Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

It will give the no war for oil protesters something to do for a while.

They'll get confused if the US steps in to stop Venezuela waging war for oil though.

Allowing larger countries to unilaterally attack & attempt to annex the territory of smaller countries is not a good precedent. That goes for Russia trying to steal Ukrainian land, Venezuela trying to steal this land or Israel trying to steal Palestinian land. it's a shame that the USA & UK give so much support for one of those examples because it dilutes their moral standing in opposing the others.

I wouldn't want to be around the Venezuelan embassy today.

This is not new, Venezuela has always claimed this disputed territory. The referendum legitimizes this claim (in the eyes of Venezuela at least).

Can Venezuela even afford a war?

Probably not but uncle Vlad has probably promised to back them to the hilt if they invade and occupy

Most of the oil fields in that region are administered by Exxon.

I don't think the US government will be too happy if US citizens are abducted or killed in any kind of conflict in the region, or the assets of an American mega corporation are seized or destroyed.

The Chinese have been also been making inroads in Venezuela too , could be interesting going forward

Its a whole load of nothing

Its just a referendum to affirm their claim that X should be mine

Like Argentina voting to affirm their right to Las Malvinas.. it wouldnt mean theyd actually do something.about it.

Or if we voted to affirm our right to rockall... it would not lead to war. Disputed territories happens all over the world without actual war, Venezuela do not have the funds or stability to pursue an outward war

Honestly, compared to the Armed Forces of Guyana, even the Venezuelan military in its current state is vastly superior. Heck, even the Irish Defence Forces would probably be able to beat Guyana in the field, they'd have the advantage in numbers and air superiority.

The big question is whether not just the US but also the UK, Netherlands and France, all of whom have territories in the area, would simply stand by. French Guyana, and France's space launch facility in Kourou, is about an hour's flying time away, and you can bet that France is not going to take any chances with such a strategically important facility being that close.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

Venezuela to announce there new province with a new map and new oil explorations being planned,

So much for they won't do anything

Now that they have oil they should become wealthy.

They have the largest oil reserves in world yet are a complete basketcase of a country

Bold and Bankrupt last few episodes on YouTube have been about travelling thru Venezuela and last couple he traveled alongside refugees fleeing the regime

Quite eye opening, they can’t event feed their people and military good luck invading thru an equatorial jungle while the US bombs what little infrastructure is left back to the Stone Age
