Plenty of research that concludes rapid increases/decreases of Earth's temperature have happened in the past - without SUVs and diesel engines. While human activities are somewhat complicit in the current slight warming we are observing, I am of the opinion that said complicity is akin to farting in the back seat of a car accelerating down the road and thus increasing it's overall speed.

Current global warming is not a natural cycle, there are no identified natural drivers causing current warming. All indications are that natural cycles would have taken us back to an ice age in around 8k years, which means natural cycles are causing cooling and are in fact masking some of the warming we are causing.

Waving your hand about natural cycles without quantifying what that means now is profoundly ignorant.

    Yeh right

Look at the post I started this thread from Shoog,

    Data supplied by the Smithsonian!!

My take on Global warming - AKA Climate change.

So planet Earth has been warming up & cooling down since the beginning of time. Going from extreme cooling periods in the form of ice ages (mini or otherwise), warming up and cooling down. You only have to look at our Christmas postcards to see that winters were much colder a century or two ago, then not so cold. Two thousand years ago the Romans tended their grapevines in the North of England when temperatures were much higher, then the climate changed and temperatures dropped again, now global temperatures are rising in the form of Global Warming (which nobody disputes)!

The argument as I see it goes thus .....

"Climate change is man made", caused by our burning of fossil fuels, leading to a buildup of carbon dioxide in the upper atmosphere which causes greenhouse effect, which traps the heat inside our atmosphere & the planet heats up, and this all sounds hunky dory and logical but - Global warming has happened so many times before we even existed on this planet, before the first humans breathed their first breaths our atmosphere was warming up^ & cooling down, so I would argue that we are not necessarily responsible for climate change, although I would agree that we might be partially responsible (because of fossil fuels) and the burning of ....... but I would say that we are not 100% responsible as the planet is just going through yet another cycle of warming up, before it cools down again.

Every change has a cause, what is the natural cause of climate change as we see it today. Be specific now , what exactly is causing climate change.

Cause = The natural cycle of the planet including a percentage (unknown) of warming due to human activity.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,676 ✭✭✭thinkabouit

60% of the planet is desert

And the burning of fossil fuels & habitat destruction.

    So human management of resources.

12 month hottest streak since records kept in the 1800's.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,590 ✭✭✭cfuserkildare

The records only started I think around 1880.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,590 ✭✭✭cfuserkildare

So the Earth is 60% desert.

    Answer us a quick question??

How much of the planet is Ocean??

Don't think you'll get an ansewr as he was thread banned.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,676 ✭✭✭thinkabouit

60% of the planets land is desert or desertifying. Can be seen clearly on google maps on satellite setting.

New podcast on JRE about will harris of white oak pastures. Very interesting and makes a whole pile of sense.

You can tell, without even opening it, just from the title of this thread what way the OP is going to go.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,676 ✭✭✭thinkabouit

I meant the worlds land. Im obviously Not including oceans.

  • Registered Users Posts: 583 ✭✭✭InAtFullBack

Records started earlier but "suspicions" were cast over pre-1880 temperatures. Yet, the 1850-1880 climate set is regarded as the 'optimum'

  • Registered Users Posts: 583 ✭✭✭InAtFullBack

Temperature charts from computer models are not a replacement for ground level observations using quality Stevenson Screens in optimum locations.

The amount of times charts like these have been bandied about across media and social media as some sort of iron clad proof the world is 'boiling'. Junk science, plain and simple.

Visit the page that churns out the charts used to make maps like the above and it says:

Please Note: The area-weighted mean temperatures shown this page are model-based estimates from the NCEP Climate Forecast System. Any apparent record high or low daily temperatures should be considered 'unofficial' and evaluated against other climate data products and weather station observations. For long-term global climate time series, refer to monthly means of surface temperature observations 1850 to present available from NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) Climate at a Glance.

    Source: Climate Reanalyzer

Anyone taking the above glorified computer drawn crayon maps as some sort of 'proof' are quite deluded to say the least. You cannot begin to say that the last twelve months (ending 31st October) were the hottest ever streak.

    Why?

Because the observational data has not yet been collected, quality controlled, validated and published yet.

Not from the picture’s iv seen. It’s a big problem either way.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,590 ✭✭✭cfuserkildare

It seems to be that there is a fierce resistance against non media based information around this post.

Again Global Warming is a Fact,

But the causes pushed by the media are incorrect, ask the head of Cop28!

Global warming is a cyclic event that has happened several times over the last billion years, initiated the rise of the dinosaurs and many other life forms since 800million years until today.

How many diesel cars existed in the Cretaceous period?

    Or the Jurassic?

Face facts, it will happen even if humanity vanished tonight!!

Utter nonsense. You really haven’t a clue. We are concerned with the current climate as it relates to the current natural greenhouse gas balance and the relationship to the current ocean and landmass geography, not 65 million years plus ago when the continents oceans and vegetation, oxygen and othe aerosol gases were entirely different. It’s about the additional man made gases added in last 150 years against the natural stress it should be.

Ask the head of Cop28 lol, the f**king arab oil baron

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,590 ✭✭✭cfuserkildare

    Yeh right.

5 million years ago how was the temperature and co2 content?

Do you think that after several million years worth of glaciation the temperature would stay at its lowest?

Of course it has to rise!!

Or do you not remember the basic aspects of physics, geology, geography and simple thermodynamics??

  • Registered Users Posts: 602 ✭✭✭scottser

Sure, what's another mass extinction event between friends? Throw another tyre on the fire there lads.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,791 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

And every time, people such as yourself can't produce research. Global warming is a scientific reality and it is caused by humanity.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,590 ✭✭✭cfuserkildare

    Ehmmm

Did you miss the data from the Smithsonian at the very beginning of this post?

  • Registered Users Posts: 239 ✭✭tikka16751

How is Eamonn Ryanair gettting on in cop? Is he staying awake?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,791 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

Erm, the chart you're referring to doesn't prove that and the causes of those massive co2 increases are documented by it. If anything it very much so backs up that global warming is caused by humans.

"A preliminary global temperature curve shows that marine life diversified in extreme heat (1) before land-based plants absorbed carbon dioxide (CO2) and polar ice caps formed (2). Volcanoes and erosion swung CO2 levels up and down (3), but mammals evolved in a warm period (4). Now, humans are rapidly warming the climate again (5)."

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,676 ✭✭✭thinkabouit

So we have established without a doubt that human’s are & have been causing global warming for a long time.

how can it be anything else other than our management & decision making.

    Agreed 👍

Yes Global Warming is real & measurable, and we are contributing to it, but we're only one factor in the mix as the planet embarks on yet another natural cycle.
