I think at best there are some armchair generals who think they could plan Israel's fight back more effectively with little or no collateral damage, and then everyone would sit around a campfire and sing Kumbaya. Or worse yet, think that Israel is actually the aggressor here.

I wonder if there are any strategies that would further minimize civilian casualties?

Has the IDF achieved some kind of an operational stability now where they could now try other tacks ?

Is their some way they can foment division within the ranks of the combatants or civilians ? Offer special deals for information ( eg extricate their immediate family )

Are these sort of tactics ongoing without being publicized ,perhaps.

para 3 tactic has been on the go for a while now.

It's a bit of everything. Even the Taoiseach stated in the Dáil that he felt there was an element of revenge in the Israeli actions in Gaza.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,338 ✭✭✭volchitsa

Even the Taoiseach? Are you for real? This is the man who couldn't bring himself to speak the truth about what happened to a child with Irish nationality who witnessed people being murdered around her by the same men who held her captive for over 2 months, eventually freeing her in an exchange where she was a mere commodity, and leaving her so traumatised that she was unable to speak above a whisper, and is still deeply traumatised - an experience Varadkar described as her "being lost"?

Why on earth would you think someone who can't bring himself to be honest about that for fear of displeasing pro-Hamas potential Sinn Fein supporters (couldn't risk losing a vote, could we?) is going to be honest about Israel needing to defend its citizens?

And second, why would "even" the Taoiseach" even know that anyway? Do you think Netanyahu rings him up and tells him not to pay attention to Israeli press releases about their military aims and "here's what's really going on"?? You're hilarious.

Biden told political donors that the Israeli government wants to punish all Palestinians.

He's probably an armchair general though.

They have hit targets in Syria and the Lebanon too but only tickles compared to what they're doing in Gaza. Iran might not have an A bomb but they have very powerful stuff.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,434 ✭✭✭jmreire

Any Israeli responses to Iranian aggression have been measured, and so far, they have been hitting military targets, or assets used by the Iranian militaries. They recently (October) put both Damascus and Aleppo airports out of commission twice in the same month. I'd say that Iran would prefer not to tangle overmuch with Israel, if they can at all. Israel has a long and very successful history of pre-emptive assassinations, not to mention tracking down and eliminating individuals who have attacked them in any shape or form. What will happen in the future with Israel is anyone's guess, they had a kind of mutual agreement with Russia when it came to hitting targets in Syria to the extent that they did not get involved in condemning Russia for its invasion of Ukraine and basically remained neutral. But since the oct7 attack on Israel, and the Israeli belief that Russia was involved, and promising to sort out the Russians after Hamas has been dealt with, We will have to wait and see how that plays out in the skies over Syria and Iran.

If only Ireland had some sort of military capability, oh wait we don’t

We are a neutral country without a military

Moaning that other countries should send their men to die to defend Palestinians is a bit rich no?

israel will be unable to do anything to stop them.

they won't be able to not allow iran to acquire what it is entitled to acquire seeing as other states have the same thing they want to acquire so don't really have any moral or legal authority to stop them.

no amount of israel raping slaughtering and bombing will prevent iran from being the nuclear state it is going to be, so i wouldn't believe israel on what they say, especially as they have been shown to be liers such that they make trump look like a bastian of truth.

You might as well be watching Russian TV there, wipe them out etc etc

We will have to agree to differ on whether Israel will be able to stop Iran from becoming a nuclear power or not. Talking about moral or legal constraints is irrelevant where Israel is concerned, these very moral and legal constraints did not stop Hitler from nearly wiping them off the face of the earth. Or in other words, they simply do not give a damn, as they are proving each day in Gaza. Israel has one concern and one concern only, and that's survival. It's first, last and everything in-between...If they think that Iran is close to producing an atomic bomb, Israel will attack first. Because, Iran will not have any hesitation in attacking Israel, it's the driving force behind them getting the bomb in the first place. Russia having nuclear weapons and Iran having them, are two completely different things. For all Putin / Medvedev's red line atomic bomb threats, they're not stupid enough to actually use a nuclear weapon, because they know that it would be suicidal for them. On the other hand, there's no guarantee that a religiously motivated Iran would see it the same way. Personally, I think that a nuclear armed Iran, would be one of the most dangerous things to happen in the world.

