ARPEGE has moderated a bit over the last couple of days but should be settling in now. Still shows a very fast moving and deepening strong storm forming along the Jet and a steep thermal gradient.

Very big seas around our shores over the coming days. Little doubt now I would think that this will be a named storm. Very high rainfall totals especially along Atlantic coastal counties and high terrain, especially rough in those high winds and driving rain.

Interesting to see if the ECM stays the same or moves up the winds a bit.

Fingers crossed for a red alert on Monday. I didn't get snow and would like Monday off.

Depending on where you are in the country ,west is most likely at this stage but as we all know models could shift the strong winds to midlands or even the south east etc

Taking all models into account, I would think that an Orange Alert on Sunday into very early Monday and a Yellow Alert up to Monday afternoon is the territory we are in. Alert areas are as yet undefined. If the Arpege verifies or is even close to what it currently depicts, then we are in red territory from Sunday eve.

Checked Met Eireann they dont seem to concerned about it, yellow gale warning for all coasts?!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,310 ✭✭✭Cork2021

They can only give warning 2 days in advance, I’d expect them to issue them this morning at some stage. With my untrained eye Very complex systems coming our way!

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,137 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Yeah very complex, GFS still showing two parts to it, the hi res models showing other deepening waves around it, the models ate starting to show it going through a bit quicker in general, ECM seems to be holding its max wind speeds, not overly concerning at this stage , 100 to 110 overland at times, touching 120 around the coasts, heavy rain as previous charts. Still a strong enough system but not as damaging as first shown.

Yellow wind warning on ME for from 11AM Sun - 6AM Mon. I’m guessing they’ll tailor some of the warnings for Western Counties later

Orange wind warning for Northern Ireland now

  • Registered Users Posts: 9 DavyR33

Storm Isha named by UK met for Sunday-Monday period. (NI Specific)

Will be hard to differentiate the wind fields in this won't it? Messy setup this close out. Best be cautious.

These are like accordions. Movement of air and depending on how it is being squeezed certain places will get a smack. Seems to be a persistent elongated squeeze of isobars showing up on the models for anywhere from the Scottish Western Isles to their border with England. Our North Coast could easily find itself in that mix if it wobbles that way and the Met Office is responding to that.

Seems to be a little narrow precursor to the main wind field clipping the SE showing up on the models from time to time?

Arpege has dialled back the intensity a lot - looks like a more fractured system, Icon too, UKMO a little less intense too, GFS a bit upgraded and it's and all day event for the entire West coast. Hopefully by tomorrow morning there is some consensus.

If the event lasts into late Sunday night as some models are showing, it creates problems for Monday morning - at this time of year the first people put in the dark at 7,8am are students, plus schools can't assess damage until 8am or so when students arrive. Busses run earlier in many country schools as they have longer distances and multiple runs to do.

Met office warning - Gusts will frequently reach 50-60 mph, perhaps 70 mph at times in a few locations and, along exposed coastal stretches 80 mph is possible at times.

Generally an Orange warning storm I'd say with winds 110kph to 130kph with an odd higher gust in the Atlantic so probably an Orange warning in many counties and Red over the sea will be what Met Eireann shows for Isha.

  • Don't think Sunday is going to be all that bad at this stage. No harm keeping an eye on it though.

Tuesday seems like the windier set up currently.

Icon an upgrade on this morning

GFS currently 15mb deeper at T48 compared to this morning.

Very strong winds from the latest GFS 12Z, much windier and more widespread since earlier run, almost countrywide Orange warning if that holds up , very strong on coasts.

    Orange for NI

I'm gonna stock up on candles, batteries and gas for my gas stove in the event of a power cut , this storm looks widely orange warning perhaps an odd red warning thrown in as well

  • Registered Users Posts: 427 ✭✭Robwindstorm

Dangerous looking storm now. Intensified to 950 on latest guidance. Interesting to see will it hold a main center or split and elongate. This will determine windspeeds and areas most affected. As of now its the real deal with a countrywide storm. The only downgrade from now on will be the position and shape of the system.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,091 ✭✭✭✭nacho libre

I still think the GFS might be overdoing it. Let's see what the ECM says.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,940 ✭✭✭adocholiday

GFS doesn't tend to overdo the winds though. Looking at the 12z runs GFS and ICON are looking somewhat similar now with orange to red level gusts across the country tomorrow evening but ICON is slower to clear off. ARPEGE also still looking strong for the W/SW but the strongest winds staying out to sea and the east escapes the brunt of it. GEM much less severe than the others except for one frame showing Waterford/Wexford getting a spell of red-level gusts. HARMONIE coming into range now too, only goes up to midday Sunday so far but for what it's worth it's not showing the same strength of winds that the others are showing around the same time.

