This is for anyone considering installing solar panels in the next 8 months.

Solar panel SEAI grants will be reduced starting on 1st January 2024. The highest grant for installing a PV Solar panel system from 1 January 2024 will be €2,100.00.

To avail of the 2023 grant amounting to €2,400.00 register your MPRN number on the SEAI website by 31 December 2023. If you are unsure of the system size you are opting for choose a 4.0 kwp system as this will ensure the maximum amount can be claimed. This can be amended at a later date. You have up to 8 months to install your system from the time you register for the grant.

It is asking me for my bank details. Am I completing it correctly to be eligible ? If I don't have the money to go ahead with installation, will there be any penalty ? Thanks for any advice

UPDATE: I applied and can see that it will expire in August 2024. So no loss, if I don't avail of it. Thanks OP.

Looks like you need to choose a company. I've only sent a few enquiries to places. Will it be possible to amend the company selected?

Edit again - what a shambles of a website. Tried 3 times to enter Eircode, only accepted after formatting text in notepad. Didn't want kWp of 6, had to be 6.00 (not sure if this even a valid figure tbh i'm clueless), various other issues. How does Joe Bloggs do this !!! Anyway, eventually, got confirmation. Thanks OP.

Does anyone know if you apply for the grant and do not proceed within the 8 month window (therefore the grant application lapses I presume).

Can you apply for the grant again at a later point albeit for the lesser amount?

I am interested in getting done at some point but unsure if it’ll be in the next 8 months…

Sorry to rant, but it's typical of this government to reduce the grant just when lower income earners might be enticed to purchase a system. Similar to EVs, just when the price is falling into the grasp of lower earners, pull the grant.

These schemes will have mostly benefitted those who could probably afford the full price anyway.

I was told if you’re not going ahead to let SEAI know before the 8 months are up. Just say the funds not available and you should be able to reapply.

I hadn't thought about EV chargers. Which one would people recommend? I presume like the solar panels that the make and model filled into the SEAI application can be changed.

My electric supply is with Bord Gais so I put them down as the company, I assume it can be changed later.

we got the Eddi fitted with solar panels so have applied for the Zappi 7kw tethered. That’s the information the company that installed panels gave us.

That's the one I was considering except I was going to go for untethered.

I’m sure they said tethered meant there is a cable attached and that was the reason for selecting it. Other than that I don’t know.

Tethered is where there is a fixed charging cable attached to the wall charger. Untethered is where you plug the one you get with the car, into the wall charger every time you want to charge the car. Tethered is a bit more convenient in poor weather versus after a night of rain having to put a wet untethered cable back into your car. Some people are not bothered by that though.

jaysis I didnt know about that one and its something I had planned. I believe installers are charging circa 1,500 nowadays so reducing the grant from 600 to 300 makes getting an EV even more expensive. A few years back there was a sparks recommended a lot on Boards who did the installs for a flat 600, i.e the exact value of the grant. Now it seems it would cost you 1,200 with the reduced grant of 300.
