If anyone knows of large course developments that have taken place at Irish golf courses this year, I would be very grateful for the info.

    So:

    • Rebunkering programmes (eg Blainroe, Royal Dublin, Monkstown)
    • New holes (Coollattin, Druids Glen)
    • New tee boxes (Dromoland Castle)
    • New hole shaping (Galgorm Castle)
    • New practice facilities (e.g. Kilkeel, Limerick)
    • Clubhouse upgrades
    • New websites (Co Sligo)
    • etc.

Many thanks in advance. It's for an article I'm writing

Tralee are doing some work on 2 and 3. Not sure of the extent of it. Ballybunion have also started the upgrading/restructuring of the Cashen course guided by Tom Watson. 4 holes closed at the moment..Plan is to do it gradually over the next few years.

Greenore currently rebuilding a couple of its feature holes. The 6th green is pushed back by 10 yards, and all the wild flowers and trees have been cut away. The 7th has seen the long stretch of wasteland down the left hand side replaced by a full length water hazard (which connects directly into the water hazard at 6).

Naas began works on holes 13 - 18 in November, reprofiling bunkers, removing bunkers, new teeing areas, moving trees. All to be ready for play in Spring 2024. Works on the clubhouse will begin in January to upgrade dining and bar areas, and add an outside area with a retractable roof.

Portmarnock did a lot of work as well, not sure if it was 23 or 22 though. Pretty sure there's a thread here on it.

Yes significant change at pm links, I believe the work was carried out in 2023, with the new 17th hole still to be completed I believe. The current 17th is still in play for now. Always though the current 17th is a beaut of a par 3.

4 new greens coming on stream next May weather (permitting).

Don't forget investment in course machinery too Kevin -Tullamore GC are about to take delivery of 2 new machines costing I would imagine in excess of €100k. Future is bright.

Mullingar is updating #3 and #18.

    • #3 will get a full bunker refresh including re-shaping.
    • #18 is extensive:
      • Creation of a bunker complex to replace the current water feature.
      • Adding two new fairway bunkers to pressure long drives and lay-ups.

Great, that 18th water was so artificial (and scary!!)

It will be a much better finishing hole and have much lower maintenance cost (water + pump). Currently it doesn't look great at all.

The new fairway bunkers will catch more drives and layups. Overall the scoring/difficulty should be the same.

Any truth to the rumour that they took on these works when they heard the boards society was coming? They might get away with the course the way it was for their scratch cup, but we'd tear it apart.

Probably not of the scale you're interested in but St Margaret's put in all new teebox signage a few months ago.
