Looks like we are all out of favour this week. Nothing here either. Apart from yet another admin cockup by StateSavings/The Prize Bond Company/Fexco.

Very disappointed with having zero winnings since the new €75 prizes were introduced 3 months ago despite holding 100k in prize bonds!! I read Dutch bank Bunq are now offering instant access interest rates of 2.46% which equates to 1.65% (or €1650 for me) after DIRT deducted. That would equate to a €75 win every fortnight or thereabouts....much better than the nothingness I'm getting here.... I think its time for me to cash in my prize bonds.....

    Winnings on 16th December 2023: €0

    Last win 7th July 2023: €50

Total winnings on €25k from Feb 2011 to date: €3300

    2011: €75 x 4 = €300

    2012: €75 x 6 = €450

    2013: €50 x 12 = €600

    2014: €50 x 9 = €450

    2015: €50 x 5 = €250

    2016: €50 x 5 = €250

    2017: €50 x 4 = €200

    2018: €50 x 2 = €100

    2019: €50 x 6 = €300

    2020: €50 x 5 = €250

    2021: €50 x 1 = €50

    2022: €50 x 1 = €50

    2023: €50 x 1 = €50

I give up. I've never had a win on €6,000, and now the net interest each year would be equivalent to 2 prize bond wins.

    Hi all,

Anyone think they might introduce an app at any stage, the whole system seems archaic compared to online banking,i am considering moving all funds to prize bonds but i am worried about the lack of returns mentioned on very high holdings of 100k plus and do they really post winning notifications instead of email/text ,it seems very under resourced and inefficient and would be concerned about delays in cashing in if it was urgent after the initial 3 months.

    Thanks

  • Registered Users Posts: 626 ✭✭✭lordleitrim

You do get an email every time you get a prize if you set up and purchase then online but they also send a notification out in the post which seems like an unnecessary admin expense if you've opted to automatically reinvest any winnings. I've never cashed in any yet(that may change very soon per my post above!) but I believe its quite efficient from other posters when you request cash in online.

A Prize Bond APP is probably in the future. They say that they 'will continue to implement digital solutions', the question is when.

If you have registered for a State Savings Online account you should not have problems cashing in your bonds at short notice after the minimum 90 day holding period. There is a good post at #9028 above from @Hibernicis explaining the process if you need to register.

I just noticed this when I checked the site at lunchtime. I wonder who it was that screwed up their planned day off on the 22nd. They really are a hopeless shower of clowns.

Presumably the big prize will be the 29th ? Was there a deadline for purchases to be entered in that mentioned previously (the 17th I thought) or am I imagining it ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,066 ✭✭✭tuisginideach

Yes - as usual I bought Prize Bonds for my godchildren and I'm pretty sure the 17th was given as the cut-off date.

While I have no objection to the idea of an App, the State Savings Online website's mobile implementation is a decent interface and works well. It is the functionality and stability of the overall proposition that needs to be addressed as a priority. An app will bring no benefit if all it does is to replicate the functionality available on the current State Savings Online existing website so I would suggest that any expenditure would be much better directed towards the following essential improvements, most of which are at the back-end:

    • Improve website stability and up-time, implement automated "site down" monitoring, put resources in place to recover website when it fails out of hours.
    • Replicate all functionality currently available for "Sole" clients for "Joint" clients
    • Implement reinvestment for Cash-in of all products
    • Make State Savings Deposit Accounts available online
    • Allow more than one portfolio to be associated with a single mobile number for TFA
    • Show realtime order progress/status
    • Allow secure document upload

An App incorporating all of this can follow on later.

The other badly needed improvements are consistent procedures and processes and trained staff. And of course real world interest rates.

  • Registered Users Posts: 687 ✭✭✭POBox19

@Hibernicis Most would be happy to see 'real world interest rates' sooner over an app.

  • Registered Users Posts: 700 ✭✭✭jrmb

I was getting a letter on textured paper in the post every month to acknowledge my direct debit to Prize Bonds. There's no way that's more cost effective than an app, which would practically be their existing website repackaged.

Some customers may be encountering issues with purchasing online or over the phone, viewing the Prize Bond draw results and accessing the Prize Bond tracker service. We are working to resolve this as soon as possible. If you need assistance or have any queries you can contact us at 0818 20 50 60 / 01 705 7200. Thank you for your patience and we apologise for any inconvenience.

This on the site at 18:52, happened some time after 16:00 19th. Site went down completely at 18:55 but back at 18:58. I can't use See Draw Results.

When they notify you of a win do they tell you the number of the bond that won the prize?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,547 ✭✭✭Hibernicis

@carrickbawn If you are registered for State Savings Online ( and you’d be mad not to be) it works like this:

Shortly after the draw takes place you get an email notifying you that you’ve won. The email tells you nothing more than this.

You log on to your online account and there you can see (1) immediately the winning number and the amount of the prize and (2) if you are set-up to reinvest your winnings a few hours later you will see the new bond numbers issued to you listed as part of your holdings. And a few days later the paper certificate for the new bonds will arrive in the post.

Thank you. Im sure you know that am a regular poster on this page, but a friend contacted me today to say that they had won a prize but didn't even know that there was prize bonds in their name and was wondering when this bond was bought. It was obviously a gift but if they had an indication of the winning number they might be able to get an idea of when it was bought.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,547 ✭✭✭Hibernicis

    @carrickbawn

That was a nice surprise !!

They could try phoning the Prize Bond Company with whatever details they have of the win and asking about the winning bond; they might strike lucky and get a useful answer from a helpful staff member or more likely not.

There are two official ways that I know of in which they can find out what State Savings products (incl PB) are registered in their name:

Option 1 complete this form, making sure that they tick all three boxes in section 2. State savings will then conduct a search.

Option 2. Register for State Savings Online. A similar search is conducted as part of the registration process.

In both cases, bear the following in mind: The results of the search will very much depend on the information you supply, so make sure you list all forms of their name that could have been used ( e.g. james murphy, jimmy murphy, jas murphy, j. murphy, j.j. murphy, seamus murphy, seamus o’murchu, etc) and also all possible addresses (e.g. all houses they lived in from 1957 onwards including their parents address, and any variations of the address, e.g. house name as opposed to house name, townland name, etc). That’s from a post which I wrote in this thread which might be worth your friend’s time reading

Please note if premium Bonds have been purchased for persons Under 18 they will not be able to register online with state savings. The only way you will know if persons Under 18 have won is to wait until they get notification in the Post.
