I'd say there are people out there that unfortunately that's what they resort to. During a dark period of my life I spent a number of months living in a car, and also a number of months living in a shed. It is mentally soul destroying but ultimately got me to sort my life out and all the better for it now. But wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I have a 70" TV in my garden cinema room, along with comfortable furniture and even a WC. Its not beyond the realm of possibility and is just as likely an explanation than people living in boiler houses or single leaf sheds.

We need to bring back proper regulated bedsits for single people.

More about bad timing. If there hadn't been such a huge swings in housing it would have worked out. It does show good intentions don't mean things will work. The RPZs are very popular still but it is having a negative effect on the number of rentals available and will continue to do so. Public pressure will keep it in place but it stops investment into more rentals and existing rental. There is very little incentive to upgrade property for the existing tenants better to evict them and sell or be willing to spend a large amount after you evict them and then rent for higher. The last option being high risk

These communal spaces seem to remind people of tenements, which is how I heard the above described more than once. Of course, we already have the modern equivalent of tenements in some parts of Dublin as it is. A rose by any other name and all that.

Bear in mind, the above was from the good old, pre-lockdown days before things really went to s**t. Watch this space, because I'd say projects like the above could come back.

The type of unit available is being driven by developers. They are also limiting supply to keep prices inflated. They really are the modern day british landlord.

You now what would happen though. The council would take half of them and you would go down for breakfast one morning and it would be some psycho junkie that the council housed eating your cornflakes and puking in your sink.

On a serious note, the like of the property advertised on daft above like the one in @pleh's example? Are a scourge upon people looking to have a home, a life and a place of certainty.

People renting out sheds, shacks and garden rooms need to be held accountable, but also. The need for such del boy style cowboys as landlords can only be eliminated by improving the supply of homes. By building more units, by ensuring that the demand is met by adequate supply of high quality units.

Better planning enforcement, quicker planning approvals and appeals, and a move towards more state funding for new builds, rather than for competing with FTBs for existing housing stock.
