Weather set fair for the remainder of the test in Melbourne… going to be an interesting and intriguing first session….at 187/3 the Aussies are slightly ahead…. They can probably lose 2 wickets in the morning and they’ll still be in the box seat 275/5 or thereabouts at lunch and they might end up with a 400+ score on the board…

Indian tail slightly wagging but looking like a seriously under par first innings total vs SA…..

Only catching bits of this match but Pakistan did well to restrict Australia to 318 but rather typically have struggled with the bat, 193/6 with little or nothing from their middle and lower order.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Tasty game at Centurion. South Africa five down have a small lead, hundred for Elgar who is still there and few decent contributions from their debutants. Long tail so India will feel like they're still in it especially if Bavuma can't bat.

Play delayed restarting after lunch as 3rd umpire Richard Illingworth stuck in a lift coming back from lunch.

just when you think the sport can’t be suffer any more delays….

the non stop run ins for ‘fitness’ issues, equipment changes, side screen changes, close in fielders calling for pads, helmets, other PPE …Now an umpire stuck in a lift !

    🤪

great start with the ball from Pakistan.. Aussies looking ropey at 11/2

And straight after the delay Warner chops on.

185 for Elgar. Injury for Bavuma and didn't bat. No attempt to walk out and block a few at number 11, even though Marco Jansen is 84 not out. What exactly does that chap do? Should retire to be honest. Serves no purpose except to steal a living

Really disappointing display by India today. Match in the balance this morning and they end the day with an innings defeat.

Two match series so India's hunt for a series win in South Africa has to go on. Sri Lanka remain the only Asian team to win there.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,466 ✭✭✭MFPM

Shambolic by India, I had to go out for a few hours and SA were beginning to accelerate. I got back and Elgar is being interviewed after an innings defeat for India. Kohli hit 76 which was more than half the India total. Big win for SA.

Over in Melbourne despite Pakistan having Aus in all kinds of trouble early on today, Marsh and Smith batted well to put Aus back on top. Wouldn't completely rule Pakistan out but I suspect Australia already have enough runs with 241 lead, 4 wickets remaining.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,410 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Rohit Sharma their captain faced 22 deliveries over both innings scoring 5 runs…

SA score 408 runs which condemns India to an innings defeat.

15 of the 22 Indian batting innings saw their batsmen only score single digit scores.

Australia will be hoping for a 300+ lead tomorrow. 60 more runs with 4 wickets left will be touch and go. Be interesting..

Wish South Africa took test cricket more seriously when you see the talent they can give debuts to especially bowlers. Burger looks amazing and while Coetzee was quite this game he is only 23 and was great at the world cup.

India at home needs to be more than two match series. They're off to NZ next for another two match series and worst of all a lot are staying at home to play in their T20 competition.

Great to see South Africa returning to the top of the game it seems after a bit of a struggle in the past number of years. Their run to a World Cup semi-final was a little bit under the radar and now they seem to be unearthing some quality players, in particular Jansen and Coetzee.

Their batting is still a bit of a concern as it has been a weak middle-order for some time, but great to see David Bedingham finally get a chance at international cricket after scoring a boatload of runs for Durham over the years. Still questions over Bavuma and whether he deserves his spot in the side, but a great few days for South Africa.

As said above they haven't played a whole lot of test cricket with this being only their 3rd test match of 2023 and that New Zealand tour will be intriguing as a barometer of where both sides are.

Nice to see a bit of fight from Pakistan on Day 3. Test matches in Australia have been incredibly dull over the past number of years due to their dominance. Still expect Australia to win with a bit to spare, but hopefully Pakistan can continue to push them.

Travis Head given out by DRS, crazy… nothing on snicko until the ball passes the glove so what was heard ?

Australia vs Pakistan is entertaining but the lack of a crowd is worrying…

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,466 ✭✭✭MFPM

Facile enough victory for Australia in the end, Pakistan just can't put enough runs on the board, they had moments in this game when they had Australia under pressure but couldn't sustain it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 615 ✭✭✭dohboy

First time in years I'm not invested in winter tests. I dunno, maybe it's the line up. Australia always knock over Pakistan and the Windies series will be a shoe-ing. India were fairly p1sspoor against SA, by all accounts. Looking forward to seeing how England get on in India though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

South Africa name their squad for New Zealand and it's worse than I thought it would be. Haven't heard of most of them. The captain will be a debutant. Only first teamers I recognise are Bedingham and Keegan Petersen. Duane Olivier was a good bowler but wouldn't get a look in anymore.

