A terrible head coach I'd agree with but his record as a defensive co-ordinator to this point is very good. If he gets a job where he has the job through training camp and fails then it's fair to criticise him.

You cannot criticise him based on what he's done as a DC to this point.

I'm not confident he'll be successful either. I'm just saying he has to be given a proper chance before it's okay to say he's a failure.

    Doing it now is baseless.

Also you left out the Colts who scored seven points on 2014 and 24 points isn't getting shredded.

And the Broncos scored 20 to beat us in 2015, that's not a defense getting shredded. Only conceding 20 points a very good performance. And the offense was responsible for giving great field position to the Broncos on one if the scoring drives.

    I could go on but I won't.

It's not baseless tho. The Defenses he was in charge of did not perform well. It took Brady and the offense playing out of their skins to win 49 and 51, and they wasted one of the all time great performances in 52, getting absolutely torched by a career back up in Foles.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,026 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Since when is giving up 24 points a dreadful defensive performance? And the Seahawks were averaging 28 per game in the postseason.

Onto the Falcons, do you remember Alford's pick six? The defense have up 21 points in that Superbowl.

52 was just insane, both defenses were ripped to shreds. You get games like that sometimes. And Foles was awesome, he looked like the player who finished Donovan McNabb's career.

Edit to add: You are bringing up Superbowls. Note that I never mentioned anything about him being the DC of Superbowl champions. I'm strictly sticking to facts about performance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,605 ✭✭✭✭AbusesToilets

Those were pretty relevant performances, the most important ones in the sport. The ones a DC gets 2 weeks to prepare for. All of those games saw the opposition QB having an excellent performance. Contrast that with the 53, and the defenses performance with a worse roster imo.

    Edited to include stats.

    Wilson in 49: 12/21, 247yds + 3 runs for 39, 2/1 td/int 110.6 rating

    Ryan in 51: 17/23, 284yds, 2/0, 144.1 rating

    Foles in 52: 28/43, 373yds, 3/1 + 1 receiving, 106 1 rating

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,026 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Points scored against you is the only number that matters. 24 against a Seahawks team averaging 28 in the playoffs is a good performance. 21 against the Falcons was an excellent performance.

QB rating doesn't matter, passing yards, rushing yards, receiving yards all don't matter. It's what you allow them put on the board.

The Eagles game was insane, the other two were good defensive performances.

You've got nothing, just admit it. Wait a year or however long it takes Patricia to get a DC job. There's every chance you'll be right then but right now you are plucking at straws.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,605 ✭✭✭✭AbusesToilets

You're off your rocker on this homie, he's abysmal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,026 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Just give it time. There's every chance you'll be proven right but you've nothing to back your opinion up yet.

I'm not saying this stuff because he's an ex-Patriot. I'd be saying the exact same thing about any coach with a similar situation.

Sean Desai was the defensive co-ordinator during training camp, he's still listed in that position. At this time he's the guy that's ultimately responsible. It wouldn't surprise me though if we learn that' Sirianni and his attitude were the reason for how things spiralled downhill on both sides of the ball.

Ravens in a blowout and Packers to keep 49ers arses twitching.

Packers looking good. Injuries a concern right now the the 49ers. McCaffrey was getting physio on the sideline, Deebo gone for a concussion test.

Shanahan being so conservative on this possession

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 16,139 Mod ✭✭✭✭adrian522

Blocked FG, not great. 49ers have looked tentative entire first half. Rain not helping. Defense going well, 3 Red Zone stops but the offense needs to step up now, especially without Deebo who is likely not coming back.

49ers will start 2nd half with the ball

Suh comes across like a guy who could be a very good coach if he fancies that career path.

McCaffrey after the tackle is just different gravy.

EDIT: just saw the replay and they barely grazed him with a fingernail.

Point above still stands though. Great after the tackle.

What a passage of play haha.

Brilliant return, brilliant fumble recovery and brilliant throw from Love for the TD.

49ers escape. Sad end to a very entertaining game.

If the Lions take care of the Bucs thrill go there with lots of belief.

Love is good but that was a bad mistake to kill it. If Rodgers was holding that ball, they win that game. Hooray!!!

Long term, the Packers look good for another few years of being contenders.

This has become one of my favorite January traditions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,026 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Because it was a bad throw that ended it.

