  • I found this Ultra runner recently. Shes a mother of two and in her 40's and shes training as well as she has ever trained in her life. She started pro running later in life. I usually fast forward her podcasts about 10 mins as she usually advertises at the start and if she has a guest they usually stroke each others egos for a while. She does have some good tips though and she is motivating.

I think some races have crazy entry costs, there was a 5&10k on in Dublin city in November which was over €40, hard to justify €40 for a 5k when parkruns are free, even with a medal & shirt.

Is that the Run in the Dark you are talking about? I done it and even if it was half the price it was pretty rubbish. There was way too many people so it was really congested for big chunks of the race. The 10k race was just 2 loops of the 5k route so you ended up running in to crowds of 5k walkers at points. I heard from friends who watched it that this was really noticeable for the really fast 10k runners.

I only started doing races this year and while I love the atmosphere and craic of a race, I don't think I will bother doing them apart from halfs and marathons. They are just poor value and way too congested.

No, it was a race organised by the Inner City Run Club.

I havent done the run in the dark since 2019 and wouldnt do it again for those reason, the course is too tight for the numbers you get and then you hit the 5k walkers who are chatting and walking 5-6 abreast.

Its a good cause but definitely not a race to set any expectations for.

Ciara Mageean just gave an interview on Newstalks Off The Ball. It was worth hearing her talk about mental side of training and racing..She really does set very high standards for herself (and delivers)

One thing I don’t like about Ben is running is when he’s reviewing shoes is he giving an unbiased opinion as more than likely he’s get them free so does he cut off the hand that feeds him by giving an opinion on them. I don’t watch all his videos but in his best shoes of the year he had the Nike invincible 3 and said they were improvement on the 2 when the vast majority of people believe Nike have taken great shoe and made it bad where people don’t like it.

Another trend I have noticed. "Early bird" prices. but the early bird is the same as the normal price was last year. And instead they up the price then to say all "early bird" prices are gone. I am having to commit to races in April and May in December in case the price increases. Its madness

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,700 ✭✭✭rovers_runner

Raheny have a price increase for this January coming, but have a decent offering for finishers(new drinks cup).

Finding a large number of events at same prices as other years, but now with an "option" to get a t-shirt for a sizable enough fee(seeing as they covered them on recent years). It will reach a tipping point like around 2010.

I'm happy to get back to just paying to run and having the bib and the memories. The extras are just money spinning at the end of the day.

Costs go up folks, you're not being gouged.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,073 ✭✭✭✭event

Yeah at this stage I have no interest in tshirts so quite happy if they give that option

Oh absolutely. I dont mine race prices going up really, that happens. But its them going up 3 months in advance of a race and calling it "late entry" that annoys me.

I am running a half marathon shortly in Donadea, what is the surface like? Are road shoes ok or should I use trail shoes?

  • Registered Users Posts: 605 ✭✭✭Slow_Runner

Road shoes are fine, the route in Donadea is path the whole way around, if the weather stays as it is it will be mucky but the surface is fine. The half is 4 laps of a 5k loop plus a bit at the start.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,780 ✭✭✭Nuttzz

    Thanks for that!

Honestly no, but with the caveat that I'm a dog owner. Much like a parkrun, as a runner I don't have exclusive rights to the path or track I'm running on. Every run should have at least one dog pet, particularly when it's a puppy.

  • This is really funny but I just got sent this article about half an hour ago about this fella and then I open Boards and see this lol.

    I know him :)

Hes a pretty good fighter, did martial arts in Thailand as well.

His mother is a lovely woman and he was well raised.

But not sure what happened him over the past few years as I lost touch with his family. Its a shame to end up inside.

I hope he doesnt end up on drugs or worse after that spell.

Obviously I'm not justifying what happened.

On a separate note, I remember jogging along Drumcondra where the path is split with the cycling lane.

Its a pretty wide path and this woman was coming towards me power walking.

We made eye contact. I made sure I was jogging to the left side beside the bike path as she was on the right close to the houses.

She then decided to walk towards the path on my side after we made eye contact and she saw me steering as left as I could to avoid her.

She thought I would move into the cycling lane so she could take up the entire path.

I raised my fist to my shoulder just as I reaslised what she was going to do.

She shouldered me while passing but instead of getting my nice soft shoulder and pushing me into the cycling lane she got the knuckles of my fist into her shoulder.

She was disgusted and I said to her that I wasnt going to get hit by a passing bike just so she could take up the entire walkway.

I was watching out for a car for the entire run, thinking she might go home and get her husband and come after me.

But the move was totally an aggressive and dominance kind of stunt on her behalf and I wasnt in the humour for it.

It's mad how something could get so out of hand. I do sometimes grumble to myself about pedestrians and dog owners that have no control but a confrontation is never an option. Usually just step out of the way and jog in.

I've had similar experiences, can be very annoying when it's a blatant aggressive move on the other person's behalf. Unfortunately some people are not very nice.

Tolka Estuary Greenway is developing well. It is not finished yet but you can get into it along the sea in East Point or below the Circle K garage in the docks:

This RTE bit might interest some of the locals

Basically its from research carried out at DCU which incorporated over 150 hours of data analysis leading to the creation of the Running Injury Continuum(nice name). This model identifies nine levels of injury, from minor niggles to severe issues, highlighting the physical, psychological, and social effects of injuries on runners. On first reading it seems the basically assess the importance of recognizing and managing early signs of injury, like niggles, to prevent more serious problems, probably obvious to most around here but interesting non the less

Really great! Interesting how an "easy run" could mean a huge pace range for one person.

Sprint: The World’s Fastest Humans from Netflix arrives on July 2.

Throw in a few explosions and this would feel like it's been produced by Michael Bay. But seriously, the speed...
