Problem selling nearly new MG4

I got an MG4 in July after ordering in January, was looking forward to getting it, keeping an eye on all the discussions of bugs and updates etc, long story short, its a pig of a car. Seating isn't comfortable for long drives, software is buggy and its just not a great car imo....so I've been looking at a new Tesla M3, ready to put an order in, their trade in price is...well lets just say I haven't had such a good laugh in a long time!

Went back to Linders to see if they fancied making me an offer, nope, they've too many coming back after pcp, tried Frank Keane with their "we buy cars for cash" nope, they dont want it...so I'm currently sitting on a car that could be sold for 35k...which I cant shift....any advice?

Bad timing. MG reduced their prices too recently or at least had an offer on that would have hit second hand prices.

I had zero interest in my cupra born when I was mooching around a few dealers a few months ago. It's a 2022.

Some.people got prices in around 23k for cars that cost them 40+ a year previous

Just out of interests what is the 35k figure you are referring to? What a dealer could sell it for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 996 ✭✭✭Ozark707

What sort of price reduction did they bring to the market? I heard VW reduced the prices of the ID4 (at least). This is sure to have a big knock on effect on trade in prices

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 41,559 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

Towards the end of the year they had a €2k or €3k (from memory) offer on them.

They are currently offering €2500 of the price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,419 ✭✭✭joe1303l

Clean it properly yourself or get it valeted, take some good photos and put it on DoneDeal at at €7K less than the current new price for one. Be prepared to drop more in the coming weeks to get rid of it. Think up some plausible reason as to why you’re sellers it so quickly while you’re waiting for the phone to ring…..

I always advise people this that are not into cars or cleaning them etc

Get it to a local detailer. They will always have a winter or summer prep offer. Once clean, get the photos taken in their wash bay or unit. Indoors and under light.

Makes for great photos and will cost you €50’ish.

But you’ll get multiples of that back if it sells privately.

    Example - http://flawless.ie/services/standard-services/flawless-safe-wash/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,365 ✭✭✭User1998

Heres a 2023 from a dealer for €27k, so you might get €22k for it privately.

That one is an Excite model, maybe add another €4k or so for an Exclusive model.

    https://www.donedeal.ie/view/35873846

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69 ✭✭Brian_dub_

There’s some on carzone for 35k, mine is the exclusive long range with the 65kwh battery.

Tesla offered €17k which is insanely low imo. It only has 5,600km on it so is essentially an ex demo for mileage. I’d be looking to get at least 28-30k from it if there are some up for 35k in dealers.

is it really plausible to sell privately through donedeal for a 30k asking price? Who is likely to have that cash kicking around for a private sale. Surely people will go to a dealer for a car at that price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 72,148 ✭✭✭✭L1011

People buy high value cars privately all the time - plenty of car loans pay out to bank accounts rather than insisting on going as a draught.

If there's some on carzone for 35k but you're being offered 17k; it suggests the ones on carzone are never going to sell for that. You will need to go lower to sell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69 ✭✭Brian_dub_

Tesla are notorious for their very low trade in prices, they just want to shift them to trade as quick as possible and turn a profit on them, but 17k seems very low. Seems like there’s going to be an influx of them seeing as Linders are saying they have plenty coming back in off pcp deals.

I’ve bought and sold more expensive privately. It’s not about having the money sitting there. Personal loans, credit Union loans etc can all be used to buy privately.

    Revolut loans, Avantcard loans etc

Private buyers have lots of choice.

You are trapped, best option is to keep the car and live with its deficiencies.

Or, lose a lot of hard earned trading it,,,

Or, offer it to somebody here at €2k over trade in and suck it up.

Very hard to get what you want at your door, people either don’t have it ir are very wary

tough lesson, I’m sorry you are going through this.

MG4 isn't out 3 years is it? I suspect they're telling porky pies about loads coming off PCP...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69 ✭✭Brian_dub_

It’s a bit of a pain alright. Last 2 cars I had I traded in at 3 years old and 2 1/2 years old and got great trade in prices, first was a Megane GT and last car I traded in for the MG was a Leon hybrid, 211 plate and they gave me 25k for it.

guess there’s just a lot of MG4’s out there at the moment and the prices are going down across the board. I imagine it’ll be the same in 2 years time with all the model 3’s being traded in.

