They're clueless, they send players off for nothing tackles, take a lot of stick for it, and then when there is a red card tackle don't act because of the criticism of past bad decisions, which leads to another bad decision of not sending a player off.

Now saying this and the offside inconclusive.

Despite having full camera of the action they can’t see when it played forward off the Newcastle player, yet if you case from the earliest possible and latest possible in every moment of that Gordon is offside but because they can’t identify the actual moment it’s inconclusive that’s the current explanation out? Stinks yet again

"got booked for this Havertz tackle" no they got booked for dissent which these Newcastle players are used to getting away with.

Plenty of passion and fight but quality wise that was rubbish.

'Newcastle have serious Premiership credentials...' No they don't.

That is massive Antony Gordon you delicious man

Can't see Arsenal challenging City this season. They look like they have gone backwards slightly from last season.

  • Registered Users Posts: 341 ✭✭bingobango12

Arsenal not quite the same as last season. Would think they will be fighting for top 4 and not the title.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,178 ✭✭✭✭pjohnson

Yeah the 3 musketeers deserved their bookings. Can't fault that.

  • Registered Users Posts: 237 ✭✭DAngelo Bailey

That's a proper big game win overcame arsenal's anti football tactics

Whatever your thoughts on the Saudi money I think the way that Newcastle squad play and fight for everything is what every fan wants from their team. They just do not give an inch and fight for every ball. So aggressive and have the quality to come up with goals too.

It’s exactly how how I’d like to see Ireland play. Aggressive, high tempo, on the front foot and just generally being horrible to play against, especially when they get the lead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,489 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

How do VAR explain that it wasn't a red, when it was a full studded out of control tackle, where he caught him on the ankle wit the raised foot, and again with the trailing foot.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 52,234 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

In any other industry you'd be out of a job after one high profile mistake. But with PGMOL they just keep making them week in week out and all that happens is Howard Webb turns up at your place with an "I'm sorry" card.

It was beyond a joke earlier in the season but it's never ever going to change with the same guys on the field and in the var room.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,117 ✭✭✭jacool

If that's what you call anti-football, you should watch Newcastle United. At least Arsenal can string together a few passes.

Newcastle's goal was mired in VAR controversy. 2 minutes later the referee is able to award Arsenal a corner with the ball in exactly the same position.

Burn was allowed kick Saka all half and no card for that. Himself and Bruno should have been off along with Havertz.

A lot of this season's "big game win"s have the smell of VAR off them.

    ?

Both teams were as negative as each other. It's a shame they couldn't both lose.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,103 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

Will they be able to sustain that for every game over the next 7 months? They're putting in massive shifts at the moment defensively and working off of the ball. I don't think they've learned to control games through midfield yet.

  • Registered Users Posts: 237 ✭✭DAngelo Bailey

All you ask is for a team to fight for everything and work and that team does

PL managers and fans had a massive opportunity to attack the PGMOL a few weeks ago.

They fluffed it and passed it off as Klopp having a whinge, when he was trying to get better standards for all clubs. Nobody backed him, he was mocked instead. Everyone thought it was hilarious to ask for replays and calling for subjective calls to warrant big apologies etc.

Well, you get what you wish for.

It's just looking for a reaction tbh.

    Talk is cheap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,117 ✭✭✭jacool

That's just unfair on him so. Can I retract, or at least apologise?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,363 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

A terrible day for referees and VAR.

Between that game, Utd and Wolves getting screwed, it's quite clear the whole system is only getting worse.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,363 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

    Nail. On. Head.

Everyone who mocked Liverpool and just told the club to move on have what they deserve.

Areta talking about the Ref and VAR team

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,930 ✭✭✭KH25

PL refs are beyond incompetent. In any other profession they’d have long been sacked. I understand that being a ref is a hard job, but VAR should help and for years the English refs have made it even worse.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,489 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

I guess it's just a coincidence that the unbelievably bad calls this season benefited the Saudi clubs, and cost their closest challengers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,103 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

Arteta tbf was one who did actually speak up a few weeks ago about the VAR stuff. His rant today is justified and he can say he has integrity because he doesn't just speak up when it affects only his team. Not many other PL managers can say that though. And I say that as someone who doesn't particularly like Arteta!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,363 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

I mean, Arteta is right, but no doubt he was thankful that VAR is useless when Havertz didn't get red carded.

