Had that been England that beat Gibraltar 14-0 all the talk would have been about how great England are, it was France so it’s all about how poor Gibraltar are. Least we forget Gibraltar we’re the only side Ireland beat in the group and in one of the games with Ireland at home we won 3-0 and it took us 52 minutes to break them down and there was no talk about how Gibraltar should not be in the competition. I remember when Greece used to be the whipping boys and then they won the Euros.

Face-saving equaliser for England there. Are they on telly anywhere?

It's on Channel 4 - goal ruled offside.

I would recommend switching off the second the match is over though, Joe Cole on the punditry and christ, it's beyond painful (and borderline xenophobic) to listen to.

I guess they're blocking irish viewing or something... i'm abroad anyway, was just watching a C4 stream. Have switched over to the Italy one now though, since there's something at stake there.

So glad Iraly made it through. At least they tried to win the game tonight throughout the entire 90min.

Ukraine only tried to attack in the last 10min, strange tactics for a team that had to win.

And as usual, irish commentator said, "typical Italian performance". I thought they were very good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,021 ✭✭✭bren2001

Ukraine can feel pretty hard done by not having that penalty awarded in the 93rd minute.

Yeah thought it was nailed on.

Then again, had Mudryk spent the entire game up to then diving about, he may have got it. Think he cried wolf too often.

And to be fair to them, the Ukranians didn't make a big deal of it during game or after.

Not to be putting a bigger downer on us than we already have, but I genuinely think at the moment we wouldn't get through any of those. Path C would be our best shot.

It's dis-heartening to know that we're around the 30th place ranking in European football, and that even with a 24 team tournament, we're going to be struggling to qualify for a while yet. And whatever about the Euro's in 4 years time, I'd say we can forget about the World Cup.

Unless of course, we get a quality manager who can turn things around and a few more Evan Ferguson's pop up in the next 2 years.

But the current situation? It'd depress you.

It's a joke of a system. Queued for 4 hours, then nearly no tickets available and none for the dates and location that i can manage. Yet there's hundreds for each match up on stubhub.

Never seems to be any shortage of tickets amongst the touts.

I see UEFA have come out and said only captains can speak to refs and other players "risk" being booked. Haven't we heard this before. I'd love to see it happen. I know refs can't book every player that challenges them but a warning then a booking in the 1st few games might help.

England training camp squad announced. 7 will have to be cut to bring it down to 26, wonder who they won't take. You'd imagine Quansah or Trafford won't make it. Doubts about Shaw's fitness too. Hard to see him sticking with Wharton or Jones either. Forward wise you'd imagine it's Grealish vs Bowen vs Eze and Toney may miss out too.

Good few other squads announced too I think Portugal named theirs today and France named theirs a few days ago iirc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,878 ✭✭✭Deeper Blue

    Portuguese squad

    Goalkeepers: Diogo Costa, Sá, Patrício.

Defenders: António Silva, Danilo Pereira, Dalot, Inácio, Cancelo, Nélson Semedo, Nuno Mendes, Pepe, Rúben Dias.

Midfielders: Bruno Fernandes, João Neves, Palhinha, Otávio, Rúben Neves, Vitinha.

Forwards: Bernardo Silva, Cristiano Ronaldo, Diogo Jota, Conceição, Gonçalo Ramos, João Félix, Pedro Neto, Leão.

Haven't heard much about them as potential winners but I think they're up there with that squad.

Balls anyway. He left out Henderson and Rashford.

I was hoping Southgate's loyalty would screw England. I'm getting worried now that he might actually get brave enough to play Foden and Bellingham in their preferred positions.

If he drops Maguire all hope is lost.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,037 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Interesting that Matheus Nunes has been dropped from the Portuguese squad. That Man City move has been a real disaster for him.

Also, so many inexperienced players in that England midfield collection too, bit surprised they wouldn't just bring someone like Ward-Prowse along as well for that bit of experience and composure. Obviously best known for his set pieces, but a very solid player otherwise too and would suit that work-horse double-6 Southgate likes. Let's say you start with Rice and Mainoo - if you're hanging on in a knockout tie a goal up with 20 minutes left, I'd much rather be bringing on a steady lad like Ward-Prowse than Wharton, or more naturally attack-minded guys like Jones or Gallagher, or even Trent. Maybe there's Stones, but he should already be starting CB.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,058 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Kroos retiring from all football after the Euros.

What a joy he has been to watch. Will be missed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,657 ✭✭✭The Rooster

    Bellingham - Rice - Trent

    Saka - Kane - Foden

That's some exciting 6 if they could get the midfield to gel.

The defence is a different story. Shaw's a decent rather than brilliant left back, but if he doesn't make it (which Southgate suggested is a distinct possibility), they are down to 0 proper left backs. Gomez has done reasonably well as left back this season, but just as a stop-gap, there's no way he'd ever be Liverpool's first choice LB. Maybe Stones or one of the RBs would be switched.

I think Toney gets the nod over Watkins as Kane's back-up, given England's obsession with having penalty takers.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 52,233 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

I reckon Wharton won't make the 26 when they whittle it down. 4 Palace players is mad when you think how drab they were up to Roy's departure. Left back is definitely, definitely a problem for them so I'm somewhat surprised they didn't draft in Tyrick Mitchell as well even for cover instead of one of the centre halves.

Considering the season Watkins had I reckon he's a lock for the squad. Think Toney will miss out. If Watkins doesn't get in this time he might as well retire

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,091 ✭✭✭trashcan

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,117 ✭✭✭jacool

You must be out of touch. I, and probably 98% of people here, could tell you what clubs they play for. England are one of 3 teams that can win this. Their biggest handicap, is actually their manager!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,330 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

their biggest handicap may be their manager but it may be penalty shootouts or it may be their defence

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 799 ✭✭✭MICKEYG

Agreed. Defence and especially keeper are weak. Very very strong everywhere else though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,091 ✭✭✭trashcan

Well yeah, I did say. Think I counted seven that I’d genuinely never heard of. Trafford, Braithwaite, Konsa, Guehl, Quansah Wharton and Eze. I’d see bits and pieces of Match of the Day but I wouldn’t follow it closely.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,037 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

This would've been the first PL regular season for Trafford, Branthwaite, Quansah, and Wharton alright. Guéhi (Palace), Konsa (Villa), and Eze (Palace) have been regulars in the PL a good few years now. Good to see a reasonable number of spots going to players outside the theoretical 'big' teams
