With about 4 days to go before it cuts off sign up as a new customer the new modem will arrive within three days, sometimes it can arrive the next day but don't cut it that fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,102 ✭✭✭Sarn

We just signup two days or so before the contract ends. You pay for the overlap but there is no break in service.

I set an account up a couple of years ago in my name to pay my mothers bill at her house. The price has gone up to about 150 euro a month which is mental. Contract is up in 2 weeks. Is it possible I can sign my mother up for a new customer deal but keep the landline phone number already at the house?

What would be the best way of doing this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,102 ✭✭✭Sarn

The disadvantage of signing up as a new customer (in a different name) is that you lose your existing landline number and tv recordings.

Saying that, I have never gone through the process of trying to transfer our landline number as an existing customer given we only use it for outgoing calls. It is probably worth querying what that process is and giving it a go, with the risk of losing the number.

Does anyone know when the Sky deal with VM comes in to place - just checked now and its max 100mb which means its still with Eir and best i can get is about 20mb (says 100mb but from previously having had Eir its really 20 if you're lucky, they are upgrading the lines in the area at the mo)

Been with VM so many years and such a rigmarole to get a deal - worst case scenario will cancel and sign up in my name but problem being losing the landline number we've had for 20+ years (was thinking move it to a virtual phone provider then move it back if that would work)

Yeah it's a real pain ringing up every year. I'd nearly pay an extra fiver a month to avoid it.

They really rip off customers who aren't prepared to move or at least threaten to move

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,151 ✭✭✭bren2001

Its probably easier to change the payment details to her if thats what you're looking to do, no?

EDIT: NVM, you want a new deal. yeah, you lose the landline.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 303 ✭✭theglobe

I live on my own and just canceled VM. Am I right in thinking I could create an account in say my sister's name with the same payment details and they'd send out a new box and treat me as a new customer?

I am yet to hear back about improved deals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,515 ✭✭✭CoBo55

Just use your middle name in the application if you don't use it already, a different phone number if you have one makes it easier if you ever have to ring them. I've swapped between bank accounts. I think they'll take Revolut now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,151 ✭✭✭bren2001

I've used the same name, bank account, email etc. Only thing that triggers their system is the mobile number, that has to be different. Just buy a sim and use that.

Just for info folks, my TV/broadband 12 month contract ran out with virgin media and I rang to cancel. Was offered the same half price offer for 54pm 9 months then full for 3 months. This was after they offered 15pm off and then after a no deal they offered half price for 6 months. They eventually offered 9 months half price when I asked to cancel. I'm in the lucky position to have siro at my address so I can switch to sky for much less which they no doubt take into consideration.

Contract up at the end of this month. Sent the cancellation email with a months notice, was offered €55 per month for 500mb.

I rang back today to confirm cancellation and was offered €50 per month for 500mb, again I said not a hope, then I got the offer of 1gb for €40 a month for 12 months so took it.

Happy with that offer considering it’s €45 per month for 1gb for new customers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,515 ✭✭✭CoBo55

Good price, 1gig isn't as reliable as the 500meg, I've had to reboot the modem more times than I ever had to do with the 500meg, speeds would randomly drop to single figures.

  • Registered Users Posts: 532 ✭✭✭Cookiee

Does it matter if there's a bit of over lap between old customer's 30 day cancellation period and new customers sign up date? With how my family is arranging it they'll be about 2 weeks where 2 plans will be active at the same time, I suppose we could just say we're new tenants?

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 35,118 Mod ✭✭✭✭AlmightyCushion

It doesn't matter. Just unplug the existing boxes and plug in the new ones. It works fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 473 ✭✭robnet77

Is there a logic reason for this type of behaviour?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,823 ✭✭✭✭fritzelly

Just sent the cancellation email, 30 mins waiting wait time on the phone, wait and see if they offer anything

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,515 ✭✭✭CoBo55

Nothing that I could see, the info from the router is sparce to say the least. Speeds dropped to rock bottom this afternoon but I couldn't reboot the router as I had somebody working from home, it seems to have regained its composure by itself. I never ever had to do anything like that when I had 500.

Sky install happening tomorrow so will report back. Virgin did try to retain me but decided to continue with sky so I have them installing and can then switch annually to whatever I get - also a good time to do it as black Friday offers are usually good. Modem isn’t coax so interested to see what sky install and from where.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,823 ✭✭✭✭fritzelly

Just checked there and still not available, deal started end of October between them. Hoping I get a good deal off VM at this point

the sky deal relies on you being in a fibre area - virgin upgraded mine a few months ago. Didn’t have fibre anyone else.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,823 ✭✭✭✭fritzelly

I can get 1gb, cables round here were upgraded a few years ago

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,515 ✭✭✭CoBo55

I'd say they're going to ignore the VM cabling and either put you on fttc or run new fibre into the house putting you on ftth. Be very interesting to see what the installer does or doesn't do, some of them couldn't be bothered whether they connect you or not.

What speed did they say you were going to be getting?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,023 ✭✭✭Greentree_uk

Sky installed. They installed fibre into the home - it was virgin team that did it. Plugged in the sky box and all active. I just went with the 500mb package with TV for €49. Install location at their most convenient point which is an outside wall. Fortunately I have some cat 6 points right beside it to locate the sky box in my comms cabinet

Still waiting on the fibre to be activated in the area after the install at the start of the year.

