The most you ever paid in a private sale

I am currently looking at an Audi in private sale.

Its 30k+ euro but low mileage. I bought the Motorcheck report and all looks good. There is only a few months left of the Audi second hand warranty though which is one thing putting me off.

Just wondering what's the most people would be willing to part with on a private sale?

How much you’re paying is irrelevant really. The more important question is how much are you saving compared to buying from a dealer? If you’re saving lets say €5,000 as well getting a warranty with the car then I’d consider it a very good deal if everything else checks out.

For what its worth I’ve bought cars for €20k+ from auction which is way riskier than buying from a private seller and getting an Audi warranty.

I think auction safer you have alot if protection just not for mechanical things

Its actually one grand more than the same car I drove in a dealership a few weeks ago. But It has half the mileage, better engine (2.0) and has a sunroof.

30k with no comeback wouldnt be for me, had been looking at Audi's similar myself an prices are gradually coming down.

Hold out and you'll find one in a dealer with low milage thats nicely priced and snap it up, likes of spirit skoda or ALD carmarket usually have nice stock at lower than Audi Dealers.

If gearbox falls out the thing after a week your up to 5k down possibly straight away.

How does it compare price wise to something in a dealers with similar spec and mileage?

No the saving would have to be very significant and at the higher end I’d still be very cautious: tbh I’d probably rather pay the bit extra and get a better dealer warranty. Premium makes especially are notorious for huge unforeseen bills even on well minded and serviced ones. Petrol would be btw et as less to go wrong.

Id do more shopping around if I was you. I also think prices are faltering a bit too- anecdotally I’m seeing much more “sales” and reduced prices in dealers advertised

No issue spending that amount privately once you've checked the vehicle out thoroughly and transfer funds in bank or bank draft etc

I spent 6k on a car once in a private sale, got it about 10km from the place I bought it and the engine stalled and was a full rework. great fun.

Only advice I could add, get it down to at least 2 mechanics prior to the sale and have them do a checkover. I saw two as they will always find something different. it might be 100 a pop but worth it

What's the service history like? Are they the kind of owner that maintains well regardless of cost? Something I often look at for an indication of an owners attitude to their car is the tyres. If they have a valuable car but put the cheapest Chinese tyres on they could find, then what's the likelihood of the rest of the car being maintained with a similar mindset.

A couple of years ago I looked at a nice 2017 Audi coupe in an Audi main dealer. They had put 4 new tyres on it, the cheapest black rubber they could find. Front and back were different makes too. Car was up for nearly €30k too. I walked away.

I recently bought a BMW from Japan instead, full set of Pirelli P7 on it. The car itself before any fees etc was around €3500

Car was originally bought in London. Lad selling it bought it from Audi dealership in Athlone last Feb/March. Tyres are 8 months old. Hard to see what they are from the pics. Its 2.0 petrol Quattro too btw.

Why is he selling it on so soon?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 247 ✭✭coil1985

I didn't ask tbh. The Audi warranty coming to an end might be one reason.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,439 ✭✭✭Wailin

He's asking far too much if its a grand more than a similar year car from a dealer, regardless of spec, mileage etc.

Black and round is the salesmans favourite saying across the country when it comes to tyres they have to fit

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,657 ✭✭✭✭road_high

That’s my point too- saving needs to be substantial to make it worth the possible risk

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,702 ✭✭✭goochy

Is there finance on it ?

what do you think op? To me the car sounds overpriced and in a few days it’ll be worth a few thousand less potentially. Car buying is a bit like dating- you need to have an abundance mentality rather than getting fixated on one you think might be perfect! (Not saying that is the case with you, but shop around). I think the screw is turning and it’s more a buyers market again

My biggest question would be why he’s selling after only eight months.

I’d be asking the question and make a judgement on the answer given.

Good mechanical check by someone who knows what they’re doing as well.

    Found the ad.

The tyres are continental sport comfort 5. You can make it out by zooming in to the front passenger tyre on pic 2.

I'd be slow spending over 30k privately with a guy who does not put his real name on the ad and has a done deal history of 18 ads. What were the other 18 ads, I dont know - it's just something that doesn't sit well with me. This is probably just a personal thing to me that others may well disagree with..

It's pretty naive of you not to be asking the seller why he is selling it so soon. That would be the first question I'd have.

For something like this you have to use your own judgement of the person.

If I was selling a car that valuable I would be very accommodating to the buyer. Would have a reasonable discussion about how the money should be transferred and come to a decision together as to how to proceed and anything they wanted re picture of my passport with certain details blocked etc I would happily give them if it offered them more comfort.

Any time I sell a bike I ask for the cash before a test and then to give me their passport and driving licence to hold on to while they test, anyone who is genuine won't mind.

    There's the ad: https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/audi-a5-quattro-2018-tfsi-254bhp-s-line/35601160

I'd be inclined to agree that it's quite high especially with the Audi warranty running out in Feb/March

I see another a5 is coming to market (no pics yet) from Audi dealership at 34,000 euro. That has more mileage but at least would have the full year warranty.

In fairness to that seller, he gave me his name and location in private message but ye a drawback of Done Deal is you can't view that previous items he sold or any reviews.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,710 ✭✭✭User1998

Its a low mileage car with Audi warranty, minimal risk in my opinion. These cars are hard to sell privately. I guarantee you could get it for around €30,000 if you negotiate hard.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14 agent_88

Selling cars privately is tough, not many will have the cash to buy this up front. I'd have a look at the back catalogue on Merlin car auctions - i think you've to pay €10 for it but it'll give you a good idea of what the true value is.

€24000 11 years ago, price must be right, cars are so technical now, a fault could hurt a lot and a years warranty can be very valuable, some private sellers live in dreamland.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,808 ✭✭✭maddness

I wouldn’t have an issue with keeping the car 8 months, I change cars a few times every year. Variety etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,808 ✭✭✭maddness

Agree with all of the above. I have bought and sold plenty of cars and the majority of the time you can tell straight away if the person is genuine or not. Look for the service history, only meet them at their house, get a copy of passport and licence and even search for them on LinkedIn.

I’m not sure what difference that makes, there is no guarantee of a truthful answer to your question.

That’s where a judgment call needs to be made.

If the answer doesn’t sound convincing I’d walk away.

The mileage seems excessively low for a 5 year old car. Have you run a check on the previous UK registration number?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,605 ✭✭✭cpoh1

Ive sold dozens of cars privately ovwer the years and if a buyer asked me for a copy of my drivers licence and passport id tell them where to go.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,007 ✭✭✭✭callaway92

Why aren't any of his previous ads accessible? Is that standard on DoneDeal?

Donedeal account has been active since 2013, and only 18 adds posted since then. So thats around 1.2 adds per year.

No wonder its hard to sell privately if people view something so insignificant as a red flag.

Ye seems majority of miles were done in the UK.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,657 ✭✭✭✭road_high

I think the car looks ok it’s the price that’s the sticking point.

Would agree with this, hes selling it privately as the trade in offer was thousands less.

I traded in a car a few weeks ago with some very annoying intermittent electrical faults, similar were for sale for 23k but I was offered 16250 trade in off something else and took it as I wanted rid, if someone like you came along and bought it privately off me without issues known you'd be pulling your hair out with a lemon, thread carefully.
