Shell ReCharge....

To use Aldi charge points, looks like need Shell ReCharge, (yet another app). Attempted to setup an account. Can't use the PC, have to use the mobile app, (not my preferred choice, so got me upset). When apply for a charge card or fob, no option to put in Credit Card details, only IBAN. Contacted Shell, very polite reply, only IBAN in Ireland, have to have UK address to use Credit Card. Perhaps fooling myself, but feel safer with Credit Card. Definitely not going to put in my IBAN. Might enquire for other options next time I am in an Aldi shop. Thanks for listening, just letting off some frustrations.

Oh yeah I tried using Shell Recharge a while back, nice looking app but utterly useless

I wasn't able to start a single charger or register the card

It's about time it was made law or as a condition of planning permission that a charge point should accept all debit/credit card payments, contactless and/or with PIN.

It is a law, EU just passed it recently

There's an implementation time, can't remember when the cut off date is

I am well advanced in the process of opening another bank account, so I can have an alternative IBAN. I will keep very little balance in this, just enough for charging. Lot of hassle to use one company's EV charger. But feel safer having it this way. And maybe I might be stuck someday and delighted to use Aldi EV Charger. Curiously, all my other EV Charging apps accept Credit Cards.

Shell Recharge's worth setting up as, whatever about being a necessity for using Aldi's, they also have some attractive rates for certain other providers.

Anyone ever get it setup. Seems the chargers only work with the card, but you can't order the card on the app.

I have a shell recharge card. works fine for me throughout Europe. I haven't used it in Ireland. I only use the App to find chargers but use card to charge.

    I meant in Ireland.

Maybe try signing up using a laptop. I have the fob I got a long time ago. After it arrives you need to link it to the app. Revolut payment app will give you an Irish IBAN but it can take a day to put money in it from old Irish banks.

I signed up for an account with them at least two years ago and they let me to do it with no payment method. For a long they would just email me an invoice and let me EFT the money to them. If I forgot, they would politely send me the same invoice several months later. They are the most financially relaxed CPO I've ever used. The amounts were all small and related to Aldi AC charging, maybe they have a different policy if you're charging a lot.

App won't let you order a card/fob. Been that way for months now. Pity as the Aldi chargers would be useful to me

Redirects you to app. Catch 22. Came up on faceache from a new EV owner that there's no way to use Aldi chargers them, and I couldn't believe that. But it seems it's true

If there's one near you that you can't use you could update plugshare that these chargers are not usable.

Theres none near me, but one on a route I do rarely there's one with 9 plugs but no check-ins for a year and half. I guess we know why now .

Plugsurfing is claiming to work with Shell Recharge although at this price ….

    Chargepoint also at 54c/kWh

I just logged in the shell account and they say that my card is blocked. No reason just to call the UK customer service.

They might work with a charge point card/app. The chargers come up in the app with charger no and provider correctly. I've ordered a card. Not sure if there's any in Dublin to test.

Ordered a chargepoint card. Will give that a go

I just posted on the picture there, I've selected the Aldi in Santry. I've never used them but I can go and test there for you if you like. I have both chargepoint and plugsurfing cards

Be interesting to test it. I'll give it a go when I get a card.

Managed to get one of the Aldi chargers working this evening with the charge point card but it was much more expensive. Adding on another 50%

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,131 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

Thanks for that. While not something anyone's going to choose over cheaper options. It might be useful if someone was stuck somewhere.

Gonna be honest, my experience was that the app and card are both useless in Ireland

Tried starting both Ecars and Ionity chargers, literally 100% failure rate every time

Plugsurfing and Chargemap both worked here most of the time, but Shell never worked

I'd actually advise against having it as a backup since you'd want a backup to be reliable

I meant using Chargemap or similar to access the shell chargers.

Not the shell card which you can't get anymore.

Ah right, sorry I didn't realise we have any Shell chargers here
