Spurs manager seems a little naive, going down to 10 and then 9 and still playing a high line. They should be happy they were playing a team that struggles to score goals and not one of the other top 7 teams as it could have been 6 or more in that case. We seem to have a plan in place when going down a man, he seems intent on doing the same thing that is already high risk but doing it with one less player. Madness, but at least the supporters are happy.

Could have been double figures against some other teams judging by some of the highlights I saw. That said, they very nearly snatched a draw late on on more than one occasion so maybe he had a point.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Maybe, but then again Nicolas Jackson scored 3 goals and was still below his XG for the match apparently.

So while they had a chance to make it 2-2 before he scored his next 2, this was not the same where we held Spurs at bay and it took a injury time own goal to get the points. I don't know if we will see it but it would be interesting to see how Spurs do when they go down to 10 against a better organised attacking team.

Was funny to see Son and the Spurs fans complain about the first red though, shades of Jones where the VAR suggested the referee have a look at the incident and where the player caught the opponent high and dangerously. Fans and players really only remember the bad decisions and not the recent past where it benefitted them. Hope our friends on the Spurs thread are coping as they will be without 4 players for the next match and the injuries to Madison and Van De Ven could be serious as well.

The dude was off his feet with studs showing, he was always gonna walk. As we learned with Jones intention or no.

I'll be honest, I have no idea how xG is calcualted!

We played it different because we were playing a stronger team, and we were the away team (which is what pretty much every manager would do in that situation).

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Except he didn’t get sent off for it, and the half time commentary reckoned it was a good call as “the player didn’t mean it”

I’m assuming you are talking about Udoige’s first half tackle when he really should have seen a straight red?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,322 ✭✭✭ratracer

Yep, it was disgraceful that he didn’t see a straight red for that!

The game really is being ruined by incompetent refs and misuse/ abuse of VAR.

I don't know the exact specifics, but basically if you got the data on every single shot over say the last decade - you then can calculate essentially the quality of chances historically, and then you apply that grade to a current game.

Easiest example is penalties, where lets say 80% are scored, and its of course always from the same place. So, a penalty generates 0.8 xG. An absolute tap in, say like the ones Nunez sometimes doesn't quite manage, would be the closest to 1 xG that a chance can generate, maybe a shot from distance might generate .06 or something.

It's a lot more accurate than that but that's the broad strokes. Obviously in a vacuum it's meaningless, but if you are say winning every game based on xG but losing in reality, it's likely your luck will change assuming whoever is the missing the chances isn't a waste of time. Also probably a better quick metric for telling how a game went than say possession which I think at this point is meaningless, plenty of teams even big team essentially don't want the ball.

Find the xG data and xGc (expected goals conceded) really interesting as an indicator of what level of chances the team is generating and conceding. The xG for the Luton game was over 3 for Liverpool, and less than 1 for them, which gives a sense of how wasteful we were and how they took their chances.

There was a stat on twitter recently about Man city saying that they are rarely beaten on xG, even when they have lost (including against us) they still outscore teams on xG so teams need to be super clinical against them.

I know the above sounds super obvious but last year in the games Liverpool drew/lost we weren't creating as many chances and giving up more, so the positives I would take is that this season when we have dropped points the underlying performance was better than last year.

Can barely count the amount of fouls I've seen that were worse than Jones' and didn't see red, all since he last played a game.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,899 ✭✭✭Girly Gal

Does xG take into account the player the chance falls to, for example Salah is more likely to score the same chance Gomez would miss, it's an extreme example I know but, who a chance falls to, is often more important than the difficulty of the chance.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,147 ✭✭✭ConcertKing

Imagine thinking your team were gutsy and brave when you got thumped 4-1 by a poor side by using ridiculous tactics!

If it was us or City against them it would of easily of been double figures.

I miss when the Spurs forum was in its own weird little corner of Boards away from the rest

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,965 ✭✭✭✭Osmosis Jones

AFAIK it doesn't factor in who is taking the shot because it's essentially a barometer used to measure a player/team's performance against.

It's basically just the average conversion rate for each type of chance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,516 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

    I don't think it does.

I guess you are looking for a stat of 'what is the xG of the players that the chances are falling to' combined with 'what percentage of chances are falling to players whose actual goals is close to xG'. Not sure how accessible that stat is or what it is called, but doubtless the teams themselves will be aware of it.

I suppose it's not particularly new, since football began teams have operated under a 'make a chance for Salah rather than Gomez' principle.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,147 ✭✭✭ConcertKing

Sure they are still bleating on about beating us with 9 men as if they won the Champions League Final!

I guess when they end up trophyless again at the end of the season that will keep them warm at night! 🤣🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,044 ✭✭✭steve_r

XG isn't influenced by the player.

