Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The cameras there are the moment are the AGS CCTV cameras, I believe?

The enforcement cameras are different. They are more akin to speed cameras in that they are automatically watching for triggers (i.e. car going through a red light, bus lane etc.). When triggered, the image is automatically sent for processing.

You see them quite a bit in the UK. They are smaller than speed cameras, but also painted yellow so that drivers are visually aware that they are there.

I believe there is legislative reasons why they aren't used here. Time to fix this.

So you can no longer take the left onto letirim street by garage and drive on to mccurtain street?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,185 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

You can take that left and you can go up to Wellington road but you cannot, legally, go onto Coburg Street and then MacCurtain street , you have to loop around onto Devonshire Street, bringing you back to the N20 from where you came!

IMHO the answer is in signage and education. BIG SIGNAGE.

Seems to me that very few people know what all these changes entail- how to get from point A to point B etc.

There was a big hullaballoo and party celebrating McCurtain Street being opened as two way but not a single map or infographic to explain the changes. How many people on this page have asked for a map explaining the changes ? The reason they're asking is because there's none readily available. Cork City Council Website has some maps of sorts but they're completely useless. They're actually the initial proposals from a number of years ago rather than an updated map of how traffic should be flowing.

The right turn from York Hill is getting a lot of attention but that's actually as a consequence of the rest of the traffic changes now forcing more cars up that way whilst the only way to get off Wellington Road is by going up to St Lukes or heading down towards Hardwick Street and doing a loop of God knows where. There's been no right turn off York Hill since at least 2006 when I started working up that direction but it's only now that it has become an issue.

It also seems to me that the only way people are finding out that Coburg St is bus lane only on to McCurtain Street is when they actually drive on to it. BIG SIMPLE SIGNS are needed. The lighted type where you only get to read one line out of four as you drive past as are useful as an ashtray on a motorbike.

    Information first, then enforcement.

Just a rant. Was driving up towards wgh this evening on the dual carriage way. Roadworks just before the slip of wgh. Clearly marked with signs and cones indicating the right lane is closed. Just before the lane closure the car behind me suddenly overtakes me, forcing me into the hard shoulder before correcting their mistake. My BP took a while to come down. Furious 😠.

You're being pretty naive if you think the majority of drivers care about what a sign says. Most will do what is convenient for them and what they think they can get away with. There are cars parked in loading bays and on double yellow lines all day long in the city and they know damn well that they're not supposed to, but they do it anyway because they know there's no consequence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,185 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

Multiple, highly visible signs doesn't prevent people turning right, illegally onto Christie Ring Bridge!

People don't even stop at red lights!

I don't think signage is the problem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,270 ✭✭✭twowheelsonly

Signage (or the lack of) is a problem if people don't know that they're not supposed to turn right. The signage there is pitiful.

It's hard to complain about people doing something wrong if they don't know that they're doing wrong in the first place.

Don't get me wrong - it pisses me off as much as the next fella. I had one literally drive up to my drivers door t-bone style as I went around there early this week. From where I was looking he didn't have a clue that he wasn't supposed to turn there.

Loads of folk never look at signs, no matter how many or how large they are. The road markings are an absolute disgrace, difficult even for those of us living in Cork to see when it's dark, wet and raining, must be awkward for visitors and could easily lead to accidents. You would think we would use a better paint considering it's raining most days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,185 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

I disagree. There are signs all along the quay displaying no right turn. What more do you expect? Should they have flown a huge sign over the junction?

No doubt in my mind that the vast majority of people taking that turn, know full well that it's illegal to do so.

I suppose it's the fault of the traffic lights that at almost every sequence of the lights, cars run red lights?

I was walking by the Opera House on Monday evening & noticed somebody waiting to make the right turn. Unfortunately (for them!) they didn't notice the Garda jeep a few cars back who stuck on their blue lights & drove up beside them. I didn't catch the lecture but they reconsidered their right turn decision & went straight on instead.

Yesterday I went for a jog out the Straight Road after work, from Inchigaggin lane onwards I was overtaking cars all the way to the turnoff to the Anglers Rest & I'm not a fast runner!

The cars taking the right turn from york hill does my head in i wont leave them out but someone always does.

Bus priority hours today once again ignored, Patrick's Street full of private cars.

Bollards were also down on Oliver Plunkett Street this afternoon... With motorists taking full advantage.

Saw that yeah guy sitting in a car at back of Penney's not a bother on him

Also people parking all over the place on liberty Street plenty of tickets handed out.

Always when someone does something dickish like blatantly skipping queues in the wrong lane, someone always let's them in! These enablers are just as bad as the dicks!

I do wish Smyths was some place else instead of being next to the Kinsale Rd roundabout.

The further from the City Hall the less interest is shown.

Don’t know if this should be in Traffic or Antisocial Behaviour.

No idea what the buildup was but two lads getting into fisticuffs by the courthouse.

