Trippier is having a terrible week

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,118 ✭✭✭happyoutscan

He's 33 and played a ridiculous amount the last few weeks.

    Bad management.

Tyndall really has the look of a man who hasn’t a clue but stands there talking to Howe as if he truly believes he will come up with all the answers any minute now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,977 ✭✭✭doc_17

Moyes will generally keep a team where they are. That’s about it. He isn’t elite, but then again, what elite manager would take the West Ham job? Their only hope is that they get lucky catch one on the way up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,612 ✭✭✭eigrod

    Could be 5-0 easily

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,720 ✭✭✭✭thebaz

The football under Moyes is dire, lucky deflected goals , then parking the bus , West Ham have a talented squad of players , yet Moyes just parks the bus - he has taken West Ham as far as he can , if doesnt go , most of that talent will leave or down tools.

The worst thing to happen to West Ham was winning their first trophy in years? They'd take that any day over a slightly higher pl finish

Poch also calls for January signings: “We need to talk and to try and improve in the next transfer market”.

    Pretty crazy request

    Howe for the chop,literally....

It's a Mickey Mouse competition. With the budget available to the likes of West Ham, they shouldn't be in it, let alone celebrating winning it like it's some amazing triumph. Think they are the 15th richest club in world football (according to Deloite), some very talented players there, buy it's like giving a thoroughbred horse to a ploughman, he doesn't have the imagination to do anything else except to strap on a plough on the thoroughbreds back. They should have been ruthless last summer; bringing him back 18 months ago was bad enough, but keeping Moyes there just confirms their smalltime mentality, they are going nowhere.

Spurs have been very impressive here. One or two good additions in January and they should make top 4. Newcastle really struggling.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,564 ✭✭✭✭OwaynOTT

How was that not a red for Romero there?

thinking of the Jones red for Liverpool. Nowhere near as bad as this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,795 ✭✭✭✭tom1ie

    Bit harsh.

Moyes is in the top 20 elite managers in the premier league.

Outlook starting to look bleak for Howe now I'd say. Good riddance to him.

Only back from a three game ban as well. Was a great time to play Newcastle when they've CL to focus on midweek but Spurs gave done well here.

Chelsea are getting away with a lot this season because of the troubles at other clubs, Evertons points deduction, United being a shambles, City having a poor few weeks.

It's every bit as chaotic at Chelsea as it is at United, but who gets all the attention?

    Glazers Out!

The great thing about that absolute battering for Newcastle is it was dealt with by the commentators in the exact same way than if United went there and suffered the same fate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,471 ✭✭✭FintanMcluskey

United are also a money club, but they were winning regular trophies for 2 decades and have a far greater fan base than Chelsea, so will naturally endure more scrutiny.

The big difference is that Ten Haag has had a lot longer in the job, with Poch only arriving during the summer.

I think there was always an expectation it would take a wee while for Poch to settle things down at that mad house (he’s definitely doing a fairly piss poor job so far though), while the Man U expectation was for ETH to kick on after having a year to settle in.

Poch def deserves more criticism than he’s getting though. Would expect Nkunku to make a big difference - the gulf from Jackson and Broja to him is gigantic.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,978 ✭✭✭BenK

What does that mean exactly, 'United are also a money club'!? Every club is a money club. Most just spend what they can legitimately while others bend the rules to put a positive spin on it.

There are also vast differences between how United spent money over two decades and how Chelsea did it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,129 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

I didn't say "money club" I said "new money club".

Teams will come and go around them but whether it's good times or bad United and Liverpool are always in the conversation as "elite clubs".

Chelsea were a story when they were the hated sugar daddy club but that narrative has moved to other clubs and they are not challenging for trophies so no one really cares about them.

If you are a United or Liverpool fan or hater you might as well just accept this fact.

    Is Howe sacked yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,977 ✭✭✭doc_17

Newcastle have a lot of injuries. Howe has some wiggle room, but if he isn’t careful, he’ll be Jamal Jhasoggied.

