Joskins is a Vantastic son, sons of Vantastic are notorious for breeding heifers/cows with poor milk, kept a couple of Milbrook Dartagnan heifers here once, they were a disaster for milk. Looking at Joskins breeding/figures you’d think he’d be one of the last bulls you’d keep heifers off, then again i’ve seen lads on Facebook etc saying his heifers have enough milk so who knows.

Had the first Gamin ZGM heifers calved here this year, not much udders on them but their calves did very well, they’re off milky Saler and Sim cross cows tho. Have a few more Gamin weanling heifers this year which i’ll keep on for cows

Having tried a lot of breeds nothing beats the Saler or Saler cross cow and Charolais bull on poor land imo. The fertility, longevity, hardiness, good milk and feet and calving ability of them is out in its own.

How du find the gamin for docility? I've a heifer with gamin breeding in her, her sire a gamin son had terrible feet. I wasn't going to bother bulling her I just presume she'll go lame fast enough. She's off a simm cow so it's a pity to kill her.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,308 ✭✭✭tanko

Docility wise i don’t find them any different to anything else around the place, i wouldn’t have the quietest cattle but when my vet is doing the TB test he reckons they’re quiet compared to a lot of cattle he deals with. The heifers were grand the day they calved anyway. I’ve been using Gamin for years but only started keeping heifers off him in recent years, they’re all young so haven’t noticed any feet problems yet anyway. He’s very easy calved and the muscle they have helps them sell well i find. I’d imagine you’d have a fair idea what her feet will be like at this stage, long toes etc.

The mother is a knell heifer with shorthorn blood in her so might be worth keeping maybe.

Have a few purebred Salers and Saler crosses here too...Rio/Ulsan/Ivan cows.I can't fault them either and all very quiet cows too.

Jesus these new ICBF figures are an absolute joke. Cerberus is after dropping €50. My best cow is a Cerberus x Sympa. €82 down to €35. Goes incalf to 1st straw every year. Her mother just left the farm a few weeks ago, just going on 15 years old. 13 calves with a calving interval of around 354 if I remember correctly. Feet never touched, proper fertile cow. Super breeder with 1 bull exported for breeding to the uk. Just checked her figures, been downgraded from €54 to €-9. Absolutely baffling. I’m in all the sucker schemes and have been. Filling out all accurate data. Actually doesn’t matter a feck.

They’re actually destroying the good cows of Ireland

Your last sentence says it all. Same happened dairy cows. Nothing but slips of things in most places now and them lads have forgotten what a decent cow looks like.

If you want to see how bad the changes are for LM bulls check out the revised catalogue for Athenry LM sale. Loads of bulls dropped below 4/5 stars which would have qualified on Monday. Feel sorry for breeders.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,138 ✭✭✭Sheep breeder

This is what icbf and the government want is good cattle gone out of the system and the suckler man growing trees or rewetting land to keep industry going, had a IDU ped char cow similar caving interval and rearing great calves, she had a set of twins and reared them and calved 10 days later the following year with a bull calf and was dropped from 3 star to a 1 star, rang up asked the question about the drop was told she calved later than previous year and her two calves were lighter at sale than her comrades, explained they were twins and for her to go back so quickly was a sign of good fertility, no the computer reckoned she wasn’t doing her job correctly, that was the end of stars for me. Have used Cerberus here and found him a good bull and reliability good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 747 ✭✭✭valtra2

Can anyone tell me if the bulls I have used for ai in the last few weeks that were 4/5star and now are 3 star. Will they be counted as 45 star or 3 star.

They're counted as 4/5 star if they are that when used. Issue is your replacement heifers off them will be lower than you were expecting

Was anyone in athenry for the limousin sale? Just wondering how'd it go.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,061 ✭✭✭✭patsy_mccabe

I caught the end of it online. If the auctioneer Chandler was anything to go by, it was a poorish sale.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,081 ✭✭✭DukeCaboom

I was thinking that but it's hard to know when your not there. Some really nice bulls sold for handy money I thought. I was wondering did the latest icbf thing upset the sale.