I like the fact he said "this is not the greatest league in the world"!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,489 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

Aw but are they really that incompetent? It's hard to believe calls that a 5 year old could make correctly, they get wrong, with all the angles, all the replays, all the slow mo, so I think there is more to it personally. It's not believable that they're incompetent.

Like Kompany last week complaining when a VAR decision went against Burnley but after Klopp spoke he said that mistakes happen and you have to live with it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,644 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

This. That was a seminal moment, a time for the managers and teams to stand together and put a line in the sand, force changes and improvements from the FA if the EPL itself won't act. But no, let Klopp go on a solo run and snigger up your sleeves, you get what you deserve.

For the goal for Newcastle, did the ball not go backwards off of Joelinton? Camera inconclusive for the ball out of play, surely a cheap camera on each corner flag would tell a lot in these cases???

Arsenal were poor, if they were still there they wouldn't score. So soft.... They allowed the likes of Burn, Joelinton, and particularly Bruno G to kick and poke and bully them all day and never stood up for themselves. You can't rely on referees, you have to stand up for yourself, and cut the Bullsh1t.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,117 ✭✭✭jacool

"Bruno G to kick and poke and bully them“ and elbow them in the head when the ball was gone.

That was a big difference between Havertz and Bruno. Havertz could claim he was going for the ball. No way was Jorginho expecting an elbow as he'd played the ball by then. VAR bottled that one completely as it was late, cynical, nasty and off the ball.

Newcastle matches seem to be so little about actual football

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,743 ✭✭✭giveitholly

I really hope Arteta is supporting the officials after today's game

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,694 ✭✭✭✭machiavellianme

Arteta spent a lot of time being embarrassed about VAR, but if it didn't exist, wasn't the on field decision to award the goal?

The most embarrassing thing was that they had to check so many different issues and it took so long and yet couldn't find any issues. The second most embarrassing thing was Arteta's behaviour on the sidelines. He makes Klopp look like a statue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,042 ✭✭✭✭L'prof

On field decision was a goal but you’d have to wonder has the lino actually made a decision on it or is he relying on VAR to make the decision for him

That semi automated VAR would have had a definitive answer in this instance. Pity it wasn’t brought in

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,930 ✭✭✭KH25

Well that’s the other side of it, but you have to hope it’s incompetence rather than intent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,720 ✭✭✭✭thebaz

Football was better before VAR, yes ther were wrong decisions, but with VAR ther still is wrong decisions, its taken some of the magic away of football, and the joy of a goal.

  • Registered Users Posts: 191 ✭✭Bluebb993

Jeremy Doku is such an exciting player, a goal and 4 assists today. Kid is only 21. Remimds me of Hazard

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,496 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

Think you're an Everton fan so know you'd have been happy with the outcome, but Dunks strike today encapsulates what you've said there. A great strike then standing around waiting for a decision

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,390 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

He was brilliant at Rennes last year as well. Very good at retaining the ball even though he's constantly carrying the ball forward.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,363 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

Arteta had his chance after the Diaz farce. He chose to say 'mistakes happen'.

    Hold the L I'm afraid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,743 ✭✭✭giveitholly

Yes the whole premier league had their chance to say enough is enough and change is needed. But instead they preferred to laugh and sneer at klopp and Liverpool. Hard to have any sympathy for them now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,730 ✭✭✭golfball37

How did Var not conclude it was offside however is beyond me? You can throw doubt into the push on Gabriel and even the ball crossing the line but Gordon is 100% offside when the ball breaks to him. Raya is ahead of play so Gabriel is de facto goalkeeper in terms of last man.

the offside rule is two defenders behind or level with the last attacker makes the attack onside.

  • Registered Users Posts: 237 ✭✭DAngelo Bailey

Nice to see that a decision in Newcastle vs Arsenal is still about Liverpool somehow.

And the clear handball as the ball fell in between the two hands he used to push Gabriel off the ball,
