All of this extremist anti lgbt hate really is despicable and disgusting

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

If these so-called "christians" aren't happy they can just withdraw their kids - as many parents are forced to do when 95% of primary schools hold their daily indoctrination into nonsense session.

English is a somewhat synthetic language that follows derivational synthesis patterns. While straightsplained may not have a dictionary entry, the statement itself is pretty easy to deconstruct.

They are just trying to protect their children

Honestly I'm glad Ireland is rising up

Bit strange that the leader of the protectors of children is barred from access to his own children.

And the rest of his incel army don't have any.

    Bollocks. Complete and utter bollocks.

Anybody who wants to can stop their child from joining the library in the first place, or from getting a young adult account, both of which need parental permission.

But thankfully only a few people are that pig-ignorant.

Do you think kids should be prevented from going into bookshops too? Just in case they might see a book that mentions the word 'gay'?

We used to have strict censorship in this country, then as now it's a really bad idea but people who are too stupid to work out the implications love it.

This is clearly not about the word "gay", but rather the graphic descriptions of sexual activities on such books which have been widely reported on social media. We both know that, no need to act like you know something we dont

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,741 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

Thinking that teenagers are, or are going to remain, ignorant of sexual practices is naive in the extreme. It's far better they're reading books which cover topics like consent, STDs etc. rather than just watching porn and thinking that represents reality. Most parents aren't going to provide this information and many schools don't either (for religious reasons, which is shameful)

Yep. This isn't about "protecting children" at all. It's anti youth, anti education, anti lgbt, censorship and bigotry.

Despicable and disgusting homophobic bigotry dressed up as "concern" for the children.

We all know these tactics as homophobic hate groups gave been using these for decades to justify their anti LGBT hatreds.

I wouldn't be in any way surprised if you yourself are one of the anti-gay protesters in Cork or closely connected to them.

I'm a gay man, there is nothing more homophobic that LGBT trying to depict gay people are people obsessed with teaching sex to underage kids in schools. We are the ones being damaged. LGBT does not speak on our behalf

I am not, what a random question. Do people need to have a political agenda in order to express concerns?

anti youth, anti education is teaching sex to underage kids in school. The LGBT obsession for kids is become uncomfortable and is damaging gay people.

So kids should leave school with no sex education at all? That's mad.

All content should be available at libraries. The reader decides what to read or not.

I believe the "far right" protesters fears are that this content will be strongly encouraged or even forced on kids. I my experience nobody wants schools force feeding children anything related to trans. The vast majority don't care what anyone does or feel just don't confuse our kids.

That said. The staff should have never been bothered by anyone opinions or views on anything

I wish it were that simple - I think government education departments and parents of young children need to work together on how and when sex education is delivered to their children. Personally I think it’s happening just too young but the world is a much more complicated place these days - awareness of right and wrong behaviours is good I think but maybe the how it’s done and the level of detail is just maybe too much and too young?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,741 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

There is no point trying to put a nice gloss on this. The idea that kids will change their gender identity because they read a book is stupid.

It's as stupid as the 1950s idea that homosexuality could be 'spread' (or 'cured').

And when you say "Ireland is rising" you really mean that a tiny number of far right bigots are using the lives of transport people as a wedge issue to try to roll back basic rights for gay people.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41,113 ✭✭✭✭Annasopra

It is that simple. There is absolutely nothing wrong with telling people trans people exist in an age appropriate way. No forcing, no force feeding, no confusing.

gay people, you know the LG in the LGBT+ name

the stuff that gets attached to us these days is preposterous. A lot of Gays and Lesbians do not agree with giving children access to sexual books. Too often LBGT activists speak on our behalf when we havent asked for it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,213 ✭✭✭Mic 1972

There is no need to teach kids about sexual practices

When it comes to sex and children, too much information is worse than no information. Plus LGBT people most of the time have no kids so we shouldnt be the ones setting the rules when it comes to education

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,213 ✭✭✭Mic 1972

To even think that people's concerns about their children is not serious speaks volumes as to why LGBT people shouldn't get involved in children education

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,600 ✭✭✭✭AndrewJRenko

And when did gay people appoint you as their spokesperson?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,882 ✭✭✭Quantum Erasure

It's not just letting them know trans people exist though, it's also teaching 12 /13 year olds about fisting, and whatever else...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41,113 ✭✭✭✭Annasopra

You'd swear 12/13 year olds couldn't find out about sex anywhere else 🤣. It's mad how all the book censoring bigots don't want to censor the Internet. They also only ever want to censor gay sex education.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? Wow just wow. Young people shouldn't be given any sex education at all.

They shouldn't know about consent, contraception, pregnancy, safer sex, sexual health

Thankfully your archaic attitudes from the 1950s that want to keep young people uneducated and ignorant are dying out.

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? Finally, a common sense approach.

Turns out refusing someone admission to an event because they represent a potential security risk is not a violation of their religious beliefs 🙄

No-one said there should be no sex education. The poster clearly was making a point about what types of sexual practices should or shouldn't be thought. You have an interesting habit of making one-liner responses which deliberately misinterpret the original poster!

Juno Dawson's book has noted by many posters here as not being suitable for the 12-14 age group as a recommended sex education guide. One poster here earlier said they wish they'd had proper sex education to avoid going on web sites/app like Grindr too young, and making mistakes etc.

So what does this book say about apps etc?

There is a one-line caveat that the app itself has an age limit of 18, otherwise the advice seems to be to dive in.

p.155: authors advice: "if you don't include a face pic, expect the first message anyone EVER sends to be "PIC"?

p.155: Some good advice: "If you're THAT HORNY that you want to do a "sex meet", meet the "trick" in a public place for a drink first... this is much MUCH safer"..... "ALWAYS WEAR A CONDOM"

p.157: interviewee1 "I have used Grindr - the advantages are that you can get what you want quickly. The downside is that its the same people repeatedly".

p.157: interviewee2: "The benefits are obvious: quick, easy and uncomplicated sex. On the downside, you always find the same people online whenever you're at home."

p.157: interviewee3: "If people want casual sex, then something like Grindr is a must."

some downsides: interviewee4: "I know one guy who got gonorrhoea, chlamydia and syphilis from some guy he met on Grindr. All in one go, like a three-for-two special.’"

p.169: author: "Basically, porn is fine and fun, but it is no way REAL."

p.189 author: "it makes no difference how many sexual partners you have - but dont go picking on someone else's patch, mind!"

The are of course selections, from a book which covers many topics. But still the question must calmly and politely be asked, "Do you think this book is suitable for the 12-14 age group?"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,489 ✭✭✭AllForIt

    ^^ That's gross.

That is not sex education, that is Judo Dawson teaching her lifestyle to kids.

She's basically teaching gay subcluture as if one is behoved to be part of it.

Whatever path one takes in life is fine but the path you take is part of one's own individuality. Life would be no fun if you read a book in advance about how to do life like a set of instructions.

It's not so much the book isn't suitable for 12-14 years olds. It's suitable for nobody. Unless you want to be a Juno Dawson clone.
