    Yeah, cheers Gumbo. I had planned to ring around. Unfortunately the CU is on the other side of the property. I fail to see how even the neatest work would not be an eyesore.

    One other consideration, do you have an isolator in the meter cabinet. If you don't you will need a rec to test the installation and provide a cert for the esb. Esb then come out and fit the isolator and the rec can then go from there. Rarely is it the better way to go.

    When I was doing some research for my own EV install, I came across a channel on YouTube called SOTA electrics, who are EV specialist installers in the UK for mainly Zappy. You'll get a good idea of the way they approach difficult installs from the CU to the charger location. It might help in deciding what way you want it done for yourself when getting quotes.

    Can anyone tell me whether the SEAI grant will involve communicating with my energy provider?

    I received a great sweetheart introductory rate from Bord Gais a few years ago and it was supposed only to last 6 months, but it is still going. It is significantly below current rates.

    I'm looking to get a car charger installed, and for the grant, they are asking for my MPRN - what do they do with this? Do they talk to ESBN? Do they talk to your energy provider?

    I really don't want to rock the boat and bring myself to their attention as I worry this might trigger them finally switching me to the standard rate, this would end up costing me more than the amount I would receive from the grant.

    Any able to shed a bit more light on this area?

    They need to make sure that you haven’t used the grant before. It’s tied to the MPRN


    they will not contact your provider

    No, your mprn is just used to check if a grant for a charger has been issued previously and added to the Seai database so it can't be claimed again.

    It's incredible how expensive they are. (even if you buy from from like Amazon)

    I've an outdoor socket, I'll be sticking with that.

    I'd be slightly concerned that someone might steal one of these items.

    You won't get 7.2kW from an outdoor socket, but if you are happy with that, go ahead.

    I charge a 40Kw Leaf once a week. Cover less than 200km a week so kinda pointless.

    If you had something with a big battery pack and were doing lots of miles then yeah, you'd need 7.2Kw

    It's still painfully slow. I charged my old phev on the granny charger until I got the CP installed it was torture and it was only a 13Kw battery, it took the guts of 6 bloody hours to fill that tiny battery, most of the time I charged it in the nearby Lidl which knocked around one and a half hours off the charge time. I wouldn't like to be charging a proper EV on one anyway.

    That's strange

    Although I've noticed this too. If I charge the EV in the GF's house it takes longer than it does to charge in my house. my house was recently rewired. I wonder are the cables better? I've calc'd is takes about 18/19 hours to charge at mine and at least 22 hours at hers.

    Different voltages will affect it but in general you’re only getting about 10a from the granny cable. Plus running the risk of burning out that socket from constantly drawing 10a for prolonged time frames.

    A CP is 32a with generally a 40a RCBO so much safer in practice.

    Each to their own though. Your Leaf would charge at 6.6kw on a charge point of 2.3ish so would charge a lot quicker if required.

    The granny cable could be cutting out due to temperature of the plug,

    If the granny charger is overheating, check/replace it the actual wall socket could be worn/corroded/loose/etc especially if it's an outside one.

    Nothing strange in my case. Granny charger max rate is 10A/2.3Kw per hour which means it takes almost 6 hours to fill an empty 13Kw battery. When I got a proper CP installed the car was charging at 16A/3.6Kw per hour(the cars maximum rate of charge) reducing the 13Kw charge time to a shade over three and a half hours. With my full EV the charge rate is 7.3Kw per hour taking almost 8 hours to charge an almost empty battery to full, that same charge would take over 22hours with a granny charger 🥴. It would be like a breast fed baby, never off the tit🫣

    I have a 7.5m cable that I removed from a dead Tesla Gen 2 charger.

    It’s type 2, 3 phase, 22kw capable. Has the Tesla button for the port obviously.

    Is it worth anything?

    I see the GivEnergy have launched their EV Charger. Integration into Giv Energy products I assume.

    My inverter and battery are Giv Energy so it will be interesting to see how they price it considering their statement is “Affordably priced, to make clean electric charging accessible to all”

    Folks, anyone any experience of the Ohme Home Pro wall box?

    Was originally going with a Zappi but after reading many stories around reliability as well as problems with BMW EV software I think going with the Ohme is a safer bet.

    Is zappi the only option if I want to be future proofed for possibly getting solar panels?

    Are there any concerns with having an air source heat pump and charging an EV at the same time? Will an EV chargers load balancing handle that?

    Also maybe a stupid question but can an air source heat pump be used in some way to aid car charging?

    Neighbour has one. No complaints so far but I do know he had awful trouble getting it to charge his MY at 32a. For some reason it was stuck at 16a. Installers had to come back out. The unit was set for 32a but it wouldn’t work. I’ll find out the current status.

    Wallbox is another option that works off WiFi instead of a data sim in the OHME but OHME have dedicated Irish based support staff.

    Data Sim seems very outdated tech these days. Does the OHME data sim need an additional subscription service or is it inclusive?

    One can buy a fairly decent new 11Kw wallbox charger in Germany for as little as €140.

    I wonder what I might expect an electrician to charge to to install it (fairly simple install close to the fusebox/house electricity meter). Would it be cheaper than going the grant route where the cost after grant often seems to exceed €500-600.

    You can still get the grant buying a charger yourself. I don’t buying from uk.

    Just bear in mind you won’t get 11kw unless you have 3 phase supply to your house.

    How much should I expect to pay an electrician for a straight swap from an existing V1 to a V2 Zappi?

    MyEnergi have a good deal for supplying the unit as an upgrade, but I was shocked at the installation quote from their recommended installer.

    I have the option of just getting the unit supplied and organising my own install. It can't be more than 30 mins work for a straight swap I would have thought?
