For midfield at the moment, it feels like Klopp is shoe-horning in the best footballers, rather than necessarily the best positional options. Grav, Mac, and Szob are all brilliant footballers, but none of them are naturally defensively minded... so we look good going forward, but definitely lose the edge in defence.

I totally get making that decision against Luton, the attacking output should have been enough in theory to win the game regardless of defensive frailty, but imo the sooner Endo starts playing more, the better. He's looked excellent in his recent games too, so its not like he's struggling or something, offers something no-one else does while still actually being quite decent with progressive passes. I expected Mac to be 6 until around now, with Endo arriving long after pre-season was over, but it's around now we should start seeing more of him. Now, it was January before we regularly saw Fabinho, but in that case we at least had more viable safe options like Hendo and Milner to sit back.

The inverted Trent thing might actually have some benefit if Endo is sitting back, but with Mac there Trent is just getting in his way without adding anything, and leaving big holes for the opposition to exploit. As long as we have ballers in midfield, Trent needs to be wide.

Remember when Trent and Robbo used to make shít loads of assists? They were good days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,800 ✭✭✭Enzokk

Those days are long gone, we tried that last year and we were 10th after 24 rounds of the Premier League. Just like the best teams moved to playing with one striker instead of 2 and zonal marking (or a hybrid system) instead of man marking at corners. You may have pundits railing against it but when the best teams all try to copy the same system or new supposed fad it means the best minds in football are seeing the same solution to the same problem.

Now we could return to it to bring a new problem for teams if they have prepared for the inverted role for Trent, but I think we were worked out by teams last year with our high fullbacks. Maybe it is as simple as legs in the middle of the park, but at the moment we still do not have that.

I completely disagree with the comments about Mac Allister. Having a more defensive number 6 against weaker team likes Luton would weaken us not strengthen us. The only reason it didn’t work was because Mac Allister played badly, his passing was miles off. And added to Szobo playing even worse (having probably his first poor game), it meant our midfield output was well below par.

Last year it made sense to let Trent play in the middle. Opposition had finally figured out how to stop Trent’s and Robbo’s assists from out wide and we had zero creativity in the middle, so we needed something different and it worked for the last quarter of the season

But now we’ve completely turned that upside down, we have three creative midfielders, so Trent coming inside is pointless, players getting in each other’s space and no feckin width. Klopp made a mistake not playing Kostas, Joe played well, but narrowed the pitch and overall our system made it relatively easy for Luton to defend the middle and meant we created far far fewer clear cut chances that we should have. But it was nothing to do with not having a ‘proper 6’.

Echoing what is being said already, too narrow yesterday.

No need to have Trent in that position, it was obvious that Luton would pack the midfield so we needed to stretch their midfield.

When Tmisikis and Elliot came on they stretched it much wider, should have been that way from the start.

Luton deserve credit for their performance too and were unfortunate not to nick the win.

As much as I love him Trent must be one of the worst one on one defenders in the league. It is just so easy to burst past him. Players dont need skill, just power. He isnt able to tackle and that is why I would never have him near DM.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,406 ✭✭✭✭Vicxas

I think Macallister is a brilliant footballer I’m just not sure what he’s contributing at the minute. He’s not playing very well where he is right now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,612 ✭✭✭eigrod

Diaz goal was so simple in its execution. A cross to the back post where the full back is small and have someone attack it. Just a shame it took til injury time to do it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,399 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

If Luton scored that goal you'd have lads in here slaughtering TAA or Robbo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,367 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

no, i'd still make the same argument.

yes, ultimately, the fact we didn't win is on Nunez in particular, as well as some other poor finishing and general play by attacking players. But their issues were partly there because we were far, far too narrow because of Gomez on one side and Trent still inverting. Salah and Jota really struggled to cut inside into good positions because Luton could afford to flood central areas.

    Couldn't disagree more.

We were just terrible last season so wouldn't be using that as any sort of reason as to why we shouldn't have both FBs playing further forward.

Robbo had 11 assists last year and Trent had 10.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43,311 ✭✭✭✭K-9

It's crazy that 21 assists from your full backs would be seen as a poor season!

Shows just how bloody good they are. Gomez is a decent FB but he isn't going to give you that threat.

It all comes down to results in the end. If we keep winning with Trent as the inverted player then it will work. If we start losing then we need to change it. At the moment we still have only lost one match so far this season so while we have not been at 100% all the time, even when we won the league this was not the case. In fact City at the moment you could argue has not been brilliant so far or convincing in some of their matches, but they have done enough to win and that is all that matters.

I am still amazed that we have had to bed in a new midfield, all three starters in the middle yesterday was signed this summer and they have not even had a pre-season together to gel either with Gravenberch being signed so late. Add in injuries to Robertson and suspensions due to the red cards we have had, having 24 points at this stage of the season is not bad.

Just as a comparison, I know take it with a pinch of salt as the opposition is different year from year, this is how we stood after 11 matches in previous seasons -

    18/19 - 27 points (went on a 9 match winning streak from game 12)

19/20 - 31 points (only dropped points a draw against United away and went on a 18 match wining streak after that draw - if anyone mentions City did not win the league because that was the Covid season remind them we almost had the league won before it was halted that year. That was an amazing season)

20/21 - 24 points (injuries were about to catch up to us as we lost all our fit CB's)

21/22 - 22 points (would go on to score 92 points)

    22/23 - 13 points

We have set ourselves a good platform so far to have a good season. Will we challenge again? I don't know as it will depend more on what City does than what we do, but I am just glad to see the team get the results as we did in earlier seasons. Don't forget either that we weren't always convincing in those seasons and had matches where we were lucky to escape with 3 points.

