20+ year old car as your primary vehicle. Who will insure?

Hi just wondering if anyone is running a 20+ year old car as their primary (as in not a classic), and who will insure it?

Have an 05 and an 07 in the house here, one in my partners name, and one in my own - both going great (touchwood!) well looked after. We don't see any need/want to change before next year, touchwood again!!

I have a camper, and a classic too tho, so need a daily as my primary vehicle to insure both of these. Who, if anyone, is offering insurance on 20+ year daily drivers? Currently with FBD via an post, they said they wont do it.

I went from FBD to 123.ie this year, as FBD said they didn't want to insure my car any more.

Hey- ya Ive no problem getting any now, as the cars in question are 18 and 19 years old. You're focus example is still 19. Im thinking for when they are over 20.

I don't see why it can't be insured, at the end of the day cars were made much better and sturdier back then and one it passes nct your doing everything correctly so no reason why it shouldn't be on the road. Discrimination if your with FBD and they no longer willing to insure..?

I insured an older car with fbd no bother but I think it helps if you have house and other insurance with them,they are probably about the easiest to get insurance with for young drivers at the moment

If it’s involved in an accident, it’s write off right away, economically. More cost to the insurance immediately whereas newer cars will just be repaired.

Lower crash safety compared to newer cars so any injuries will be worse resulting in higher pay outs.

Probably a dozen other reasons they have too.

Its less cost to the insurance company. To write off an old banger they only have to pay out €1,000 or so and sell the car for scrap. It costs a lot more than €1,000 to repair even minor damage on a newer car because of main dealer parts and the cost of a rental car.

I think it’s more to do with the fact that old cars are statistically in more accidents and insurance fraud cases.

I had up until recently a 2002 polo, never had any problem getting it insured with anyone. Was last with AXA

Not necessarily as user1998 pointed out lower cost to write off or scrap older car. Newer cars are like tin cans and I've known 2 to be written off but not that it looked like they should, rear axles, insurance wrote cars off they got book value and replaced them. If they weren't written off the value would have went at selling time or trade in, as soon as you mentioned accident & axle repaired/ replaced.

Its more economical to drive car for as long as its fit, Car bought new 20 yrs ago 25k over 4 yrs =16 yrs cost free, as long as its not costing you anymore than you would with newer car, ie nct, tax, insurance,tyres,service which you normally do each year.I don't see why its uninsurable.

Ah yeah, it’s not a fixed and fast rule.

Older cars were blackballed by insurers for a few years to end the unfortunate habit of 2 old seven seaters, both fully packed crashing into each in the dead of night in the middle of nowhere with no witnesses and the resultant, sometimes over a million, payouts. Always old cars, one foot in the breakers involved in them. Some coincidence.

Sledgehammer to crack a walnut.

A lot of people on tight incomes stopped driving and cars that would normally be available to young people to learn on and start off were scrapped and/or insurable for a few years.

Driving a 16 year old focus myself. Insured with AXA last few years. Find them very reasonable. Will be driving this till it goes to the breakers. Have it 14 years now. Great car.

I have a 2003 Corolla, bought from the Bangernomics thread on here 7 years ago, it's still going strong at 21 years old now and I'm insured with AXA for a touch over 500 quid.

I talked to companie sbefore, they said the age of the car was not the issue. It was other factors. Have the insurance company given you a reason?

Thanks all. Just to clarify there was no issue at all with insuring the cars this year, just the fella I was on fone with said I should start looking at options as FBD via an post won't do 20+ year cars. An post have been far and away best value for us for the last 3 years in a row, and fair play to the rep for flagging it now.

A quick look at other options shows I've nothing to be worrying about anyway.