Looks like guy guy was parking in cycle lane and other guy was taking a pic of him and illegal parker took issue with this and got violent.

Just what it looks like to me, I have no insight to this.

But, whatever happened, the guy with the glasses is the scumbag, here. He started the violence and escalated it.

Edit : Cork beo are suggesting that there might have been a small collision but I don't know what they are basing that on.

I'd say people don't realize wardens are back today cars parked in taxi ranks and loading bays.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,508 ✭✭✭Oafley Jones

It’s the not just the traffic wardens though. Used see this every Christmas when we lived on the coal quay. The guards would come out of the bridewell and generate a ridiculous number of fines (no paper tickets issued on the car) Head back in and come back out two hours later. Rinse and repeat. Drivers completely unaware until they got the post.

Same story today pile of tickets issued.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,185 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

That really is good news. I really thought that the gardaí had no interest in enforcing parking enfringments, particularly footpath parking. Perhaps we are seeing a change.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,415 ✭✭✭ofcork

I meant it was the wardens who were issuing tickets today.

Last night I was standing outside my local when a car driving down the street decided to do a u turn. Without stopping or really slowing, he turned sharply, kinda freaking me out as he was heading directly for me. He braked hard and reversed aggressively, and pulled forward quickly again turning to go back the way he came.

While musing this odd occurrence I looked down the street to see a cop car ahead of him making a u turn to go after him! They must have seen is aggressive u turn in the mirror and decided it wasn't on.

I'd (genuinely) love to know why it is that so many/most Cork drivers don't use indicators myself.

I know it happens other places too, but everytime I'm down that way (regularly) it stands out to me - junctions/roundabouts/lane changes.. it makes no difference.. they'll just turn whatever way and whenever.

It really annoys me to be honest. Would love to know why though!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,185 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

With the Mccurtain Street revamp in use a while, now, I can't figure out why anyone (apart from buses) needs to travel the new direction. As I understand it, the only way onto it is from Brian Boru Street. And the only place you can get to is the Watercourse road junction by Hegarty's/Ross motorcycles. What is the point of it? Wouldn't you just continue along the quays?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,966 ✭✭✭cantalach

I had the very same thought when picking herself up outside the Metropole over Christmas. I don’t get the use case, if you’ll pardon the tech nerd speak.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,582 ✭✭✭Padraig Mor

Yes, it's pointless. And further, while I can't claim to have performed a comprehensive survey, and don't usually use MacCurtain St anymore (was daily before) due to the disaster that is the quays, any time I have driven or walked the street since the changes I have yet to see a single bus heading west (new direction)!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,185 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

It's a bus route. There are buses. I'm sorry you haven't seen them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,582 ✭✭✭Padraig Mor

No need for the sarcasm. I'm simply expressing surprise that I have yet to see a bus on what was sold as a public transport corridor. I'm sure there are buses....but how many?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,185 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

    That wasn't sarcasm.

    How many would satisfy you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,921 ✭✭✭Mefistofelino

Three routes using it Westbound - 207, 208 and 209. About 120 buses on a weekday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,966 ✭✭✭cantalach

Maybe I completely missed the other guy’s point but I was saying that westbound MacCurtain St is pointless only for private vehicles because they can’t turn left into Bridge St. I think westbound MacCurtain St should be bus+bike only.

I assume traffic from summer hill can go westbound on McCurtain street so wouldn't have to use the quays or Patrick Street.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,021 ✭✭✭whatever76

Nope buses only from summerhill to McCurtain st.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,185 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

No, only busses are allowed to turn right onto MacCurtain street.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,415 ✭✭✭ofcork

I assume so it is helping traffic from Patrick Street etc to head to Blackpool since the right turn by the opera house is gone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,185 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

Ah, yes. Didn't think of that. But you still wouldn't use mccurtain street in that scenario. And I'd rather take my chances on Camden Quay than trying to get out at Ross Motorcycles if I was going that way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,593 ✭✭✭Markcheese

That turn coming out at ross motorcycles used to be no right turn , not that anyone ever took any notice

While cycling along Coberg St this afternoon in the direction of MacCurtain St, there was a 203 bus stopped at the bus stop opposite the Corner House, I overtook the bus and there were three cars waiting ahead of the bus waiting at the traffic lights on the junction with Bridge St. An hour later on Patrick's Bridge there was a car northbound waiting to turn left, though there were clear markings on the road stating that the left turn is for buses only. Last week waiting at the lights at the junction of Cathedral Park and Watercourse Rd (by the Constellation) a car came down Upper John St, drove through traffic lights which were on red. Something is going very amiss here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,185 ✭✭✭✭the beer revolu

I thought you were allowed to turn left from Bridge street onto Cogburg street?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 430 ✭✭Dan Dare

I think you are, but not from Patrick's Bridge on to Camden Quay.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,415 ✭✭✭ofcork

You are allowed turn left from Patrick bridge onto Camden quay I'm sure.