He's the biggest victim of the square peg in a round hole we're seeing this season, though. I really hope people are patient with Mac Allister because he's playing in a role that isn't natural to him and he's doing his best, often playing really well. Luton weren't a team yesterday where we needed a specialist number 6, I don't think. Midfield is such a muddle at times now that Trent's in there, clogging it up still further from what I can see. Szob looked lost for large parts yesterday probably because the pitch was so tight, too many bodies in there allied to the fact that he wasn't on song from the start. Salah too has been a victim of this during the season, operating in a role/position where he hasn't always delivered.

The fact that we under-perform so often against teams lower in the table surely has to be a sign to the coaching staff that when teams sit back and let us have the ball, we need to be smarter and not married to a particular way of playing. I know that football tactics are much more nuanced than this but we drop too many points against supposedly poorer sides.

I'd just love to see Endo as pure DMF, releasing Mac a little further and providing cover for Trent to bomb on wide.

Depending on how Endo does, it could mean more assists from Trent, Salah closer to goal, Mac operating further further.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,188 ✭✭✭mosstin

Same. Sounds like an oversimplification but putting players in their strongest positions should be a no-brainer. Klopp obviously demands more than we realise from his DMs hence the delay in putting Fabinho in there when signed initially but surely Endo would have been fine vs Luton if Klopp felt we needed a sitter against them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,965 ✭✭✭✭Osmosis Jones

Whatever about Trent's role throughout the season but if Gomez is your left back you absolutely need Trent wide on the right. Joe at LB is a non factor when we're in possession.

Sturridge on MNF right now showing why he has a future with sky sports. He's surprisingly very insightful and articulate. I say surprisingly because he dresses atrocious.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,069 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

I'd say if anything, a little extra flamboyance and personality in dress sense tends to denote a bit of extra thoughtfulness... sure how many brilliant and eloquent artists looked absolutely insane in their dress sense. Think instinctively I'd always rather hear from someone who looks a bit mad than someone in a generic cookie-cutter 'uniform' that looks the same as everyone around them. (Though of course there’s no shortage of mad lookin’ idiots too - I guess the moral is, don’t judge a book by its cover 😅)

He’s a very interesting fella who’s always had a lot more going on than just football, so not too surprised to find he’s a good listen.

I see Luton have released a statement after yesterday's chanting. A pathetic statement if you ask me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,511 ✭✭✭✭noodler

I don't believe match goers, whatever about some on boards.ie trying to get a rise, don't know what those chants mean.

Not a huge fan of this new version of MNF. Very quick fire NFL style.

Spurs going down to 9 men. Ironic.

I would prefer if the karma for Spurs after Liverpool game came against Liverpool rather than Chelsea

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,965 ✭✭✭✭Osmosis Jones

This is good if you're afraid of Spurs, they're running themselves into the ground right now and their 2 CBs are out for a few games at least with a red card and a hamstring injury.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,130 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

And they'll probably miss them both for the Man City game. Possibly Maddison too.

I don't believe in karma but tonight I make an exception!!!

We started the weekend 3 points off the top, had a very poor result & performance, and finished the weekend 3 points off the top. All in all, not too bad an outcome.

Karma is such a beautiful thing:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 700 ✭✭✭The Moist Buddha

its a terrible outcome considering who we we're playing agaisnt and the chances we missed. we should be in 2nd place 1pt off City

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,511 ✭✭✭✭noodler

The top 5/6 more condensed again.

Although... you do fear, as usual, that City will be tough to move from top spot now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,891 ✭✭✭✭klose

Well looks like we got away with the luton result as everyone bar city dropped points. Chalk it off and go again!

Gained a point on both Arsenal & Spurs this weekend.

    Any small positives!!

Interesting chat with Carra and Sturridge about Darwin's finishing.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,306 ✭✭✭Alonso77

Newcastle and City will be very happy with the weekends results. Brentford game is an obvious must win , if we can get a result at City I'd be very confident of keeping tabs with em for rest of season especially if we get the likes of Andre in Jan.

Going 6 pts behind City even at this early stage would be very hard to turn around though

Sturridge pulled a hamstring during that analysis.

    Out for four months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,399 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

We are not going to be in a title race this year, the team hasn't had time to even build a decent understanding yet.

What we need is a good solid season and get back into the CL for next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,511 ✭✭✭✭noodler

Older I get the more I feel these more medium term views are pointless.

Three points behind them 11 games into the season. Could be ten behind them this time next season

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,965 ✭✭✭✭Osmosis Jones

Don't see why we should be writing ourselves off. *Maybe* City fly to 100 points again and win the league at a canter, but maybe not. If they slip up I want it to be us on their heels, and I think we're more than good enough for that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,150 ✭✭✭Augme

Top 4 will make this a successful season. I'd have preferred if Arsenal won against Newcastle rather than bringing Newcastle closer to the race for too 4.
