Not surprised with Neil McGee. He was one of Jim`s on field leaders and our defence needs tidying up as well. If there was one thing Neil liked, to put it mlldly, it was a tidy square.

Luke Barrett I find more of a surprise, but then maybe @downthemiddle was right and 5 of the 9 interested in the job were Barrett`s 😎

Rumours abound that Murphy is trying to enter a witness protection program until Jim's reign is over.

The upside is that we need a new minor manager.

Fergus is strutting around the place like a dog with two mickeys. He can't believe his luck knowing that this appointment papers over a lot of the cracks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 696 ✭✭✭ghostfacekilla

Barrett on analysis, according to a tweet from @donegaletb

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,225 ✭✭✭✭charlie14

Fergus should be mindful of the saying "Be careful what you wish for" if he thinks he`s out of the woods due to this appointement.

McGuinness does not suffer fools and has no problem publicly riping the county board a new one when required.

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,225 ✭✭✭✭charlie14

I wish they would stop changing titles. When water boy was just known as water boy everybody knew where they stood.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 696 ✭✭✭ghostfacekilla

hahaha at least he won't be running around the field like a 16th player, delivering instructions like Maxi was. Even I was getting frustrated by that! Jim is probably trying to prime him to eventually take over.

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,225 ✭✭✭✭charlie14

I suppose McGuinness must see something in him, but tbh at this stage it is difficult to see what that is.

Christ that little git was an embarrassment. 2016 in Breffni there were more Donegal supporters shouting at him to stop being an idiot than there were Monaghan supporters.

He's obviously ambitious when it comes to putting in the hours at county level, but may lack natural talent and a successful playing background, with the latter not being a pre-requisite. We are struggling in comparison to Kerry or Tyrone who've lads with all-ireland medals largely guiding the underage teams. We have one or two from the 2012 team involved at underage, and it would do no harm if a few more followed their example, or lads from the '92 squad.

I have a feeling we havn't heard the last of Maxi. He probably fancies himself as Donegal's answer to Paddy Tally at this point.

Maxi is always 100% jacked to the titz, can't fault his enthusiasm

Let's not ruin the McGuinness buzz just yet lads

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 696 ✭✭✭ghostfacekilla

I’ve never looked this much foward to the McKenna cup.

Cluiche grána inniu, críoch grána - was it meaningful in the championship?

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,225 ✭✭✭✭charlie14

Looked as if TG4 were having a shot at doing just that with a rehashing of the Kevin Cassidy saga today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 696 ✭✭✭ghostfacekilla

Seeing Jim watch club games seemingly alone made me wonder if he can replicate the level of previous success without a serious sidekick, which came in the form of the Fermanagh man in the beginning of his last stint. As much as the character of Gallagher always irked me, it is difficult to ignore from some reports of his forensic knowledge of opposition players and their weaknesses, and his success with the Oakleafers that he did bring something substantial to the 2012 success. There's no doubt that more names will be added to the backroom team between now and when collective training resumes, but I would feel more confident in knowing that there's another qualified maniac in which Jim can use as a sounding board as well as to recruit the necessary personnel and plot the takedowns of the top teams in the country.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,345 ✭✭✭Redsoxfan

Meh, they repeat Laochra Gael episodes quite a lot. I don't see how that relflects badly at this stage. We went on to win the All Ireland anyway.

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,225 ✭✭✭✭charlie14

I didn`t think it reflected badly on McGuinness.

If anything I thought it reflected badly for TG4 showing again what was basically an ambush by them just a few days after him being appointed of the most controversial decision of his first time as senior county manager.

TG4 did their soap opera on it years ago in Letterkenny years ago when we played Laois.

Kevin Cassidy was co-commentator on the Naomh Conaill v St Eunans Royal Rumble beforehand so don't see any issue with showing his story afterwards.

Laochra Gael is on after GAA Beo this Sunday as well.

Big weekend ahead in senior championship St Nauls V Milford in relegation play off

While the semi finals are between Gweedore V Mc Cumhaills

    Naomh Conaill V St Eunans

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 696 ✭✭✭ghostfacekilla

It's great that the semi finals are being streamed. With Gaoth Dobhair's rearguard missing Odhran McFF, Gillespie not being at full tilt yet and an ageing Neil McGee just back from a knock, they'll have some task in trying to limit Farah. They're missing a prolific scorer on the other end, with Cian Mulligan off on his travels too. It should be a great battle. St Eunans will be fairly sick if they lose to Naomh Conaill again. A lot of lads with an incredible amount of miles on the clock for Glenties. That should be a titanic battle, as always.

