Whatever format the Switch 2 takes, I hope to F it all includes a redesign of the EShop; my god every time I go back there I remember how utterly dreadful it is, top to bottom.

I can see junior wanting Switch 2 for Christmas. Hopefully its under 500 euro with a big game thats enhanced for the new console.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Spun up demo for Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown and it's quite slick. Very snappy controls and even with this apparently early part of the game the Prince feels fast and agile - which is kinda what you expect from a PoP game lol. Looks good too, you can really tell the Switch was the focus here.

Wonder how long the final game might be - cos I like my Metroidvanias to have a bit of length in them and ATM that price tag is the only thing staying my hand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,965 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

he was never fast in the versions I've played before 🤣

Also at CES. This was yesterday.

That's 2 companies Nintendo will have questions for.

@pixelburp It's 20-25 hours long, plus a bit more for completionists.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Perfect; that's a nice length. Presumably no "true endings" either? 😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,965 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

50 euro seems about right for a happy ending though

Still waiting on news of Suikoden I&II HD Tombi! and NES Game Faxanadu once they're all released my watch can end

Had a go at the demo. Very nice. Lovely animations on enemies and some slick platforming. Another super game for the Switch library. Well done Ubisoft Montpellier team.

Just thinking with the Switch 2 launch coming likely this year, that this is going to be the first time a major console launches in Ireland without any videogame shops to physically pre-order or buy from. I suppose there's Smyths but it just feels really weird to think that I can't pre-order when it's announced and get one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,434 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

Smyths will have a page live straight away. They did for PS5 and Xbox anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,363 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

I'll probably preorder and decide later. Did it for Switch and PS5 and kept the preorder. Think backwards compatibility and launch lineup will make me decide.

Played some of that Prince of Persia demo and I’m impressed. The movement and combat is fantastic which is the most important thing for me with these types of games - it was what made Dead Cells so enjoyable imo. Would have liked the ability to run but the dash makes up for it.

There seems to be a nice bit of variety with the combat and the parry feels spot on - I remapped it to the L button rather than ZL and it’s much better that way. Nice level of difficulty to the game too.

Ubisoft can feck off with logging into a Connect amount but at least that seems optional, there seemed to be some promotional option I turned off also, not sure what that’s about - hopefully not a micro transaction shop.

Very tempted to get it even if it goes straight into the backlog pile.

Fan remake of NES Zelda with new graphics etc

    https://lloydempty.itch.io/the-legend-of-zelda-era-of-decline

    Download link in the comments

It's not a direct remake of any particular Zelda game though it does play very nicely.

There are some warnings from Windows Defender about the exe not having a recognised Publisher, but doesn't seem to be an issue

Actually it seems to be 2 years old.. didn't realise, surprised the lawyers haven't gotten to it :)

Maybe it should be called A Link to The Past, as the link is old and doesn't work. 😉

Sorry, maybe I should have been more exact. The link to the story works, but the download link for the game isn't working, well not for me at least.

    I've got it downloading now.

Nice article about the new features of the upcoming Tomb Raider Remastered Trilogy.

Delighted to hear that they've included modern controls (and the original tank controls can be selected in the settings).

Also: Better lighting, new models/environments, and damage bars for bosses.

No excuses not to play one of the best action games of all time:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,295 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

I can think of some. It's 5 years old now. You can buy it for less than €10 on sale on other platforms. It's probably going to be full price on Switch. It's 50+GB on PC and PS4(though it's around 36GB on XB1. Which could be explained because of lack of VR mode). Is it going to get a proper physical release?

By July, we'll probably know about the Switch 2 at the very least. And what's going to happen there? Are Switch games going to run on Switch 2? Will the games look and run better there due to better hardware, will there be a fee for doing so? Or are games going to get new Switch 2 specific versions? Will they be €70? So many questions.

Edit: Switch will be digital only, while everything else got a physical version. It doesn't have all the DLC either apparently, it doesn't have the Top Gun: Maverick DLC.

I saw somewhere someone suggesting Nintendo should partner with those developers to make a Starfox game. Could be a pretty good fit.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,003 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Solution: buy it for a tenner on those platforms. More people need to play it.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,003 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

They're very different games, Starfox is a rail shooter while this is an arcade flight Sim. However it definitely has the bombast and cinematic set pieces that Starfox has so could work.

Nintendo didn't try to revitalise Star Fox on Switch, but they did manage to create Kirby Zelda and Metroid best sellers ever on the platform.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 10,505 Mod ✭✭✭✭Andrew76

Wee correction to the above, you can run in the game - just hold down the dash button.

