Stone wall red card, and yeah a yellow card nothing more

  • Think that’s three red cards for LAR this season so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,378 ✭✭✭✭phog

4 pens in a row within a few metres of the try line and no card.

  • Paul Boudehent has been absolutely superb tonight for LAR.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,229 ✭✭✭A-Train

Very disappointing Toulouse performance, LAR well on top and well worth their win.

BP win for them, badly needed.

Is it any surprise when you see how their coach behaves himself?

Open to correction, but as far as I'm aware, LAR have consistently had one of the better disciplinary records in France the last few seasons.

Not sure about that. They've definitely had red cards every season. Skelton, Botia and Wardi have all been red carded in the last couple of years off the top of my head. They really play on the edge and with physicality which brings a risk. Danty had three yellow cards last season alone.

They could still have one of the better records though given how things can be in the T14 though!

This season is another level. Three reds so far this year and all stonewall reds. But they've also had a glut of yellows. Could well have been a red for Sclavi against the Stormers too.

The red last night was grim. Toulouse player was on the ground, head exposed and Lavault absolutely smashed him. He should get at least 4 weeks.

Danty has his hearing this week. Already missed yesterday automatically but will probably get another 1-2 weeks. Deliberately stamped on a guy who was holding him so there's mitigation but can't do that.

On the game last night, it was a weird one. Entirely second string selection for Toulouse so they knew any decent result was unlikely.

They actually did well for the opening 30mins. La Rochelle were absolutely dominating them physically but were fairly poor in attack. Penalty count was 7-2 after 20 mins including Brennan having gone to the bin but scoreline was still only 7-3 after 35mins thanks to an early penalty try.

Toulouse got narrow off a scrum on halfway (was fairly impressed at how the back up Toulouse pack coped fairly well with the LAR scrum) and LAR scored a breakaway try following an incredible kick through from Leyds after 38mins. Then Bollengier (still U20 and looks an incredible talent) scored an interception under the posts after 42mins when Toulouse looked to play out of their half with the clock in the red, bizarrely.

4th try was quick thinking from a penalty by TKB who tapped and slung it wide whilst Toulouse were asleep and Leyds got over in the corner. That was in the 49th minute and the game just died a death after that.

Toulouse with an injury time consolation. They'll take it and move on. Final penalty count was 19-7 in LAR's favour including three yellow cards for Toulouse.

LAR in a little bother at lock and centre. Lavault is gone. They gamed the system a bit with Skelton, I reckon. He copped an arm to the head (yellow for Toulouse) and was down immediately, dazed and needed attention. His second row partner was red carded at the same time. He wasn't removed for a HIA but subbed him 2 mins later tactically. Doesn't have to go into RTTP now and they've a big couple of weeks ahead. First time this season Skelton was subbed off.

Julien Favre went off early with a head knock. Danty suspended currently. That means they may have to move Botia back to centre to partner Seuteni.

Their discipline has gone to pot in the last few weeks, I think they have had three reds and four yellows in their last six games.

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,258 ✭✭✭✭Buer

Danty gets 2 weeks in addition to 1 already served. Slightly fortunate but probably in line with what we've seen before when there was mitigation.

The T14 clubs and the FFR have apparently come to an agreement on player availability for the national side which reads as somewhat mad on the surface.

Overall squad size will be reduced. 6 players will then need to be released back to clubs by Wednesday if there's a T14 match taking place that coming weekend. These players will need to be replaced by other players not originally involved in the squad to allow the national team maintain a full squad for training/preparation.

For the 6 call ups, Bordeaux, Racing, Toulouse and LAR will be exempt as they already provide a significant number of players to the national team. The called up players are to be somewhat rotated too to ensure the same guys aren't being pilfered every time.

That's pretty nuts. So the teams with players not good enough to be named in the match squad (plus a couple of stand bys I'd imagine) are released back to their clubs and the clubs nominate their shite tackle bag holders to train with the national match day squad in the run up to a test game.?

Essentially. Although it doesn't really clarify the standard of player that they'll call up. It could be a wider squad guy or it could be someone that they see as a development player.

I'd imagine the exemption for 4 of the teams will create some ill feeling amongst the likes of Lyon, Castres etc.

Pretty sure more Lyon players will be called up than Racingmen

  • It highlights that even in a place like France, where rugby seems to be in relatively rude health by comparison globally, there is still simmering tensions in the background between clubs and national sides over player availability.

