I do think we'll see the Ahern experiment end once Kleyn and POM return.

With Edogbo now sidelined, Coombes is really the only forward with the height and heft to be the toilet-cleaner.

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,154 ✭✭✭✭Neil3030

Still not there for me, anyway.

I think tonight really showed that for all Murray's experience, he really isn't a leader.

Zebo made two nice runs back from deep which looked promising at first, only for the attack to then go side-to-side, gradually conceding territory until Connacht won a penalty turnover at half way.

Each scenario was crying out for a leader to call for a couple of phases after the break, then to go back to the box-kick and press defense which had worked earlier in the half to carve out a score. Instead they showed inexperience, got a rush of adrenaline from the break, and made the wrong decision.

Not sure that's on the coaches, imo. Senior players have to step up there.

Buckley isn’t particularly big at all? He’s 6ft and 105kg. On the scales he’s the exact same size as Clarke. If anything the fringe Munster players like Kendellan, O’Donoghue, Daly and both Wycherley’s look underpowered and small for their positions.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,985 ✭✭✭almostover

Why not end it now, play Coombes at 8 and Aherne at 4 with maybe Kendellen at 6?

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,154 ✭✭✭✭Neil3030

My guess is that you then have Ahern and Beirne in the second row, which is a bit weak in the toilet-cleaning department.

If Aherne can't 'clean the toilet' then he's no business being a starter with Munster. They all need to roll up their sleeves a bit now after that month of manure.

I'd go easy on him, given his frame. Took Toner until his mid twenties to really be an asset in that department.

Christ, there's some ridiculous over reaction on here this evening.

Worst season ever? Won't qualify for next seasons Champions Cup? Questions asked of the coaching staff? Some very short memories on here.

Munster finished 6th last season and won the playoffs. They're now 2 points off 4th place and have a run of Zebra and three Welsh teams coming up. They'll easily finish top 8. Especially when some of the 21 injured players return.

Tonight Munster had to start the 4th choice hooker and didn't have a capable replacement on the bench. They had to start their only available 10, who is first year academy. They lost two players before kickoff and had another two stretched off in the first half.

I'd advise some of ye to take a step away from the keyboard.

I think either way, Munster’s upper management need to being the process of acquiring medical jokers at hooker and second row. Buckley is the only fit senior hooker atm, and Beirne and Ahern in the second row (with Beirne on international duty soon). We’re just not going to be able to get through these mid season games intact. Its possibly too late anyway for Europe, I don’t know how we go down to Toulon with this matchday squad (minus Jager and JOD) and get a result next week.

Conn fan here but think you guys are being a bit hard on the team. The conditions well appalling and you're missing so many players. Get a few bodies back and you should get top 4 comfortably enough.

That said your line out was comical, worst I've seen in a long time. Shane Delahunt doesn't have a contract so you should give him a call, why connacht let him go I'll never know.

As always there are over reactions and "under" reactions.

Lineout should never be like that. Even with the injuries. A hooker who can't throw is just not worth it. Timings were wrong too but hard to know from outside.

We had no direction on the field. Butler is young. Murray is not. The aimless side to side attack was demoralising. With the personnel available, it was absolutely a day for kicking it and trusting defence.

Injuries are catastrophic and we are struggling hugely as a result understandably but you'd hope your 4th choice hooker could throw and that your 3rd choice loosehead is trusted for more than 4 mins? So those criticisms are valid for me. But they'll take time to fix.

On field performance should still be far better than the last month.

Also I've full faith in the current set up to get it right. They've been dealt a shocking hand but delivered a trophy ahead of time last year. They know what they are at.

Looked bad today especially set pieces but things will improve very quickly once injured players start coming back

Ahern had a fine game, watch back the contributions be made from pressuring a knock on from the restart by Mccarthy, he was excellent.

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,154 ✭✭✭✭Neil3030

I really like his footwork in contact. He's very light, can step around, pivot, find an angle so he doesn't meet the tackler head on. Takes less damage and then pretty much just needs to fall forward to guarantee at least a 2m gain.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,882 ✭✭✭50HX

They are OK plenty of credit in the bank, I'd have a question over our strength & conditioning with the past few seasons....every team has a bad run of injuries but we seem to be at the higher %....I've no stat to support that just a general observation

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,314 ✭✭✭✭phog

I'm not sure what's ore depressing, the result or the reaction here

Before kick off we were down to the bare bones, we lose Jager on 10mims and Jacko just before halftime.

Our lineout was a shambles but look who we're missing, our two first choice hookers, the named hooker was a late change. Then weret missing RGS, Kleyn, POM all would be an immediate improvement to our lineout woes.

The refs are there to protect players, two injuries tonight from clearouts with players coming in from the side, Murray gets pinged for a high tackle but a few minutes later nothing for the high tackle on Zebo, who once again had a good game in awful conditions.

I think I said this already in the thread but we have the Welsh teams& Zebre coming up after the Champions Cup, if we can get a few players back by then we could be picking points.

Hope Jager, Jacko and Hasen have a speedy recovery

Calls for an Irish call up look extremely premature in my opinion. Was really paying attention to him today and thought Bar a couple of moments he was pretty anonymous.

For test level you really need to be more involved in those conditions. Prendergast was POTM today and Baird had a huge impact last week when he came on in similar conditions.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,776 ✭✭✭thomas 123

It’s a shame to see Jager injured, I wasn’t expecting much from him but it was refreshing to see a big and fit front row carrying and constantly looking to carry into contact against Leinster.

  • Registered Users Posts: 398 ✭✭CONSI

Lots of call for Munster to sign some medical jokers...but where do we get them from...unless some clubs want to ship on some squad players for a few weeks

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,544 ✭✭✭ulsteru20s

That injury list has almost got to the point where analysis of performance is basically impossible. Like, just running an effective training with 40% of your squad injured is probably tricky.

The only thing I guess is the lineout looked crap before as well. That’s not so much of a new problem.

Otherwise, there isn’t much to say.

  • Going through the squad list on the Munster website at the moment, there is 44 senior players listed (41 we started the season with plus Clarke, Hogan & Jager) . 19 of that 44 are injury concerns. The 13 highlighted in bold below, I would consider to be on a first choice squad if all were fit

    Diarmuid Barron

    Patrick Campbell

    Joey Carbery

    Eoghan Clarke

    Andrew Conway - Retired

    Liam Coombes

    Jack Daly

    Mike Haley

    Cian Hurley

    Oli Jager

    Dave Kilcoyne

    Jean Kleyn

    Alex Nankivell

    Jack O'Donoghue

    Peter O'Mahony

    Roman Salanoa

    Niall Scannell

    RG Snyman

    Fineen Wycherley

  • I was only going with Senior Players for the list above but there's Edogbo in the academy and another couple there too iirc

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,557 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

They should borrow Soroka and Deeny for a month.