How long before more teams try to emulate Villas extreme offside trap? PL average for teams catching opponents offside is 29, villas is 74 (stat showed up on sky midgame V Arsenal)

I mean, it's the way to go surely? No grey areas with offsides now, you either are or not with VAR, and Villa are reaping the rewards due to Villas transfers and Emery's style.

Interestingly they're also the 2nd best team for being caught offside, with 17. Liverpool & United being the worst with 40, Nunez the worst offender with 11 and Luis Diaz with 10. Big numbers for lads not always starting.

He’ll beheading for the transfer market in January 😃

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,117 ✭✭✭jacool

    Just a counter argument.

15th in the world they may well be, but there are 6 English clubs ahead of them, so following that logic 7th is their ceiling and that equates with the Conference competition.

I do agree with your squad analysis and no one has even mentioned Alvares, who I think was one of the buys of the summer. I wonder who they could get in to get them playing to their strengths?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,882 ✭✭✭✭klose

If Ange had his time back he'd definitely had redone his game plan that day, the injuries/suspensions they picked up from that game kinda threw their title challenge out the window.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,794 ✭✭✭Ottoman_1000

Liverpool defend exactly the same way, highline with the hope of catching people offside. Its an extremely risky way of playing, you need to have lightening quick defenders, along with a keeper who's comfortable dealing with 1 on 1 and sweeping off his line. Also you need a midfield who can dominate the ball, or press the opposition aggressively without it, otherwise you will get exposed.

I'm not so sure its easiest or even best idea for other teams to try and emulate. There's a many con's as there's pro's to the system!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,977 ✭✭✭doc_17

So that’s 3 away games in a row as well for Arsenal in the league? Luton, Villa, Liverpool? That doesn’t happen too often to teams. Something genuine for Arteta to complain about.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 52,229 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

Nah they have Brighton at home next weekend before the Liverpool game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,561 ✭✭✭✭CSF

Our most featured CB is quite slow. The Emery system is neither based on defensive pace nor is it particularly high risk.

Every defensive system has kinds of goals that are most common against it when executed poorly, and this is no different. This one will receive more scrutiny when those kinds of goals go in than others do, but that’s moreso down to ignorance than increased risk.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 10,798 Mod ✭✭✭✭artanevilla

They're not particularly hard to score against Villa, the revelation of Emery has been less about the defense and more about the attack.

Happy to see Everton are moving up the table and Dyche doing well. It was right they got the deduction but they could face much worse if they went down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,363 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

Dyche is, and always was, perfect for where Everton are at.

Solid foundations, gets the team running, a likeable team attitude, aggressive.

It wouldn’t shock me in the slightest if they were in the Europa places by next season.

The list of names you could put here is lengthy too. All the names I’ve spent years on here ranting about have become superstars under Emery.

It shows the effect of a top manager, its why I think this notion that the players are the problem and not the manager at United is a fallacy. I dont know what ETH has done to be given such blind faith and jaw dropping lowering in expectations.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,985 ✭✭✭ebbsy

    Question for you lot.

What if a goal had been scored or a player been sent off in the period between the penalty incident and the actual penalty being given in the Crystal Palace / Liverpool match.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,561 ✭✭✭✭CSF

The goal wouldn’t be given if Liverpool had scored. Would have been if Palace had scored. Not sure what would have happened if someone had committed a red card offence actually. That’s an interesting consideration.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,290 ✭✭✭✭rob316

    Ya good question.

When it happened I also said, they can stop a game and go back a few mins to give a penalty but they can't stop a game and award a goal which was incorrectly ruled out, in the Spurs/Liverpool game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,516 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

    It depends on the red-card.

If it was for violent conduct then it would stand as a red card.

If it was for something technical (deliberate handball, a niggly foul for second yellow etc) then it gets overturned when the game is reset to the penalty.