I’ll probably end up waiting 6 months then ordering a model 3, take what I can for the MG, due a pay increase and bonus in 6 months so it might help soften the blow

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 377 ✭✭pale rider

Advertise it so, be €3k less than the cheapest and wait for a phone call, it could take a while but you only want one serious call to convert into a sale.

    Get rid of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,413 ✭✭✭John arse

Sorry for your trouble pal, funny enough (as you probably know) the MG4 forum on here says mostly that they're the dogs bollix - Strange. Personally i’d try and live with it for another while and see what's around next year.Good luck👍.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,827 ✭✭✭✭road_high

Not driven a new Leon but believe they’re very well rated so probably feels a downgrade to one of these. They’re smaller and more supermini class

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69 ✭✭Brian_dub_

Like it’s a grand car, it’s just got its quirks and some of them have annoyed me.

the aircon reads 5°c lower than what it’s set at. So to get 22°c you need to set it to 27.

the lane keep assist has tried to kill me at least 3 times.

the windows fog up when it’s cold out unless the demist setting is being used

you can’t pre warm the car when it’s plugged in and not charging I.e. in the morning when it’s the exact time you’d want it.

all in all it’s a good enough car, just all those little quality of life things that add up to make me not like it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69 ✭✭Brian_dub_

The Leon was a great car, I wish they did a full EV of it like the Astra EV. The trim level I had was the Fr plus, which they dropped in favour of the Fr trim level which lacked a few things. But the software was great, I especially liked the speed sign recognition for the cruise control, it used the gps and camera and would set the speed according to the sign, or the known speed from the gps location.

True! You can put up with it, it does the job…but there’s always a nicer and newer model out there…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,419 ✭✭✭joe1303l

You’ll sell it no bother once you price it correctly on DD. Ignore the Tesla offer, it’s just low ball crap to make you sell it yourself. Another option might be to try a trader like Graham Walker cars. He usually stocks some nice fresh Teslas and might take your car as a trade in. Life is too short to keep it if you don’t like it. Test drive a Model 3 also if you haven’t already as you don’t want to make the same mistake twice. Best of luck with sorting it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69 ✭✭Brian_dub_

Haven’t heard of Graham walker cars, will give it a look.

I test drove the model 3 before Xmas, they only had a showroom left hand drive refresh model, but the build quality and updates have certainly come a long long way in the last 3 years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,413 ✭✭✭John arse

You know about the new model 3 highland I take it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69 ✭✭Brian_dub_

Yeah that’s what I’d be ordering. They stopped taking orders on the legacy version in late October it looks like, if you ordered around then it was changed to a highland model.

the updates in it are lovely, and the lack of indicator stalks didn’t seem to be an issue, it’ll just be a learning curve I’d say.

50k if you add the nice new grey paint and enhanced autopilot.

the software seems very smooth and responsive, cameras are all very high def and look great on the screen, nav system seems pretty good.

now if only there was a decent charging infrastructure including superchargers…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,167 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

It's hard to shift an EV right now, not just MG. I shopped my ZS around after 6 months and again at the 1 year mark. Usual Tesla silly numbers. But they don't even want used Teslas now either. Only one that gave me decent money was MG.

    For the annoyances.

You can turn down the Lane keep assist. Stick it on medium or low. It will then just gently guide you off the lines if you cross over them unintentionally instead of throwing you into incoming traffic 😂

The windows need a good clean inside with window cleaner spray. That helps. It's common enough on new cars.

You can turn on the heating and set the Aircon temp from the app. The car just needs to be locked, and you can lock it from the app too if you left it open. App got an update recently too and can do much more.

I'll usually hit the demister as I'm finishing up my coffee in the morning and then when I sit in it is nice and cosy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69 ✭✭Brian_dub_

its gonna be tough to shift MG’s I think, there’s gonna be a serious amount of them over the next year or 2.

I’ve given the windows a good clean a few times already. I still can’t set the air con/heating from the app when the car is plugged in but not charging, even with the updated app.