Saw on Facebook the Irish Salers Society has a similar post where they show the letter they sent with their issues. Hopefully this noise continues and doesn't go away until something is done

Here's all you need to know about the new values. Just look at the 4 Star value, the 60% percentile mark. Some of the breeds in descending order. So Dexters are the way to go. Oh Boy .......

    Breed-Percentiles-November-2023.pdf (icbf.com)

    Dexter - €126

    Simmental - €118

Limousine - €108 (spelled wrong, by the way 😎)

    Charolais - €82

Belgian Blue - €34 they got really hammered.

Was over in America during September and happened to go to a local fair that was on which had a cattle show. All the cattle looked similar and not for the good either. No tall cattle, all low to the ground with great depth in fairness but no width whatsoever. Irish cattle would eat them for size and width. I feel this is the way ICBF is going with cattle

Is anyone using sexed semen and how is it working out.

I've used 10 CWI sexed straws. Two Ivor and one Montesqieu straw. All on heifers.Have 5 CWI heifers and one Ivor heifer.About 50%conception.One of the Cwi heifers calved down an Ivor sexed straw a few weeks back

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,061 ✭✭✭✭patsy_mccabe

CWI a 2007 born bull, went from 5 Stars (98% Rel) to 3 Stars (99% Rel) in the space of 2 months. Says it all really.

He’s a decent bull, easy calved (put him on heifers) calves are good quality and the daughters make good cows

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,318 ✭✭✭893bet

What Lm bulls people using this year from Munster AI? I had been using LM2117 but he got downed in the last round.

Going to use LM4217 (which I have been for the last year or 2) and LM4351.

Anyone use LM4351? Seems a good alrounder, proven and easy calving.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,308 ✭✭✭tanko

IF the Limousin society and all the other breed societies had a pair of balls between them at the beginning of all this they wouldn’t be in the mess they’re in now, they blindly adopted the Eurostar system at the start without knowing what they were getting themselves into. The biggest culprits in all this are the IFA as usual, a pile of IFA lads sitting on the ICBF board fast asleep but farmers will keep throwing millions at them every year, you couldn’t make it up, has to be the best example of Stockholm Syndrome i’ve ever seen. I wonder how many pedigree breeders and commercial suckler farmers who are unhappy with their stars are IFA members. NCBC have been an embarrassment in all this also. It’s funny to see their new star bull Powerful Propers figures go through the floor.

There is good enough money in the current SCEP scheme because you only have to calve 50% of the cows you get paid on but this might be the last of these schemes worth joining. There are only 17000 farmers in SCEP. I have my doubts if the next scheme will be worth joining but sure that’s what they’re aiming for.

The minutes of the ICBF meetings where the decisions to make these changes were made should be published so that farmers can see who is fighting their corner and who isn’t, no danger of that happening of course. Why haven’t the IFA board members spoken publicly about what has gone on and why. Whatever credibility ICBF had is gone now, they’re just a bunch of well paid puppets for the anti farming nutters. ICBF are just fiddling the figures to suit the we have to get rid of Sucklers agenda, watching Sean Coughlan trying to defend the new figures was laughable stuff, it’s obvious he doesn’t believe a word of what he’s saying. Saying that farmers would be better to breed replacements off Dexter bulls rather than Charolais bulls is the last straw, they’ve lost the plot completely now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,308 ✭✭✭tanko

Maybe I’m wrong but LM 4351 isn’t a bull I’d use, his only use would be on heifers hoping for a replacement heifer, according to his figures he has a very long gestation if that can be believed, not a bull for cows anyway. NCBC don’t have much of a selection of Limousin bulls now, it’s fairly embarrassing for them to be buying a son of the Bova bull Loyal (Lisna Some Bull). Doveas selection of Limousin bulls is way better imo, Bova also.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,061 ✭✭✭✭patsy_mccabe

Bova still have Gamin (ZGM) by the way, for those interested. Only talked to them during the week.

