those heat a well insulated 3-bed semi

Each room needs an indoor unit. They are ideal for appartments, because they don't have many rooms, but not as the only heating system in a 3 bed semi imo.

Hi, what did you do at the end?

Having a old dimplex system in the apartman, and thinking to change to Technotherm radiators.

Is your apartment occupied daytime ?

Does your apartment retain heat well?

Do you have an EV or are getting one ?

Depends on the layout, I have a single 5kw unit that heats and cools the entire downstairs of a 4 bed semi. Another planned for the landing. Downstairs is mostly open plan. Upstairs we will be leaving doors open during the day.

How do you find the running costs?

I use mine more for ac than heat but find it cheap to run on both heat and cool

Running costs are low, ac uses less than heat but it hasn't been very hot this summer. Max use in one day was 2.5kwh. I do have a large pv system to offset that use.

Haven't had much cold weather to test consumption in freezing conditions yet.

    How have you found yours?

I have gas central heating. Got the mini split for AC. I find AC cheap to run. It's expensive in other countries because they are trying to keep 21c indoors when it's 35c outside. All we need to do here is drop it from maybe 24 to 21c. This doesn't cost much

In winter we would have central heating on throughout the house. Mini split is used for heat between now and October or so. It's cheaper than the gas, especially if I only need one room heated for an hour or so.

I honestly believe Mini split heat pump is ideal for an appartment