Yup that was me that got a price of 23.5k on a 15 month old born with only 10km done ,cost over 41k bad timing indeed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69 ✭✭Brian_dub_

Ouch…looks like I’ll be taking an inevitable hit…will probably wait 6 months at this stage, pay off some more of the finance and hopefully get a bit of a bonus in work to put onto the deposit.

wonder is pcp with a Tesla a good idea, I’d struggle to keep to the 20k km over the 3 years, but at least there’s a guaranteed trade in price at the end…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 106 ✭✭gammon199

    What's priced correctly though? 20k?

If dealers are offering 23k for much nicer 222 plates 77kWh Cupra Bjorns and VW are having a firesale with all the ID range so that they may survive.

Why would Graham Walker take it? He will also know the music is about to stop, and he's not going to be left holding the bag

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 41,559 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

Any M3 ordered since late last year is the highland. The LHD car the OP referenced is the highland model.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 106 ✭✭gammon199

Tesla have very high interest rates and terrible GMFV on pcp's

Teslas only make sense if you can buy for cash, they get bank loans off AIB.

If your doing finance you go to VW and the autogiants.

My advice would be to go to VW, they will give you an ID range car like an ID4 for 40k or so, 0% finance and a good GMFV on a pcp and in 3 years time the market will be more settled.

VW won't want your MG though, they'll offer what its worth.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,365 ✭✭✭User1998

There are Exclusive Long Range models from dealers for €34k before discounts

There is an Exclusive Long Range from a private seller for €33k before discounts, which has been for sale for 45 days and will not sell at that price.

If you want any chance of selling it you need to be advertising it at €30k or below, and be prepared to negotiate another couple of grand off the price.

And even then, all it takes is a couple of dealers to reduce their asking prices and all of a sudden your car is over priced

    Correct.

First ones only landed in Ireland and got to dealers this time last year, and went out to customers in January. The only 222 ones are ex-demo cars. Even then, there were only a few shiploads in the first half of 2023, the vast majority sold last year were from June onwards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,832 ✭✭✭✭JPA

The LKA is a problem, just turn it off.

Of course the windows fog up when it's cold, that's just driving in Ireland.

All the issues could be fixed with software.

Most people getting an MG4 do so because of the value, and cannot or will not pay more.

If you had the choice between an MG4 or a M3 in the first place why did you go MG?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,134 ✭✭✭crl84

Have you had it booked in and got all the latest updates for it?

There was an update for LKA that made it less sensitive. It still comes on by default as that's a EuroNCAP requirement for 5-star rating for new car models submitted for testing since mid-2022. You can set the Welcome greeting when you start the car to say "Turn off Lane Keep" or something to remind you. I programed the left star button on the steering wheel to go straight to MG Pilot too. Complain about it to the dealer and see if they'll update it.

The latest software version for the Excite actually has the ability to turn LKA off on a single icon, when you pull down the homescreen, see images in this thread: https://www.mgevs.com/threads/the-mg4-se-1100r33-infotainment-thread.14571/

I wouldn't be surprised if the next software version for the Exclusive has this ability too. Clearly it's someething MG have been getting feedback on if they've added it to the Excite software....

Pre-warm when plugged in and not charging has been fixed in a recent module software update, I saw people mentioning it on the mgevs forum.

I think I saw someone mention the aircon reading being adjusted in the most sotware update too, but can't be sure as I just always have it around 25-28 when it's cold.

The most recent Infotainment software update version for Exclusive is R46. Check on the head unit in the settings/about section, the last 3 digits of the Entertainment software version number. If it's not, complain to the dealer about Bluetooth unpairing, radio stations forgetting the favourites, along with the LKA sensitivity and pre-heating not available while plugged in but not charging,, and they should book it in for updates. Just make sure they actually update to R46 when they do it (note that is just the Infotainment version, LKA updates and other updates can be done without the Infotainment number changing). If you still have UK road sign speeds showing by default, compain about that too as that is solved with an update.

It seems that unless you specifically list issues for the dealer to fix, they can't/won't do all required updates, as they get paid by MG to do whatever needs to be done, and anything else is at their discretion and are essentially doing it for free on their own time....