Have one cow in calf to him but nothing yet. The AI guy had the straws so I said I'd try one anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,711 ✭✭✭148multi

Thanks ST, looking at the numbers, additional cost and conception rates would a man be as well use normal straws for suckler cows.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,308 ✭✭✭tanko

Have you used Montesquieu much, what do you think of him?

  • Registered Users Posts: 98 ✭✭SuperTeeJay

Only twice. On a Cwi heifer. She didn't hold to the sexed straw but held to the 2nd serve.same bull. She calved 2 weeks ago.Small, very lively bull calf.Good calf but seems to lack a bit of length.

  • Registered Users Posts: 98 ✭✭SuperTeeJay

It's frustrating when they don't hold but I have lovely CWI heifers from sexed straws calving down to Ivor heifers from sexed straws now.I should have good cows from these going forward which should more than compensate the cost of those repeats.Have only used on heifers.Im sure conceptions rates would be lower with cows.

Tried normal straws on others hoping for heifers and of course nearly all bull calves. I would use sexed again but have been told Insemination needs to be closer to 12 hrs rather than 18 -24 hrs to be successful.

    Yes,they were all Ai'd 12hrs after standing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,081 ✭✭✭DukeCaboom

Is it mad to try lisna some bull on heifers. I've a pair of big scopey saler heifers which will be calving at 30 months

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,308 ✭✭✭tanko

Are straws off him available yet? Looking at his breeding he shouldn’t be hard calving but better play it safe with heifers imo. I’d put Knottown Roy or Manclaux on them, a 3/4 bred Saler is a grand animal especially if you get a heifer, plenty of time for the Lim bull the second time and the Charolais after that.

You must have shares in Knotts town Roy ur always giving him a shout 😉, have u any heifers off him calved yet.Have one myself due in April a big range lady and quiet as a lamb

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,318 ✭✭✭893bet

But harsh on him I think. I wouldn’t put any major weighting personally on gestation.

I value docility, easy calving, daughter milk, and confirmation. Hard to get a bull that can tick all boxes but he looks a jack of all trades.

Two straws in last week anyway and 4 more ordered.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,081 ✭✭✭DukeCaboom

They're 2 roy heifers. I didn't bother bulling them in the spring and as the year went I regretted it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,225 ✭✭✭charolais0153

i wouldn’t be bothered using a new bull. Every year the same thing. The new expensive bull comes in. Not many of them take off Id b using something that u could keep a heifer off Sexed Ivor. Cwi. Maybe knell Etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,061 ✭✭✭✭patsy_mccabe

By the way, Excel (LM4027), Loyal (LM4184) and Gamin (ZGM) are all still available from Bova AI.

Yeah it’s gone up to 5% on cows now, if I used him i wouldn’t put him on heifers just a few older cows.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,308 ✭✭✭tanko

Sure isn’t it always the way, if you don’t put them in calf at 15 months they thrive and grow well piling on the weight and you regret not putting them in calf. If you put them in calf at fifteen months they stop growing straight away and you end up with a stunted wee yoke, then you regret putting them in calf. Calving them at 30 months is generally ideal but i only calve in Spring here so heifers calve at 34-36 months, only a small number of cows here might as well have something nice to look at.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,308 ✭✭✭tanko

No, afraid not, i just think he’s an ideal bull for heifers, breeds nice calves and they’re very quiet i find. I’ve got mostly bulls off him, got a few heifers but sold them to a neighbour, two of them have had calves and are nice animals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,061 ✭✭✭✭patsy_mccabe

I had a cow calf to ARDLEA RIGBY ET (LM8622) there earlier. Average to large size heifer calf. A new bull but breeding looks good, Kingbulll X Vantastic X Ramses.

Funny thing though is she was half out but the bag never burst, so her head was still in a full bag of fluid. I burst it straight away when I spotted it. Could she have been in trouble if I never intervened? Cow tends to have small calves normally and never had trouble calving.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,870 ✭✭✭Lime Tree Farm

Better to be sure than sorry. I have a scissors handy in the calving shed, that caul is a fairly tough membrane to break, as I've discovered in a panic.