    Some Pl numbers from understat.com

Salah - xG of 7.73 vs goals of 8

Nunez - xG of 6.63 vs goals of 4

Joe Gomez - xG of 0.25 vs goals of zero

Maupay - XG of 3.19 vs goals of 1

It tends to even out over time but the likes of Salah, Haaland, Messi, Ronaldo and Son tend to score more goals than their xG, while the likes of Muapey etc underscore.

Watching the game yesterday I'm still more embarrassed about drawing 1-1 with Chelsea than with Luton.

Fulham leading the race for Andre now. Was heavily linked with Liverpool over the last 6 months.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,504 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

Seems odd. With respect to Fulham, if we were still interested I'd expect ours to be a better offer. And surely our interest can't have disappeared since the summer

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,965 ✭✭✭✭Osmosis Jones

Yeah all respect to Fulham but I have to assume/hope that if they're getting Andre ahead of us then it's because we've someone else lined up instead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,130 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

It's possible that Fluminense might have asked for a fee that Liverpool deem too expensive, so they walked away. That worked for Mount in the summer tbf. That article mentions €30m-€35m.

I do hope that Liverpool do have an alternative lined up though if they are not pursuing him anymore.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,504 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

If he's good enough to be a starting 6 for us then that seems like a perfectly reasonable fee, though. I'm sure there's plenty going on behind the scenes though 😋

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,508 ✭✭✭Daemonic

Fulham probably have a deal for Paulinha agreed with Bayern so have a big budget for a replacement.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,306 ✭✭✭Alonso77

Andre has said in an interview that a massive club was in for him in the Summer but he wanted to stay for the Copa - I would be amazed if he opts for Fulham if he has a choice between Pool and them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,745 ✭✭✭giveitholly

But he is not a natural no 6 at the moment so he doesn't solve our problems immediately IF he were to come in January. If we did get him in January and after he just finishing the season in South America I reckon we wouldn't see much of him for the rest of the season

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,965 ✭✭✭✭Osmosis Jones

Yeah my biggest worry with Andre is that we're all hoping for someone who plugs in and contributes right away...but he has just played a very long full season. He started 51 games in 2023!

I'm more convinced than ever that VAR should be used for subjective red cards.

If the ref missed an elbow or something off the ball then fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,594 ✭✭✭brevity

We might not be going for Andre according to David Lynch.

  • Registered Users Posts: 305 ✭✭Robert2014

I don't think there will be a race for Andre with us in it. If we are really in for him, then this deal should be nearly complete. They were never going to sell him in the summer so we've had the last few months to work on this in background, agree personal terms etc. and announce at the end of December. If Andre wants to come to Liverpool and only us, then the club cannot start a bidding war. If he is open to going to the highest bidder, then I don't see that as being us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,745 ✭✭✭giveitholly

While Andre has the potential to be a great player and probably a long term replacement for Thiago if he were to sign,I think a specialist no 6 is much more important in the short term

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,504 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

Carra saying Liverpool can't win the league this season is silly, that we can only hope for top 4. Yea he'll probably be proved right come the end of the season, but I dunno how you can say it right now, considering we're on a run of 23 unbeaten in the league, and haven't faced Man City yet, plus we've had the hardest start to the season, while City have had the easiest . Plus the two times City faced a tough task this season they've lost, away to Wolves, at home to Arsenal. I'm confident we'll give them a good game, it's a game we're looking to win for sure.

Funny thing with rumours and links such as Andre is that once we've been linked for such a long time and then it looks as if we're not actually moving for that player, we think that's a bad thing. I'm fairly certain that if this guy was the answer to our number 6 woes, they'd go out and get him - see bids for Caicedo - but the likelihood is that he's probably not up to it at our level or Klopp doesn't think he'd fit exactly into our style of play.

He seems to ask something very specific from his DMs - Fabinho and now Endo were/are very slowly embedded into the team. If we don't want him, I think that points to the player not being right for us. That said, I do hope we address the number 6 position in January - I wouldn't be too confident - as it's affecting our play and the play of players asked to take that position.

Spurs scored two, we scored 2. The whole world knows it, it was admitted to by all concerned. So I personally will not look at that game as a loss, regardless of the fact Spurs were awarded 3pts for a draw, and we were awarded 0 points for a draw. It's in the history books as a loss, I get it, but it never felt like a loss, to the players or manager. I mean OJ was found innocent, but we all know the reality.

And The grief some posters got for having a laugh about Andy Nunez 🙄🙄

Is there a reason why Klopp didn't do a press conference today?

Edit: oh, he will be later on.

Gravenberch and Jones haven't travelled because of injuries anyways and VVD rested and staying at home. Kaide Gordon has travelled though.

I don't think I ever really got any of his movies but I always enjoyed his plot twists and unexpected endings. Let's hope there's no weird midgets or Laura Dern involved.