There's still plenty of time for modification. We're 48 hours away from the strongest winds yet and we're still seeing flips in the models. I'd imagine we're locked in for some sort of storm but the severity and duration is still very much uncertain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,222 ✭✭✭✭Oscar Bravo

A very windy Sunday evening , Orange warning likely now with perhaps a marine red for SW coast

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,091 ✭✭✭✭nacho libre

I think it will downgrade, its very rare we get orange to red level gusts across the country. Though Some sort of storm is very likely as you say, the ECM tonight might give us a better idea of what we are in for

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,159 ✭✭✭.Donegal.

    Looks pretty severe to me

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,310 ✭✭✭Cork2021

Yeah the Met.ie shows red warning winds pushing inland

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,940 ✭✭✭adocholiday

ECM still not as severe as the GFS/ICON. This is the strongest frame of the run. High level orange to red for much of Kerry, West Cork, coastal Clare and Galway. High level yellow to orange almost everywhere else.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,693 ✭✭✭Dazler97

I'm just waiting for met eirrean to update the warnings ⚠️ they may not until tomorrow but still, Amber has been issued as yous know for northern Ireland, Wales and Northern parts of England and Southern Scotland

Not really convinced yet! Gales look persistent, severe gales at times. Maybe orange for coastal parts of the West. I just don't see it as disruptive tbh

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,137 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

WRF a very good model from this range, never one to overdo it, would be quite similar to the ECM, even as it it shows it would give very strong consistent winds over the country. Regularly gusting 80 to 100km/h and up to 100 to 110km/h overland for a share of the time for parts. Far reaching steady and long lasting strong winds for many hours in most of the island.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,091 ✭✭✭✭nacho libre

Sustained winds like that could do some damage. It reminds me of a storm back in 1990 that had prolonged strong winds albeit with stronger gusts than wrf are currently showing

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 12,137 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Really fast moving deepening storm being hurtled along by the jet getting down to 945hpa perhaps, not much between the models, ECM and ICON probably the tidiest shape, GFS showing that secondary feature in there being swung like a sling shot , UKMO showing very tight isobars, more so than the others but too far ahead of the main bunch I would think for now.

And the North of England in for a good pasting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 700 ✭✭✭bazlers

For sure, which might not get those sort of winds as frequently.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,975 ✭✭✭Storm 10

UK met office have Orange warnings from Lands End to the North of England Yellow for Scotland for Sunday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,025 ✭✭✭JanuarySnowstor

Icon looks significantly deeper than previous run! Biggest impact looks like being towards the North and Northwest

The entire country is firmly in an orange warning for a while if the ICON verified

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 700 ✭✭✭bazlers

Its getting very interseting now. Small margins.

Siobhán Ryan on the 9 oclock weather saying the warning will be upgraded to Orange and that storm Isha will effect the entire country with damaging gusts of wind and thundery squally of rain.

Back on the rollercoaster, GFS much more moderate for many on the 18z. Still gusty for sure and some areas seeing strong warnings but severity is much lower and the doesn't go on for as long.

These are the two strongest frames

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,025 ✭✭✭JanuarySnowstor

It probably justifies a nationwide orange and leave it at that...its nothing unusual in my view. What's of note this Winter is a change of tack by Met Eireann!! Much slower to name storms, UK yet again named this one. Whether that's the right approach time will tell. I actually think in the media driven era we live in that it possibly is!

As always still time for upgrades

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,995 ✭✭✭billyhead

What time is it expected to be at it's worse on Sunday?

I think Met Eireann are right actually. We are all looking at the models on here I want it does look like it maybe a severe event. I don’t think there is any basis to say that anything is nailed down just yet either. I definitely think being conservative and seeing where things lately tomorrow afternoon, our early evening Would be enough.

Besides, that, there are warnings for everything these days. Days that, in my youth, would have been a bit of a windy day and now getting yellow warnings. Growing up when the storm was named, you knew it was serious. These days you get a bunch of names throughout the season.. I think they’re right to sit on the fence and something definite evolves. There really isn’t much pointing causing a catastrophe that the letter have to roll back on, or spend next week justifying when it didn’t occur.

Tuesday will likely bring us another named storm. Quite the shift from the past week. Our weather is rarely exceptional but is never boring.

And 3 inches of rain forecast for higher ground in the southwest over the next 3 days is worrying.

The ICON very rarely verifies with wind though. Almost guaranteed to overcook things by 10-20% at least.

That said, going by model consensus generally, 100-120km/h gusts across a large swathe of the country are probable at this point so national orange would seem the most likely outcome with probably a marine red for the northwest / west.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9 DavyR33

The last two wind events to cross our path (NW Meath) brought down two trees on my road. They were not named storms. Highest warning we received was yellow, and orange for a neighbouring county.

Call it bad luck or whatever, but I would be taking some extreme caution Sunday evening into Monday morning. Differing opinions on intensity and location. But all it takes is one gust.

I'd rather Met Eireann overcooks the warnings for this one. It'll feel all that much stronger after the calm we've had too.

For me, GFS looks a little unusual for Sunday on tonight’s run. I think it could be more impactful again on the next run.
