Has anyone used a Kia Sorento as a farm car?

The RAV isnot a car, it is a SUV and it was the first one, not to be confused with Crossovers.

Up until early 2015 it was a beast of a machine. While it has not the Towing capacity of a LC or crew cabs it Will actually out tow many of them. A few lad used to larger jeeps than mine have been surprised when they were in it.

There was 3-4 makes similar to it, the early Vitara, Honda CRV are the two most notable. The Vitara would not be as easy to maintain and the CRV is not as easy on juice and always a bit more expensive to buy.

Other than that is the Santa Fe but it's a bigger machine.

However since the Introduction of tge Quasqai most small jeeps have moved into the crossover market.

Will upgrade to a 2014/15 2.2D in a few years time.

I don't know about the newer models but the older shape noughties models seemed very capable. I knew a few lad's running them that wouldn't be very mechanically sympathetic and they stuck the pace for years. I'm talking proper jeep work like towing a 14 foot triaxle loaded on a regular basis, bits of field work and general hacking.

Would you get anything around the 5k mark these days that could be used as a farm 4x4 plus local trips to feed merchant etc..?

What make would be best to look out for? Donedeal is scarce looking.

Might be time to take a trip across the pond

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

The old ones are a big strong yoke and have a great plated towing capacity.

The injection system was the weak point. Both the pump and injectors. Not cheap sort either.

We have an 05 Serento here with 105k kms and the only bother it's ever given has been with injectors. Had an issue over the summer where the injectors weren't giving enough diesel under load and the jeep would conk out. €500 to sort it and its running perfectly again. They are a beast of a yoke to tow. I've often brought 6 Bullocks or cows no problem, not sure how legal I was but she pulled it no bothers.

04 trooper here with a 98 3.1l engine in it. Very reliable yoke and doesn’t get over loved. Often wondered why no company went back to making them.

I had a new Sorrento in 2007, did a lot of trailer work with it. Was very comfortable. I wouldn’t say a bad word about it. Surprised a few lads with how capable it was

Have a 03 2.5 navara here. Great machine. 5 seats. The back is seperate to the front unlike a rav or the likes so its easy to keep clean.

    They have a great rep

I think isuzu stopped as they had an engine warranty on them that nearly broke them?

A bit hazy but the neighbour had one for decades...Best thing he ever had to tow according to him and he got a "free" replacement engine in it he said

I was in one a couple of times as a passenger and thought it was agricultural but stable and well able to tow.

Was it the 2.8 version had a worse rep?

Hasn't been mentioned yet but there was another auld lad I knew had the old style jeep cherokee ....late 80s/early to mid 90s....box type ones....must've been petrol, he was happy with it in terms of towing and said it was a bit of a rocket🤣 the speed would creep up on you! Had it for decades too....told me stay well clear of any of the "newer piles of shite" when I was asking him about cherokees

I have my father's 06 3ltr Isuzu Dmax pulling a tri axle trailer.

It's not the most luxurious and could do with a 6th gear but it's some yoke to pull.

It wasn’t that it was a bad engine it was no one had good diagnostics at the time and alot of the recalls Isuzu did were unnecessary.

Bought an l200 2 years ago and am very happy with it. The old SWB LC is still running but I couldn't get it past the NCT (rust). Use it on farm for pulling a trailer, feeding etc. Still running fine, basically a fancy quad with a bit of shelter!

it depends on what you are looking for. big commercial one are not as cheap as many think. You have to do the CVRT as opposed to the NCT, its twice as expensive and a more detailed test. However came accross this and if it was straight it wouls last a long time doing what you suggest. However do you need a 4wd vehicule that big considering CVRT

I get away with it. You be surprised where it will go. saw a few on Fraiser Island over 5 years ago now. Mind you I have a lot of gaps cleaned and stoned.ya I would not try to tow a trailer of cattle out of a field in April but I would carry them in there and unload. However I drew loads of timber out of fields with it before Christmas with a 6.5X4 2 wheel trailer.

They're still being made but not being sold in Europe, its called an MUX. Have a 05 trooper here since new, 215,000 miles on the clock. Its on its third engine. Once you keep the oil checked to make sure its not rising you'll be fine. The injectors and the O rings on them were they're biggest failure. Our keep has a lot of trailer work done and appart from the engine nothing else on the jeep was touched.

AFAIK even though your trooper is not on the road the customs people can still do you for having green diesel in it.

If its not registered for road use and not used on the road they would have a job to prove its not solely a farm vehicle esp when a road going jeepbis there as well. Have never heard of em testing in a yard like that

A lady I worked with here borrowed a Mitsubishi l300 van off of her brother. He had it for running up and down farm roadways. Not taxed, tested or insured. Not on the road for 3 years and looked every bit of it. She drove it across the field to the site where she was building a house to store a tonne of cement in it for blocklayers and used to park it at the back of the gate as a lock at night. Customs dipped the van and found green. Cost her €2500. A shipping container would have been cheaper.

Though technically possible I think customs coming in dipping on farms is the stuff of urban legends, the chances of getting caught are vanishingly small. There are plenty of chancers years driving on the road on green diesel and never caught never mind on private land.

While I honeslty do find the above a little hard to believe it is somewhat more plausible on a building site in full view of the road than on a farm.

I'm trying to remember exactly but it must be 15 years since I went through a customs checkpoint (I've never been dipped) they are very very rare from what I can see.

The spring of 2019 I pulled into a local retail center to get a take away cup of coffee for two of us. Just parked up in the jeep and got a knock on the window. Customs followed me into the car park. Maybe when they saw the jeep was 05, covered in muck and myself in work clothes they thought they had a winner. Unfortunately for them I always run the jeep and white.

I was pulled in a good few years ago and they asked was my car diesel or petrol.

It was a 1.4 petrol Golf.

I be dipped at least once a year. We were pulled over about 3 months ago at a cross on a back road. It was a joint operation, the Customs, RSA and An Gardai. They dipped the jeep, checked the trailer and driving licience. The only thing the could find was no number plate

You might be unlucky but they do drive into farmers yards and dip anything they want. Makes no difference if the vehicle is not road legal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 403 ✭✭SodiumCooled

I understand that you are not allowed to use green diesel expect in allowed vehicles regardless of usage nor would I condone it. Customs visits into farm yards must be tiny though, I have never heard of it happen expect reading about it here today.