If they only release an LCD version surely that’s a step backwards? I’m curious what they’re going to do with the joycons to improve them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,326 ✭✭✭jj880

I hope they do labos or similar again.

I mostly just play docked with pro controller so the screen and the joycons are rarely used.

Nintendo says current hardware is "main business" heading into 2024, as Switch 2 reports swirl

    New platform.

That to me says that Switch 2 won't launch until near the end of the year. I thought it might possibly launch around May.

"In an investor call today, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said the company would lay out its plan for the coming financial year at its next earnings briefing, expected in May (thanks, Bloomberg)."

Nintendo have forecast that Switch will sell 15.5 million units for the year, so if Switch 2 launches late in the year with the rumoured 10 million units, then ya, Switch is their "main business" for the year. I find it disappointing though, as I was ready for their next gen years ago. I think we'll start to hear from Nintendo about Switch 2 in another 3 months time.

Nintendo Switch 2 Reveal Is High Likely Pre-GDC Next Month; Next Direct May Be a Partner Direct

[Nate the Hate] Nintendo 2024 Predictions: Switch 2 Reveal & Launch Timing, Back-Compat & More (ft. Digital Foundry)

    Nate and John's Predictions/Comments Summary:

    • He thinks it'll be a slower year for Nintendo Switch 1 releases as Nintendo prepares to release the next hardware. There will still be stuff to announce through Nintendo Directs or however Nintendo plans to release this info.
    • He thinks there will be a cross-gen period in 2025 as he doesn't think Luigi's Mansion 2 HD or Paper Mario TTYD Remake will be the last games on the Switch
    • No, the Switch 2 won't be at the next Direct. Nintendo would've announced it already
    • About the Partner Direct stuff: His exact comment/statement was "I'm going into this year's first Direct with the expectation of it being a Partner Direct. I think they will focus on 3rd party stuff more than 1st party". He did NOT definitively say that it IS a partner direct.
    • John from DF expects the same thing they did last time with the Switch 2 which is just a random teaser video popping up like they did with the Switch
    • Last Summer, Nate reported that there were whispers about something March 2024. As time has gone on, he's of the belief that this is the reveal of the Switch 2. He thinks it's happening in March because of Nintendo meeting with other developers or partners in GDC.
    • He thinks Nintendo will go heavy on June's Direct as they'll focus everything on Switch 2 because it'll allow them to give people (news outlets) previews and get a feel for the Switch 2. And with them possibly releasing it in Fall, it'll give Nintendo the opportunity to show off the Switch 2 tech in other future events that'll round out the year like TGS
    • Nate thinks if they launch in November, they'll possibly experience sellouts between November and March thanks to the Holiday Rush
    • John thinks there was too much smoke around the Switch Pro for it to not have been real. He thinks that they shifted gears due to getting cold feet and not wanting to botch the hardware or launch as they have to get the next Switch's launch right
    • He thinks as long as the Switch 2 is a competent system and delivers on the games and performance, it'll sell a ton and find the same success as the Switch.
    • John thinks Switch 2 will be much bigger than the Switch, which lines up with the rumors we saw about the screen size and the size implies a big chip. Nate comments on folks who might comment about the PS portal, mentions it not having much in it as it's mostly a screen. He said if Nintendo as an LCD that matches the PS Portal he'll be more than okay with it. John thinks if they chose the 8 inch screen, Nintendo did it to be able to house all the internals.
    • John also thinks battery life is a huge concern for Nintendo, he reminds folks that regardless of the demo tech they use, the battery life might not be the same for the retail units so he's curious to see what that battery runtime is. Nate agrees in regards to it being bigger.
    • Nate thinks the Switch 2 might just not have the JoyCons and that it'll be more similar to the likes of a ROG Ally. John agrees, says they weren't that big of a success and they were uncomfortable. He (John) mentions that he pretty much exclusively used a Pro Controller even when he was using the Switch portably. Nate mentions experiencing disconnects with his JoyCons as years have gone, even while housed on the Switch itself.
    • Nate asks John whether or not he thinks the lack of JoyCons would ruin the excitement of Switch 2, John says if you look into the numbers he thinks that people might've not used that tabletop feature that was shown off in the Switch reveal trailer. He, personally, thinks the wireless Joycon features wasn't used by people as much as Nintendo might've thought.
    • However, Nate does mention the success of Nintendo selling JoyCons, he thinks if they gave a controller in the Switch 2 box it'd dissuade people from buying accessories, which could be why we might still see JoyCons 2
    • Nate says Backwards Compatibility is going to be a feature on the Switch 2. His only fear is how they'll incorporate the eShop considering how terrible it is. His concern is them needing to overhaul the eShop because if they have BC, they'll need to support every game or almost every game and that's gonna be a lot to take on for the Switch 2. John thinks the same thing about the eShop (it being dire) as he feels like the eShop was only designed to be used in the first year of the Switch, lmao. Nate's hoping that Nintendo has a good approach to the eShop 2 but he's going in with the expectation that BC will be basic as in you can play your Switch 1 games on your Switch 2. He does not expect to see enhancements or performance boosts like we've seen with Xbox's backwards compatibility program. The only thing Nate foresees is "if a game had unlocked frame rate, it would go to a higher frame rate by default". John was expecting for the Switch 2's power to fix performance problems, dynamic resolution scaling, in cases of unlocked frame rates it makes games 60fps and developers being able to patch games if they want. John thinks Nintendo is gonna be incredibly cautious with how they handle all of this, but expect to see some natural improvements.
    • Nate thinks there will be a ton of developers that, rather than doing a patch, will want to re-release their games with all the bells and whistles (Nintendo included, he uses Bayonetta 3 as an example) to recuperate the cost of fixing games rather than just dropping patches

