Housemate won't pay for bills

I just left my accomodation. The electricity and Gas were both in my name. I sent the final bill into the groupchat. Two of the tenants paid me ASAP but the other tenant has not and has just ignored it. I have had friction before with this housemate. Is there anything I can do?

How do you mean you left your accommodation? As in walked out for a minute in frustration or vacated it?

I gave my landlord a months notice and I found someone to take over my room. I just had to leave because I was relocating for work.

Ah right. Well mentally probably better off out of there. Financially you might be worse off if you have a forwarding address for bills in your name. Not sure what happens In the future if you’ve had an outstanding bill and go to connect to a utility service.

Call them out. Ask the other housemates for more money to cover the missing share. Better to have 3 of you putting pressure on stingy housemate than just you.

It sounds like you had a word of mouth agreement with the tenant in question. Unfortunately, if the bills are in your name and he will not pay up, there's not a lot that you can do legally.

When was the meter last read ? Call up and have a meter reading with lower values to reduce he bills , pay it and then get it transferred out if your name

You cant do that without having someone to agree to have it transferred to them ! and they would take the readings to confirm.

it defaults back to the landlord who’ll then put it on the other tenants names. He can use the same meter readings

But it needs to be transferred regardless, the OP is hardly going to continue as the person responsible.

They need to cancel it ASAP, let the remaining tenants deal with what happens next.

Taking a guess at the figures involved I would probably just tell the guy he was a **** and move on with my life, if his name isn't on any paper then there is no meaningful way to force him to pay.

not true-they may need to confirm the reading, but you can straight away cut off the electric in your name-have your name removed-tell them you are not the bill payer anymore.