I understand as a 49ets fan you celebrate the pick and think it's a great play but it was all on Love. It was thrown to three 49ers. That wasn't in keeping with how the rest of the game went.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,007 ✭✭✭Carcharodon

Just back home from game, we 100% deserved to lose, Packers owned us all game but just didn’t have the experience to close it out.

it’s easy to pile on Purdy or whoever but i honestly think we got out coached, it was so frustrating and most of friends are super homers so it makes it worse lol

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,850 ✭✭✭CMcsporty

Were you actually at the game? Cool if so

it was a great game. If some of the Packers could actually tackle they would have won.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 16,139 Mod ✭✭✭✭adrian522

I don't know that they got outcoached. There was a lot of inaccurate passes, even checkdowns he was throwing uncatchable balls, partially due to the weather I imagine as he has struggled in rainy conditions before.

On top of that you have some bad drops from receivers and it seemed like 49ers defenders were losing their footing all night. Also Ambry Thomas is on full on panic mode whenever the ball comes near him. Gave up 2 huge PI's on critical plays.

I'm not sure you can place much blame on Shanahan outside of the awful clock management to end the first half.

Ultimately the difference was 2 dropped INT's from the packers and their inability to score TD's in the Redzone on 3 possessions at the start of the game, coming away with only 6 points.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,384 ✭✭✭✭Itssoeasy

So it’s a disappointing end to the game for packers then ? I understand what you mean but sad is an weird way to describe the end of a game of American football.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,026 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

It'd be a disappointing end to the game no matter which way it went with that ending. If it was an interception where it was a contested ball or the player read it and stepped in front of the receiver that's a different thing.

Ball thrown to three defenders is a disappointing way for a great game to end.

Nice man. What was Levis like...on tv, at the start & end the crowd sounded loud, not the rest though! I was at the Divisional last year against the Cowboys, never heard anything like it (having been to the Vikings playoff & a bunch of regular season)...deafening for the full game. Unfortunately can't get over this year...been looking at tickets though, 1000+ for section 129 (where I always sit) for next weekend!

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,156 ✭✭✭✭Foxtrol

    Agree with this.

Shanahan playing it safe at half time was the only thing he got badly wrong and Lafleur hardly did a great job with his timeout use (seems to be a consistent issue with Kyle and his tree). It wasn't as if Kyle wasn't scheming guys open, he was and Purdy was just missing badly. Only other quibble I'd have is that Kyle seems to build too much of his game plan around individual players and if that player goes down then he struggles to shift approach. Again, it was more noticeable because Purdy wasn't connecting when he should have.

The good thing is that nearly everything that could go wrong went wrong and they still won it - something many questioned that they could do. Purdy having his worst game (likely due to the rain), early injury to the guy they'd game planned to feature, FG blocked, long return, fumble not gathered, uncharacteristic dumb DPIs and penalties, Kyle being conservative at halftime... Only place they got lucky were Purdy's dropped potential INTs, which I know are huge.

Hopefully they've gotten that poor game out of their season and this will stand to them for the last two games. Next weekend is looking like fine weather and then the SB is in Vegas so hopefully no more bad weather Brock this season.

He just seems to coach super tight sometimes in close games, very conservative which is not his style 90% of the time, can be frustrating

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,007 ✭✭✭Carcharodon

It’s was crazyyyy, just the relief at the end was immense. I hate the stadium but come playoffs, it’s always going to be insane, tickets were actually super cheap because of the weather, soft ass Californians are afraid of the rain

17-17 after 3rd quarter. You’d think that the football gods would give the lions fans an easy win but not happening.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,861 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

Gibbs with a long touchdown run. At 0-0 early the lions were on the 8 yard line, Gibbs 5 yd run, 2nd and goal from the 3, Goff throws a terrible pass that should have been intercepted and Montgomery falls down and loses a yard straight up the middle. Why not continue with what was working? 7 instead of 3 there and it's a huge difference. Sometimes I wonder is it that simple, or am I missing something. Lions 24-17, and just got the ball back, entertaining game

    Ballgame for Detroit.

It didn't matter in the end but going for the 2 point conversion on the first touchdown is a bad move

The analytics/mathematics argument only makes sense if you make the first 2 point conversion, you don't make it and it means the best you can do is tie the game and you've more chance of losing.Whereas if you kick the extra point on the first touchdown you're virtually guaranteed overtime and if you want to make a ballsy move you can go to win the game in regulation by going for 2 points.
