Old radiator with sludge

Had the gas boiler serviced recently, we had one radiator not heating up, service guy says sludge in radiator which I agree is correct, his solution is to replace the radiator, would this be the standard fix rather than flushing the whole system? don’t want the domino effect of having to replace rads one at a time if possible

rads are there since built, 1997

    thanks

you could remove the rad and wash it out yourself

garden hose turn upside down and a good shake and plenty water

Ok, just wondering why he didn’t suggest that rather than having to purchase a new radiator?

I had mine flushed and still had same issue. Radiators be 20+ years old . think its time to replace them.

It can sometimes be like dried mud and very difficult to shift. Always worth a go, especially if you have the correct equipment eg SDS drill. Sometimes the rad is too near to rusting to even bother.

Did he balance the system ? Did he take temperature or Thermo image of the rad ?

Cold rad doesn't immediately mean sludge. Unless your supply water is particularly dirty it's relatively hard to block and entire rad with sludge the flow of water keeps it clean.

It's more possible on a well supply with poor filters.

Cold rad could be unbalanced rad and unbalanced system.

To clean it isolate the rad both sides and remove from wall, bring outside turn on end run hose in one side and bang rad with a rubber mallet app over. Turn other end repeat with hose that side. Good 10 minutes and you'll know how clean it is.
