Mogwai supporting Lankum? Unacceptable. Yes i know you can go all give me multiple reasons why. But...no.

    Why unacceptable?

Lankum recently did a sellout run of 3 nights in Vicar St

Last time I saw Mogwai they did 1 night in Olympia minus the gods being open

They're a far bigger draw at the mo and sonically pushing boundaries further than Mogwai

they are just moaning cause they dislike lankum

They are also playing Dolans and Leisureland before Christmas.

This has potential if they add one or two good names given there are two stages. Black Midi (Rough Trade, Spud Murphy connections and have shared a bill recently) would be superb.

Well at least you get it 😀

Like i said, you can give me loads of reasons why Lankum would be over Mogwai but it still doesn't make it right to my ears. Stick Spiritualized on that bill and i'll head along though 🙄

Any info on stage times for In The Meadows?

    Is it 2 separate stages?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,763 ✭✭✭Fanirish

3 stages as detailed on their social media with stage breakdowns

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,209 ✭✭✭johnnykilo

Are stage times out for this yet does anyone know?

Are the stage set-ups the same as for FF last weekend?

It's hard to find any info on this festival considering it's on in 3 days time!

    Looks like….

    This is the Kit

    Mercury Rev

    Mogwai

    Falafel Wrap if it's going

    Lankum

    For me.

No rain forecast at the moment, should be a good day out.

Bit of a misstep by Lankum in Kilmainham? They only gave themselves 75 minutes. Came on at 9:30 and bang on 10:45 the stage manager came on stage and signalled to them to stop playing. He had to come back on stage twice before Lankum reluctantly cut short their last piece. Strick on the curfew, are they fined for going over curfew time? Their set felt short and they could have done another 15/30 minutes.

More of an indoor band for me.

Mogwai suited outdoors but wish it had been darker.

This is The Kit, whom I love, were perfectly suited for the time of day.

It was outstanding. Took that on my way out.

Sipping pints, lying on the grass in the warm sun and listening to Cormac Begley was the highlight of the day for me.

Think I got progressively colder during the rest of the day and was freezing by the time Lankum finished up, which impacted the enjoyment.

Long queues at the drinks bars later on though and they seemed to run out of all pints?

    Nice day out overall.

Twas a bit chilly alright, deceptive.

Really enjoyed Lankum as always, but would agree that the acoustics in doors suit them better than outdoors.

Clear Away in the Morning, their second song, was very low for much of it, and we were only 20 people back from the front.

Enjoyed most of the bands on the day. Sound was muddy for John Francis Flynn and he didn't really do much to give his set energy really - Tralee Gaol was the exception.

Really enjoyed the day. Saw some great acts, Mercury Rev were my highlight.

Hope it becomes an annual festival.

My only gripe was the pints were shite. At ATN the Guinness and Rockshore I had were of a really good quality for festival pints. The pints I had yesterday weren't great.

Cormac Begley and Mercury Rev were my highlights. I don't get Lankum at all. I know lots of people with great music taste rate them, so it must be just me.

Thought the beer would be dreadful and overpriced so I took a solpadine before going in - took another in the Thomas House with a pint of cider and didn't feel the cold at all. Codeine had kicked in by night time. Missed This Is The Kit cos I started watching Dublin being murdered by Kilkenny but enjoyed Mogwai and everyone sitting down like a 1965 folk festival. It went all electro at one stage and thankfully they had Guinness.

Was an fantastic day, seen most of the acts I wanted to, cormac begley, this is the kit, tara clerkion trio and and rachelle lavelle were fab, the weather, crowd/vibe made it. Guinness bar running out of Guiness was shite but these things happen. The pints I did have were on par with ATN last year, ie grand.

Really hope it becomes an annual event.

Yeah I had a great day at this but Mogwai are one of all time favourite bands and I really like Lankum so I was an easy sell. Very impressed with Mercury Rev who I hadn't seen since around 2000 in Cork. Kinda wish Mogwai had been in the tent too as the sound was great in there but it was pretty nice to watching them in the sunshine too! They ran out of pints at 7.30pm at the bar near the main stage which was a farce. That and the lines for the food being interminable were my only gripes. It was all very civilised.

I agree with previous poster re Lankum though. They played extended versions of songs that were already quite long so if they even played 8 or 9 songs that's probably all. If they could have cut them back and given us a couple more tunes that would've been better.

I have to say though, seeing a modern Irish trad band closing main stage at a festival was pretty great (I know they curated but still)

Ed Power in the Irish Times gives Lankum a very generous review. Have to say I didn't think the gig was quite as stellar as he did, and would have preferred far less politics and more music from the Lankum lads (Radie didn't really join in with them).

However, overall, the venue, facilities and selection of acts made it a great one-day festival and I hope it becomes a regular. I think we were very lucky with the weather, the experience would've been a lot different if we'd got the damp and rain of Sunday.

Yes, brit bashing stuff was a bit stupid when there was likely a good few british people in the audience. First time at a concert there, very impressive venue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 135 ✭✭terminator74

had a great day. Venue, chilled crowd and sunshine set the day up nicely. Mercury Rev and Mogwai were very good. I like Lankum so enjoyed the set. Have to agree with other posters that the two brit bashing comments were childish and unnecessary. Rockshore is p*ss, cant believe the slop up that excuse for a lager at gigs…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 227 ✭✭prosaic

Black Country New Road were the highlight for me, although only got in about 7pm.

    Agree re Lankum immature politics.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,763 ✭✭✭Fanirish

going to an Irish traditional/ folk band and complaining about a few throw away Brit bashing jokes? What do you think a chunk of Irish folks songs are about.

Congratulations, a double whammy of ignorance - you clearly didn't hear the comments and know very little about Lankum.

I know your real talent is in wheeling out some numbers about how such or similar comments = big ticket sales, big attendances, and millions of quid for some other, not-comparable acts, but you might lay off on going there, please.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,763 ✭✭✭Fanirish

I did hear the comments including the one before rocky road to Dublin (where Ian was summarising the songs themes including dislike of the British) and I know a lot about lankum as I’ve seen them dozens of times over the years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 369 ✭✭TenPicnics

    "Dozens of times" … riiight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,473 ✭✭✭Dreamweapon

What did they say? Genuine Brit-bashing or a couple of throwaway comments?

My mate who went enjoyed the day. Reckoned Mercury Rev were the standout act but that the volume was too low for Mogwai. He also thought Lankum were very good.

he mentioned that Rocky to road themes include the character of the song dislike/hatred of the British which got cheers from the audience and when mentioning Palestine he mentioned colonialism and how ireland our own exoerience with it.
a few directed mentions but to call it Brit bashing is ridiculous.

Definitely not actually Brit bashing. Shaming their ancestors for being colonising **** is not Brit bashing, its honesty. They were fairly restrained. This is just more begrudging from people as always- if we have a band get huge, the naysayers will crawl out of the woodwork claiming they're shite. If we win a medal at the Olympics the naysayers will say we should have won 2.

Lankum are a genuine talent, being recognised by anyone with common sense. Makes a nice change from Picture This and Dermot Kennedy, who seem like nice lads with unbelievable good fortune

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,984 ✭✭✭Polar101

Does anyone know what the capacity was at the festival? It felt like maybe 6000 people to me, but I really have no idea.

Lankum's set was quite short, wasn't a fan of the guy coming on to the stage a couple of times and tell them to stop playing (or else). I understand there's a curfew since it's outdoors and in a city, but they could've started earlier to do a longer set. But yeah, was pretty good for an outdoor gig - it's not like they are a stadium band. At least not yet.