Nintendo 2024 Predictions: Switch 2 Reveal & Launch Timing, Back-Compat & More (ft. Digital Foundry)

I can see the logic in what is said here.

It'll be a big Christmas for Nintendo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,295 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

We got rumours out of GDC last year. It will be way harder to keep everything under wraps this year, all for the sake of Nintendo officially revealing Switch 2 a month or 2 later. They won't want their thunder stolen.

And Nintendo don't have a lot of big games left on Switch, most of what are coming besides Princess Peach: Showtime! are remasters of old games like Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door or Luigi's Mansion 2 HD. A partner showcase could let 3rd parties announce what's left for Switch, while Nintendo keep the new Switch 2 games for a later Direct. I can see the initial reveal possibly just talking about the hardware.

There's been the rumours of HI-FI Rush and Sea of Thieves coming to Switch. And Microsoft are making some announcement next week about their games going to other platforms. It could tie in with a Partner Direct.

Prominent leaker says that announced SEGA IP revivals coming to Switch successor

Who knows? It could be BS. But these leakers can't reveal too much specifics if it's true, because Nintendo will ruin their life if it is and they can track them down.

And the offload before new gen begins:

Free OLED Switch with selected LG OLED TVs. That is some offer though all the same.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,295 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

I seen that deal yesterday on HotUKDeals. As others pointed out it's not a great deal, as if you shop around you can get better deals on OLED TV's(minus the Switch OLED) with 5 year warranties(Argos only offer 1 year). And someone else pointed out that it's weird that they're bundling a 4K TV with a 1080p handheld.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,326 ✭✭✭jj880

You will get a lot of that on HotUkDeals. People nyamming because the deal isnt exactly what theyre looking for. Of course if you only want the TV its not a great deal. As for the 1080p / 4k comment that's just more whinging. Someone might want the LG OLED for the living room and have a FHD TV they can dock the Switch with elsewhere in the house. A fairer comparison would be show me where you can get the same TV and Switch models elsewhere (with same warranty) for less total cost.

Anyway the main point was it looks like retailers will start trying to shift Switch units before next gen arrives.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators, Regional Abroad Moderators Posts: 11,085 Mod ✭✭✭✭Fysh

How is it weird that they're bundling a 4K TV with the highest-res Nintendo console available FFS? Moaning for the sake of moaning - the only way to play Switch games in 4K is via emulation.

It's a 4K TV because there is more demand for them and the arse (and margins) has dropped out of the 1080p TV market (if you think I'm kidding, I was able to get a 32" 1080p TV a year ago from Richer Sounds with a 6 year warranty for less than £150. If that's the price a premium retailer is shifting them at, Argos can't be selling them for more which means the margins are going to be even tighter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,326 ✭✭✭jj880

Started a replay of Ori when I got an LG OLED last year. It looked so good I played on well over halfway before selling my Switch. The deep blacks made it look amazing. Completed Tears Of The Kingdom on it also. Didnt seem like a weird TV / console combination to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,533 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

The thing that makes OLED really shine is good HDR. I wonder will the new Switch support HDR. Maybe not in portable mode as it would kill the battery. But in docked mode to a HDR tv.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,295 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

No, I think you've misunderstood, the point was being made to include a PS5 Digital instead of a Switch because it can make the most of the 4K TV.