This seems to be the clubs looking to take back some control, after largely playing ball ahead of the home RWC last year.

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,258 ✭✭✭✭Buer

I've no idea how Racing swung that when Toulon had Jaminet, Ollivon, Villiere and Gros all in the French RWC squad and Serin who was probably going to be included for the 6N (with Dupont unavailable) before his injury.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 27,330 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

Is it definitely a fixed list of teams as opposed to a stipulation that teams who contribute above a certain number of players don't need to supply tackle bag holders and an assumption is being made on which teams that will be?

Cause a fixed list would be insane.

How reliable are Rugbyrama? They're reporting Owen Farrell is signing for Racing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,225 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

In the last decade Racing have had Sexton, Carter, Frans Steyn, Finn Russell and now Owen Farrell as their fly halves.

    Bonkers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,154 ✭✭✭✭Neil3030

Last time Stuart Lancaster coached Owen Farrell at 10 with an unusually likable flanker captaining the side...

    ...all went swimmingly, right?

Could be the first big name of an English exodus.

Rumours of Itoje looking elsewhere aswell.

Whispers of POM to LaR next season

    You might have misread.

It's "Whispers of Pomme", a new French restaurant opening in LA.

Very disappointing that, on the weekend that’s in it with very little URC action (Sharks v Lions the sole fixture), Premier Sports have elected not to show a single live Top 14 game this weekend despite having no live sport on when Toulouse v Lyon and Montpellier v Toulon are being played. Highlights / delayed showings during the day on Monday.

Not available in ROI alas (unless you have Sky, Premier Sports entitlement, and tune in via Manual Tuning).

Of course, they’ll be the one company again in a few weeks.

Had a watch of a couple games

Racing played some very nice rugby v Castres. Nice set piece plays (no doubt benefitting from Lancaster's influence) and a really dominant scrum.

Skelton was unplayable Vs Pau, probably won La Rochelle the game himself for a finish. Back to his wrecking ball best.

Courtney Lawes to Provence Rugby to link up with George North and Thomas Francis the latest rumour.

They've been a mid table ProD2 team for a while with long term ambitions. With the stadium expanded they're aiming for the playoffs this year and have started well but they tend to have a mid season slump and falll away.

They always bring in an ageing star and sometimes it works out but they're fairly splashing the cash for next season so who knows. ProD2 is really unpredictable.

Fair play to him. Fantastic player and a born winner. Would have absolutely loved him at Leinster but would never happen.

Hope he does well at Racing.

Everywhere is reporting a 2 year deal.

Racing themselves are reporting it as a 2 year deal

    Good move for farrell.

Looks like him ruling himself out of the 6N might have preempted being dropped, or putting some people in awkard positions!

The treatment of Zac Mercer doesn't exaclty do much for players optimism of staying in england or coming back.

I wonder how far away from a french based English team being better than an english based english team is.

Arundell, Simmons X 2, Nowell, Ribbands, willis.

Thats a lot of talent thats gone, and mercer must be kicking himself because he has surely taken a pay cut.

Its going to get worse before it gets better in the UK because keeping established players is one thing but when the young players dont want to fight for their place it means they develop elsewhere and need to be brought back at a higher cost.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,508 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

It's better than the alternative of the league collapsing, I guess.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,127 ✭✭✭ironingbored

Toulon beat La Rochelle at the death last night.

LAR were 0-13 up after 10 minutes. 12-16 at HT.

22-16 to Toulon who scored a scintillating try which was called back for a knock-on in the build up. Would have been 27-16.

Leyds scores on 68 minutes to make it 22-23 and a man in the bin for Toulon.

Despite the YC Toulon sealed it with a last minute penalty from Jaminet.

    FT 25-23

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,378 ✭✭✭✭phog

Toulouse just beat Racing at home, Toulouse had two players in the bin at different stages.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 699 ✭✭✭Ben Bailey

Three tackles in 5 secs by Dupont. Willis was excellent. Martin Meliande looks like a skinny 14 yr old.

I'd say a lot of players would be nervous of signing a contract with an English team with the fear of another collapsing and leaving players in a very vulnerable position.

I'd be surprised if we don't see the premiership joining the URC with one tv deal. BT can't be happy to see so many players leaving.
