Saorsat - does it have a future?

    Does Saorsat have a future?

Setup a LNB the other day on my Triax just to see whats out there and its just the RTE channels. What a waste!

Is TV3 ever going to make the plunge and setup on Saorsat?

Seems a total waste of money just to have RTE channels and nothing more, surely the cost cant be defended if its just a handful of channels?

I agree for other countries but in Ireland?

Most people are lucky to get 4MB, nowhere good enough for IPTV.

So those within ROI who can't get Saorview aren't entitled to any free Irish tv? Not to mention the backup feed Saorsat provides for terrestrial transmitters in areas that can get Saorview.

But thats kind of my point, there not getting a full service. Whats the point of getting a part service?

As for Saorsat being a backup service you appear to forget that RTE is carried on Astra 28.2, that can be used quite easily for a backup. Also how did they manage before Saorsat?

As it stands I dont see how anyone can defend the cost of Saorsat in its current form.

Do you have the figures there to compare costs: Saorsat fill-in v. full terrestrial coverage, payment for Astra backup v. Saorsat backup?

What particular costs do you think need 'defending'?

In the last few days 2 test channels have appeared on saorview, maybe tv3 have finally decided to join. There is a lot of isolated areas where older people especially ,had to get sky when all they wanted was to be able to watch the news, weather and a few football games on a Sunday.

If cost was the only concern, you would put all fixed tv reception on satellite & leave the terrestrial network (& its RF spectrum) for mobile services of whatever kind.

Others might argue that having TV3 on the platform would be the waste!

Cost to be carried on Saorsat is €1,500,000 as of 2010.