hitler never tried to wipe israel off the map because they didn't exist when he was in power.

yes, he did try to genocide europen jewery and we all know that was disgraceful and unjustifiable in any context and by any metric, but the jews are not israel and israel is not the jews, it's just the only jewish state.

iran is not interested in using nuclear weapons, religiously fundamentalist as they are, but certainly the threat posed to them by israel is one of many reasons why they feel they need to acquire the bomb.

israel may very well attack first but once they do then unless they are nuking iran and that will end badly for them, they aren't ultimately going to win as iran has enough to throw at them and they will throw it at them and israel will lose even with america on board.

if america couldn't defeat inserjants in iraq and afghanistan, then they are going to have very serious issues with trying to take on iran, and that conflict would absolutely require boots on the ground.

israel will survive if it stops being a genocidal, racist, apartheid, expansionist state lead by and ruled on the basis of religious fundamentalism and lieing to the world at every opportunity.

+ go back within it's borders.

What are the borders of Israel that you think Hamas would accept, and why do you think that?

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,473 ✭✭✭✭Strazdas

Incredibly, this language is far more extreme than anything you would see on Russian TV - I don't think I've ever seen any of Solovyov or Skabayeva's guests calling for the slaughter of Ukrainian women and children.

  • Registered Users Posts: 29,049 ✭✭✭✭end of the road

    ultimately that doesn't matter.

what matters is what are it's actual borders, and they were set out in 1948.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,542 ✭✭✭suvigirl

    It doesn't matter?

If Hamas don't accept those borders what do you think will happen?

    What happened in 1948?

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,338 ✭✭✭volchitsa

Set out in 1948, accepted by Israel, except that the neighbouring Arab countries refused those borders, and attacked Israel.

The problem with the 1948 borders is that they fonction only for a country whose neighbours are relatively quiescent. Not for a country which is constantly under armed attack from its neighbours.

Israel can only accept those 1948 borders after Palestinians and the neighbouring countries agree not to attack Israel. Anything else would likely be suicide.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,815 ✭✭✭SeanW

And the 1947 borders proved to be completely unworkable, as a state conforming to them was militarily indefensible. And nobody other than the Jews accepted the '47 borders, i.e. all the other countries in region immediately attempted to wipe 1947 Israel out of existence.

And attempts to wipe Israel off the map have continued consistently since then.

So the question arises, what borders would Iran, Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis etc accept?

  • Registered Users Posts: 29,049 ✭✭✭✭end of the road

nothing will happen if israel go back within it's actual borders and not throw them opening knowing an attack is to take place.

  • Registered Users Posts: 29,049 ✭✭✭✭end of the road

doesn't matter, those borders as set out in 1948 are it's borders, that's it, end of story.

israel is not constantly under attack from it's neighbours, it's under periodic attack from what are effectively big firework and stone throwers because israel are stealing and occupying their land since after it's inception.

the 1948 borders function perfectly well for israel, however given israel is a genocidal apartheid racist expansionist state, no border is ever going to function for it because it simply wants more and more territory, and would do whatever to take that territory regardless of what it's neighbours do and don't do.

the hasbara propaganda will not work on this individual.

Hamas still seem very eager to keep the fight going.

Still waiting for people before profit and richard boyd barrett to get boots on the ground so they too can join their call to war.

    Back to basics......

Iran V Israel. My view: - Iran are working on developing their own atomic bomb. One of the main reasons they want this bomb is to destroy Israel, and they have said so many times, it's one of their declared priorities.

Israel, well aware of the threat Iran (and others) present, have planned for any attack from Iran (or others) inc use of nuclear weapons, and will respond accordingly. Part of Israeli planning to date has included preemptive strikes aimed at delaying or destroying Iranian nuclear enrichment sites, or logistics centers. They have been successful at this, as well as killing scientists engaged in nuclear weapons development.

Had Iran thought that it could take on Israel in a war and win that war, they would have done it a long time ago. But they haven't and they won't either.

    And that's my view.