Did we dodge a bullet in Kavanagh?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,345 ✭✭✭Redsoxfan

    I think so.

Enough bites at the cherry. Plenty of awful football.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 696 ✭✭✭ghostfacekilla

Anyone mad enough to bet against the favourites?

What odds are you offering? :D

It's a final, anything can happen on the day and one thing is for sure, Gaoth Dobhair won't fear Naomh Conaill. Whether they are good enough remains to be seen. It's a great achievement for the club to have a team in both finals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 696 ✭✭✭ghostfacekilla

Absolutely. Gaoth Dobhair could nick it if they manage to find a way to get goals past that iron defense. A great blend of youth and veterans on both side. Hopefully it'll be a cracker.

Tough opener in Ulster away to Derry with the winners to face Tyrone/Monaghan/Cavan

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 696 ✭✭✭ghostfacekilla

At least we skipped the preliminary round. Any word where the squad are headed on the training camp? It feels a bit odd that Jim hasn't engaged with the media yet. A real sense of us coming in under the radar here, despite some outside hype.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,345 ✭✭✭Redsoxfan

Hell of a draw. We'll know soon enough what we're about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,345 ✭✭✭Redsoxfan

Hopefully knock out stages are seeded next year. Granted, Naomh Conaill have little competition in Donegal these days anyway but that game today was a non-event.

Would like to see Ethan O'Donnell get more of a chance next year, if he is interested.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,364 ✭✭✭henke

Tough draw. I think Jim will have them well up for it and they will be ready.

Game today was over early doors. Be interesting to see how they go in Ulster.

Unfortunately from what I hear Ethan O'Donnell won't be available next year. Very good player.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 976 ✭✭✭Glenman

Naomh Conaill are nearly as well organised as a county team in terms of preparation. The next step for them now is to push on in Ulster but there are good teams in their way. They are playing the Cavan champions first out.

McGuinness should have plenty of new talent lined up for his initial squad. Priority will be to finish well up in Div2 to ensure they are in the Sam Maguire competition.

With that tough draw in Ulster you'd nearly be better off losing in the first round and concentrate on the Sam Maguire competition but they won't be doing that. A few tough games in Ulster will help the team improve.

Was at the Glenswilly v St Eunans U21 game on Saturday. Good to see that it still possible for both teams to play a bit of football. Dunleavy for Glenswilly and Moore for St Eunans stood out (as you would expect), hopefully get to see them get a bit of game time in Division 2 in 2024. Glenswilly the better team and deserved to win but fortunate to get the 2 points in the end.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,169 ✭✭✭downthemiddle

Mary Coughlan to be the new county chair. She should be used to all the back stabbing.

Our coaching officer is running for re election. Hopefully McGonigle and Diver don't split the vote.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,345 ✭✭✭Redsoxfan

Why did Dunnion drop out? He seems to be popular enough.

Any rumours about who has travelled to Tenerife?

Mark mchugh has a post on his linked in/ answering the call from Donegal, etc. no idea if he’s been full on drafted. He was key in 2012 but it’s a long time ago!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,345 ✭✭✭Redsoxfan

I assume it will be as a coach. Or a goalie.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 696 ✭✭✭ghostfacekilla

Shots fired by Fergus McGee. Wasn't expecting that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,169 ✭✭✭downthemiddle

One word that seems to be coming out of all reports from Ballyshannon yesterday. Intensity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,345 ✭✭✭Redsoxfan

    Good

Essentially the same group of players. Something has to change.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,345 ✭✭✭Redsoxfan

Good to see Four Masters winning the Ulster Minor Tournament.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,940 ✭✭✭Ceist_Beag

Not sure about the choice of photo to accompany the starting 15 but a lot of new names for tomorrow night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,345 ✭✭✭Redsoxfan

Strong enough team and panel all the same.

Good to see Aaron Doherty back.

The Letterkenny O'Donnells too, I believe Niall is injured.

Was very impressed with Ciaran Moore the one time I have seen him play.

Anyone streaming this game? I know Clubber have some pre-season action.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,345 ✭✭✭Redsoxfan

I see it's on Ulster GAA and GAA Go.

Armagh sent their U20s. So read nothing into the result and not sure you can take much from the performance.

Patton is not suited to be an extra outfielder but seems like that might be the plan.