Something very wrong when your domestic competition is being prioritised over international games.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,199 ✭✭✭VillaMad

Absolutely terrible for the state of the current game with South Africa now prioritising their own domestic T20 competition over their actually country. Their 'A' side took on the West Indies 'A' side over the past month in 3 four-day games and it's basically that same side.

The sport is not heading in a good direction.

Did you ever think you’d see the day, when a fella making his international cricket test debut, is captaining the team, that’s just nuts. The sport is eating itself..

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,410 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Weather set very fair for all 5 days of the Australia vs Pakistan test.

Australia have already won the series so it’s a bit of a dead rubber but hopefully both sides can serve up an entertaining 5 day’s cricket .

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,466 ✭✭✭MFPM

India have SA at 55/9 in the second test with Siraj taking 6 wickets. SA are so inconsistent..

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,466 ✭✭✭MFPM

SA all out for 55. Top score of 15...

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Pure madness in the last few minutes has South Africa back in it. Four down to all out for no runs. Ngidi and Rabada and with a run out as well.

Strange test match ok. South Africa 55. Siraj 6/15. Then India 153/4. 6 wickets for 0 to be 153 all out. 6/0 in 11 balls. Think that puts paid to the amateur cricketers old argument of I'd score 10 or edge one through the slips when they are asked how many they could get against proper bowlers. I'd say 0. Or maybe 1. Probably not more than 1. South Africa 19/0. Trail by 79

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,466 ✭✭✭MFPM

Could we see a two day reduction here? SA still 36 behind with three wickets down.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,410 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Warner in his farewell test gets a hell of a life… Ayub on debut puts down an absolute dolly in the slips.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,466 ✭✭✭MFPM

That was somd defeat for SA a bizarre test. Apparently the shortest test match on record, 107 overes!

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,410 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Yeah, all over on day two and only one and a bit sessions needed on day two.

Pakistan vs Australia is an intriguing game…. Pakistan will eye up a really positive first session tonight …. You’d have to think they would be delighted 3 wickets but unless Australia get careless… A partnership between Labuschagne and Smith and Pakistani side will be pegged back, Aussies don’t have runs but they have 8 wickets remaining.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,199 ✭✭✭VillaMad

The pitch in the South Africa-India game was a disgrace. Uneven bounce all game with one ball going over the wicket and then the next keeping low. Markram getting a century on it was one of the best test knocks I've seen in recent time even if you required a lot of luck that a ball didn't have your name on it. Pity, because I was looking forward to a good 5-day test match between the two and it's all over in no time.

Pakistan had a super chance on the first day to get a huge score on what was a belter of a pitch. Australia have struggled to get away but that seems to be their modus operandi this days as their top order wears down the bowlers and then Head and Marsh take control. Pakistan doing ok considering the inexperience of their bowling line-up. Steve Smith is due a big one after a pretty barren spell in recent times by his unbelievably high standards.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,269 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Josh Hazlewood 4-7 quickly ends any dreams Pakistan had after doing so well to keep Australia to 299 and take a lead into the third innings. Aamir Jamal brilliant again with another 6fer. They’ve found a gem there.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,410 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Yeah a shame for the neutral, was going to try pull an all nighter and watch the days play but the Aussies have this in the bag. Not much point..

Rizwan is a very handy batsman but Jamal, Ali & Hamza are all unlikely to last two sessions between them…. Best case another 60 - 70 or so runs might get added… leaving maybe around 145 for Australia to chase…. Fourth innings or not Australia will chase that off fairly handily.

313 all out first innings to possibly being bowled out for a very meagre score, maybe even sub 100… scorecard as it is from a Pakistani point of view is pathetic….

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,410 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Australians closing in on the target with more or less one hand behind their backs… bit of an anticlimactic ‘chase’…

Both Labuschagne and Warner with his last ever test innings, both picking up half centuries with very positive run rates. It’s beyond easy for them.

Pakistani bowlers looking tame, they and some of the rest of their team behaving like children, petulant, starting arguments with Aussies for what reasons are anyone’s guess. They are losing, going to lose…. They have lost, by 8 wickets and the series 3-0.

I’ve enjoyed this series as one sided as it’s been, two and a half weeks to India vs England… should be as entertaining hopefully.

So that’s bye bye to David Warner. Great in Australia, so so away. In England it was all about when Stuart Broad would get him. Always controversial, it’s a long time ago now when he hit little baby faced Joe Root in a bar. Sandpaper gate while he wasn’t innocent, he was an easy target to pin the outrage on. Hopefully the full story comes out in his book one day.