Linders and FK Dublin seem to be kind of hopeless at updating to the latest versions, unless you specifically list your issues. They just hook the car up and check for updates on some central MG server, and then assume everything is up to date, even when it's not. Sheils Limerick seem more competent, with their service centre doing Infotainment updates via USB key, see this person's account for instance: https://www.mgevs.com/threads/mg4-software-update-thread.7699/post-250069

If your aircon screen is still the one below, then it's not on the latest infotainment version (new one is a lot more basic looking, but arguably less fiddly and easier to use)

Prices are coming down. Just picked up a 2023 Cupra born 58kwh with 6.5k on it just before Christmas for €27k.

Owner said he persuaded the wife to go for a Tesla so thats why they were selling.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,167 ✭✭✭Grumpypants

I took out my ZS to test the lane keep assist just to make sure I wasn't dreaming and it's perfect. Beeps up to the line and then the turn in is gentle. I do remember it being a OTT at the start but recent updates have fixed lots of the initial issues.

You are not alone. Looks like this one for sale quite a long time. Just contact seller and find for yourself is there any interest and what was the highest offer. About a year ago Unkel was promoting MGs, now BYD. After a test driving MG in Feb 2023 I did buy 4 years old low mileage Kona as it was a better value to me.

Can't imagine there's much interest at that price when 3k more will get you a brand new one from a dealer....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 183 ✭✭Basilio

    Another one

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,201 ✭✭✭zg3409

OP, buying any brand new car then trading it in shortly after is always an expensive game. Sounds like you now want to buy another brand new car so again you are buying a very high depreciating asset at the worst time for depreciation (the first minute you walk out of the showroom).

You can sell cars on done deal but should be clean, good ad, ideally located in Dublin and available to view 24/7. If you don't want the hassle as suggested get it professionally cleaned. A friend or relation may put up.the ad on done deal for you and deal with all the calls and messages. Throw them 2 or 3 thousand if you don't want the hassle.

Think twice before buying a brand new car. Normal depreciation is 20% in year one, 10% all following years but in today's market it's likely deprecation may be even higher with a car market crash likely in the next couple of years, lots of supply, high prices, crazy high interest rates. You could easily lose 10k euro in 6 months if you buy new then sell straight away.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69 ✭✭Brian_dub_

    Thanks for the detailed info.

I had it into Linders 2 months after getting the car. Told them LKA was very strong, listed the other issues, they tried to say that it was all normal and that they need to open a ticket with mg in the U.K. for each issue, then they tell them if they can fix it or not. They also tell them to download the infotainment updates each time to the shop laptop which can take hours instead of just keeping them on usb’s. I wanted the latest infotainment update, they said Ireland and uk are on different numbers, just really got the feeling they didn’t want to bother doing anything.

going to book it in for new year, tell them everything that’s wrong, tell them to update all the modules and to put the latest infotainment update on and just not take back the keys until they do it! They just seem like they have far too many cars to pdi/update and aren’t bothered with taking customers back to have stuff fixed.

as a side note, got an email back offering 23,500-25,000 from autobuy. Ideally I want 30k, but I’d take 28…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 550 ✭✭✭chrisd2019

Valuation of cars in the preowned market has change a lot since the covid induced scarcity. As others have said the prices asked for other cars of your model are not realistic also. If you really want to sell it you need to drop your price expectation, and shift it before others also discover the issues that have lead you to sell it on.

Done Deal is used for high value vehicles also, once trust is gained between buyer and seller.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,353 ✭✭✭MightyMunster

Wouldn't recommend the Enhanced autopilot, save your money! Can always add it on later on with the click of a button.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 191 ✭✭naughtyboy

There is a big car dealer with showrooms across munster who won't touch any second hand Electric Vehicles

The reason is they have serious problems with the batteries and they do not want to offer any warranty.

But they won't tell that to the public as they are also.trying to sell new Electric Vehicles

I know a chap who knows ford Electric Vans they can't give them away due to the resale value coming down the road in 3 to 5 years. Replacement batteries are just too expensive to make EVs anything but a waste of money

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,175 ✭✭✭✭listermint

    Shovel load of nonsense there.

    To put it mildly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,353 ✭✭✭MightyMunster

Doesn't make much sense as there aren't that many EVs outside of manufacturers battery warranty so wouldn't affect the dealer. Dealers don't generally sell older cars that are out of warranty of any drive train.