Then it’s bye bye Virgin. 80 quid per month for broadband. Crazy

Went through the whole phone call rigmarole to no avail and cancelled. If I do the reorder under the wife's name do I need to wait the 30 days or how does it work? Want to avail of the back Friday deals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,515 ✭✭✭CoBo55

Order now if you like, just plug in the new router when it arrives, sorted.

Currently paying €96 per month for 250Mb BB/TV/Phone.

Called VM. Initially offered €15 off for 12 months which I rejected. Then VM supposedly checked another system which offered me a loyalty offer of half price for 6 months. Told VM it wasn't enough so proceeded to cancel.

Four days later I received a text message. "At VM we are sad to see you are leaving and we do not want you to go. Would a half price offer make you stay? If so, give us a call on 1800-940199." Happy days I thought! I called and was offered six months half price again. No room for improvement so I said good bye for a second time.

Four days later (on a Saturday morning!) I received a call from a nice lady who was authorised to make me an improved offer of €49 per month for 12 months with an upgrade to 500Mb BB. Decided to take it, but I really am fed up with this annual runaround.

Tip: Check your VM profile to ensure your marketing preferences (SMS/Email/Phone/Post) are all set to "On" so VM can contact you after you cancel.

What is considered a good price for the who package with both Sports and Movies?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,359 ✭✭✭DubDJ

Called up last week. Was 30 mins waiting around on hold.

Previously had been on 60 per month - 250MB BB only. Had also had 9 months half price offer.

Very quick call and was eventually offered upgrade to 500MB for €70, first 9 months at half price (€35). Had the usual back and forth with offers but was very brief and nice fella.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,515 ✭✭✭CoBo55

That's a bad price for 500meg their black Friday deal has 500 for €35. When I'm out of contract next year I'm paying no more than 35 to any provider and I'm going no higher than 500meg, anything over that speed isn't needed for a domestic setting.

My apologies I thought it was BB only, good price for TV included.

Just has eir 500mb on new fibre lines installed - im within my 14 day cooling off currently. speeds good so far. 24 month contract for 40 quid broadband only.

have phoned VM to cancel (73 pm for 370mb) -offered 55 pm 12 month contract for 500mb. She also said that the annual increase on eir can be up to 11% of undiscounted rate (CPI + 3%)(looked at their website was 8% in 2023).

VM have CPI + 3.9% so is this not amounting to something similar?

Are Eir new fibre speeds likely to get worse? congestion etc?

she also said Eirs T&Cs agree to automatic price increases if co wants to - not so with VM apparently.

Anyway in 2 minds now - any advice?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,515 ✭✭✭CoBo55

I don't like 2 year contracts myself and she is correct in saying the price will increase each year with Eir. Personally I'd cancel Eir and go with VM as a new customer, 35 a month for 12 months.

I have a 360 box and a sky sports package all of which have gone completely off the rails in cost. My 12m contract is up ( contract summary date 13th September) . I will try to negotiate a reasonable deal first but if I have to move all to the other half's name ( I know we might lose landline ) I will.

Are they still entitled to 30 days notice on an expired contract?

Am I naive in thinking it's in their interest to leave the same box here and simply switch name on account or do I not let on its the same house and do a "Lanigans ball " on it - letting her step in when I step out? Presumably I would have to send box back while they send out a new one?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,638 ✭✭✭dubrov

I got the call 2 days before my cancellation kicked in.

The first offer was €35 per month for 12 months (500MB broadband) which I accepted so call was over in 5 minutes.

The previous day I rang Sky to see if they could switchover from Virgin but use the same lines. That way I could switch every year back and forth without this haggling hassle. Apparently it would only be possible if I was on the newer Virgin cabling so only phone line connection was offered. The customer service was surprisingly good though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 39 Legit_ie

Been paying over 100 pm for a long time with VM. Called today and was offered 49.50 pm for 9 months which I rejected and asked for 12 months, but no budge on that.

Was told now that the cancellation is in process, I won't be able to get that offer again.

Hoping that whatever internal process they follow up with happens now before the cancellation date next month (have turned on all the marketing preferences), although might be better to go for one of the seasonal deals they have, and just use a new name. Has anyone gone through that and confirm there's no issues?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,939 ✭✭✭Gusser09

It's sporadic. You might have issues and you might not.

Is Sky available in your area? MIght be worth looking at their websites.

  • Registered Users Posts: 39 Legit_ie

Cheers. Can't seem to sign up online at the address and says to give them a call - will try later.

Hey, cancelled 24 days ago and haven't heard anything back from VM since. My wife and I have been switching annually.

We don't really want an XBOX S (black Friday VM deal), we just want to pay as less as possible.

We are cautious about moving to Sky as we are renting. Would they need to drill holes in the house to install or is that all gone these days? There is an old phone line. Any thoughts would be great

  • Registered Users Posts: 762 ✭✭✭fmul9798

Once you submit the cancellation request, can you back out before the termination date ? (Thinking if replacemrnt service doesn't work out well, as can use cooling off period for that)

Been paying over €100 a month for 250MB and max TV.

Rang up. Fought my corner (I've been having issues on and off the last 12 months).

Got 1GB and multi room for half price for 12 months, so €65. Delighted with that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 821 ✭✭✭SEORG

I had been on 500 MB for over a year paying €71/month.

I was waiting over an hour on the phone and the call dropped 30 seconds after starting to speak to the customer service agent.

Luckily, the polite young lady rang me back & offered me 1Gb for €40/month for 12 months, basically the new customer offer.

    Happy with that.
